    Meet the 21st Century Lightbulb

    • Written by from Cupertino

I have owned these bulbs for about 2 weeks, and I have to say that they are one of the coolest and most conventional purchases I have made in a long time! My only nit-picky thing is that I think they are marketing this product wrong. Phillips is putting a lot of emphasis on the color (which IS cool), but in reality, these are 21st century lightbulbs. Here's why:

    - LED Lightbulbs can last between 15-25 years! I won't have think about replacing one of these guys until 2027!

    - Consumes up to 80% less power than traditional lightbulbs.

    - Programmable luminosity, color, and on/off!

Really guys, they are exactly like your lightbulbs you have right now. Just not at all like the lightbulbs you have right now. :) Great buy! Love them!

    Issues with setup

    • Written by from Boca Raton

Had some trouble getting the hub to recognize some of the Hue bulbs. also, there is no way to remove a bulb from the hub in the APP so if you want to remove a bulb from view, you have to completely start over from scratch and reset the hub so that was not thought out well as all programming of scenes are lost if you want to remove a single bulb from the system.

Also, out of the 12 bulbs I purchased, only 7 of them we successfully recognized by the hub. the other 6 I tried to add manually via serial number but that failed as well so I had to return those. Only 6 of 7 the hub recognized were controlled properly by the APP and the other one while it was showing up in the APP, I was unable to control it and as I mentioned above, I'm unable to remove it now without having to start over from scratch.

As I'm a lighting designer by trade and consider myself very technical, overall the system (once its working properly) is very cool but configuring it was not very flexible and needs a lot of improvement.

    Amazing hardware, software needs work.

    • Written by from Bay Minette

I'd previously rated the starter pack 3 stars because of difficulties getting started with the iOS app. Now that I've customized recipes to my liking and gotten them syncing with the hub, it works reasonably well. The app still needs lots of work -- but the potential of the hardware is so great it's worth it.

My other concern is with the light output of the bulbs -- only equivalent to about a 50w incandescent bulb. I've found that with a two-way bulb adapter, I can use two Hue bulbs in some floor lamps, which results in a really pleasing amount of light. I now have 5 bulbs in 3 lamps for a 100 sq. foot home office.

    One limitation

    • Written by from Fort Collins

I just got and have working my Philips Hue. The only limitation is that this system will not work with lights on existing dimmer switches. Some of the rooms that I have in mind have dimmer switches, which now will require a change out from the dimmers, and if an electrician is required that adds substantially to your project. Once installed the Philips Hue allows you to dim lights until your heart's content. Sigh.

    Good product, weak app.

    • Written by from Brooklyn

The physical functionality of this product is superb. But the app presents it like a novelty toy which it simply doesn't have to be. The full color range is a quirky plus, but these features should be an aside to what this product is at it's best- an energy efficient way to give users total control over the lighting in their home. Make the app better for white balance within a normal range and further explore the energy efficiency possibilities it creates.

    Soooooo cooool

    • Written by from Brooklyn

I just love it, I had problems with the extra bulbs and had to reset them with the living colors remote but now is smooth sailing. I use everything, the colors, timers, scenes, make my own you name it. Like the ipad, I didn't know I couldn't live without it until I had it.

    Watch out for this flaw

    • Written by from Mill Valley

the bulbs that come with the starter kit will only sync the the brain they came with. don't plan on running them with another brain. you have to buy individual bulbs to add any pieces to a set. most of the software is a little funky .. but there a few that are cool and have a future as great apps. I'm working on a couple of very cool mods to trip on.

te system does rock. don't listen bad reviews. work around the current flaws and get ready for the future of controlled environments.

Fun and bright! ...despite its bugs.

    • Written by from ATLANTA

The Hue and its network of bulbs is fun! The bulbs are also a LOT brighter than I thought they'd be. Who knew I'd spend more than 50 seconds a day thinking about how to turn my lights on? While it was easy to setup and to connect the various iOS devices to it, there are currently a couple of bugs with the software that will hopefully be fixed soon.

    1. The timer feature does not work for me. I bought this so certain lights in the house would turn on at scheduled times - but so far none of the commands/timers I've set have worked regardless of whether I'm in the room, or away from the house.

    2. There's currently no way to group light bulbs into separate rooms. You can control bulbs individually, but not group them; yet. I live in a house with other roommates and if more than one person wants control of this, it'd be nice if them changing their rooms wouldn't automatically change the mood of the entire house.

    3. There's no way to distinguish between ignore bulb, or turn bulb off. I currently have a number of sample settings that turn on all three bulbs. However, my one setting of changing my desk lamp to the reading color and turning the ceiling bulbs off doesn't work. I first have to turn all bulbs off, then turn on the desk setting. This may be a programming issue so my issue #2 above wouldn't get complaints of people turning lights off in other rooms all the time, but there should be an off command on top of an ignore command for more refined controls.

Overall I would recommend it. Smart bulbs is definitely the future. No longer would I have to choose between sunlight white or a comfortable reading temperature for the bulbs - one can do them all, at a fraction of the electricity cost!

I really want to like this product, but mixed feelings

    • Written by from Dublin

Good: It gives you minute control over the color of the bulbs, which currently is priceless especially if you want to reproduce an incandescent-like glow. PLUS, for when u get fancy, you can produce a rainbow of other colors. It is REALLY COOL to adjust the color of your room to whatever you're feeling!

Bad: Unfortunately, they are not made to sit on a dimmer switch, which is really sad because all I wanted to do was to set a couple color schemes, and use my dimmer switch to do everything else. Unfortunately, that is not possible. There is also a slight buzzing sound.

The ONLY way to dim the lights is through the app! Really inconvenient for anyone not holding your iPhone (namely everyone else!)

If they were to fix the dimming and the buzzing, I'd be sold. I wouldn't even fret about dropping $60 a bulb.

    GREAT BULBS-Software needs work though!

    • Written by from Portland

The bulbs are great. They're responsive to the imput. The HUE software program is cumbersome at times and difficult to understand right off the bat- but after time you'll figure it out. Also Phillips doesn't have extensive tech support for these bulbs or a step-by-step explanation. I'd still buy them anyways though!

    Color my day

    • Written by from Vancouver

Very slick, like that I can change the mode of my rooms with the variety of colors.

App is very clumsy to work with at first. Also the Fade in / out does not work and have seen lots or reports about that. Hopefully they will get that fixed as I would love to take advantage of that feature.

Overall, neat way to control your lighting without the use of switches.

The app and the website are useless. The ability to control these lights is very difficult. Half the time the website or the app doesn't work.

    Great product!

    • Written by from Troutdale

I only gave it 3 stars as it's the average of 5 stars for the lights and set up. But, only one star for the app. I can only hope that Philips will improve the app over time. And, as new as it is....I'm sure they will. They will just need more feedback from real life users. In time, I'm sure I'll be able to give it 5 stars. Improve the UI. Organize the app by page....each page will be a different room/light. The opening page will be an "all lights" control. Then, organize each successive page by the user as to rooms or collections of lights. I've had this kit all of 2 hours....so, this review is based on my limited experiences as of today only.

    Great Technology

This a fine lighting product for those wishing to modernize their home. The lamps themselves are very high quality and emit very pleasing light. As other reviewers have mentioned, the partner app could use some work. Nonetheless, a great product.

    Awesome Product- perhaps revolutionary

    • Written by from SAN ANTONIO

I've owned these for nearly 2 weeks now and have decided that I absolutely love them. The ability to select the color of the light is admittedly "gimmicky" but fun nonetheless. In certain situations its great to have that feature. The main attraction though, is it's integration with iOS and the ability to adjust your lighting with your iPad or iPhone! I say with complete seriousness that this could be the first of a new generation of lightbulbs. After owning one, it only makes sense to control your lighting this way. Highly recommend for anyone who's got the extra money to get one.

Can no longer connect after app update

    • Written by from Los Angeles

Two updates ago I lost all of my scenes. With the newest update my scenes all came back but I can no longer connect to my bridge or even turn my lights on! For such expensive bulbs you'd think they'd have better support!

    Take control of your mood

    • Written by from Sunnyvale

So this was an experiment, but I'm glad I did it. The three lights in the starter pack were swapped out with compact flourescents in ceiling cans. Now my lights add status information to my day. Time to catch the train? Lights blink red/green a couple of times. Time to start wrapping up for the evening, move from blue white to warm white to orange twilight. While the App can (and does) leave a bit to be desired, the python API to talk to these things rocks.

Next up is an app that silences all my phones and lets my lights tell me if there is somone trying to reach me by phone.

    Magic Aquarium

    • Written by from Fair Oaks Ranch

    Gee whiz, but incredible.

The quality of the application and hardware is very high. The only "issue" we ever had was a loss of connection. The app told her to press the button -- she did -- and it was back in business. No brainer.

We use two bulbs over an aquarium and I have to say it is nothing short of magical. No heat, low energy and natural lighting for the fishies. When we're watching we can enhance the colors of the coral and plants, as well as two rather boring white Angel fish that are now chameleons.

If your rooms have white ceilings and light walls, you can create any atmosphere you want with no guessing. If your walls are painted colors, it takes more trial and error to get color/mood/experience you want.
