    Great Sound, Beautiful Design

The Harman/Kardon Aura, is one of the best wireless speakers available today. Priced at a reasonable $400, it is neither horrendously overpriced nor what would be considered cheap. Its size is about the same as the box for a small~medium coffee-making machine. However, don't let its small footprint fool you. Its size belies the sound it produces, easily filling my 20x12 foot bedroom with beautiful crisp omnidirectional sound. With treble that does not roll off too much at highest frequencies, smooth natural mids, and punchy but not boomy bass, the Aura is a solid performer at any price point. At high levels there is no distortion, although I hesitate to really dial up the volume past ~60-70% since the sound becomes unnecessarily loud and unhealthy for your ears. It has a easily tunable bass boost with the HK Remote app from the App Store as well as small-step volume control. Connectivity features include Bluetooth apt-x and Airplay as well as DLNA and a 3.5mm auxiliary input to connect your Macbook's headphone out. Listening at low volumes is equally fun as at high levels, as the sound is crystal clear and not muffled even at 20% or less. Once set up, the Airplay connection is quite good and I have yet to experience any audio lag or dropouts. The Bluetooth input is equally good. Lastly, I would like to mention the design. It is reminiscent of the HK iSub from the iconic HK Soundsticks, though obviously the build quality is a step up. It has a premium cloth-covered grill, glass cover and sound tube and LED lighting to indicate operational/volume status. I would wholeheartedly recommend the Aura to anyone in the market for an Airplay speaker that is both well designed and capable of reproducing great sound.

    Ultimate Speaker for all occasions!

This HK Aura will serious make you rethink about all of your speakers that you ever have in your possession! the 360 omnidirectional speakers truly live up to what it says. Don't worry the bass isn't a loser at all...you can download the Harman Kardon App to adjust the bass as you wish and everything will be up to you to play. With the only speakers that I know now that carries both Bluetooth and AirPlay in the same device, I personally think this is the speaker to go for...no matter where you place it, the sound is perfect wherever it is placed...love it so much that I'm planning on buying extra ones around the house so that I can link it all up together!

    Great sounding system

The HK Aura is a great sounding speaker system. The mid and treble ranges are well-defined and the bass range is crisp and clear, even, surprisingly, at low volumes. Musical styles from classical to singer/songwriter to Nine Inch Nails all sound great, especially for such a small system.

Streaming music from iTunes to the Aura plus an Airport Express is seamless, with no noticeable delay between the receiver (hooked up to the Airport) in one room and the Aura in another.

Excellent sound quality, but TERRIBLE TERRIBLE connection and app.

    1. Sound quality is among the best at 400 price level.
    2. 360 angle distribution of sound. (This is really nice)
    3. Beautiful design.

    1. Wifi (Airplay) function is practically broken. Very picky on your router... I tried three most updated routers, only one can pair with this speaker.
    2. Bluetooth connection is slightly better than the wifi, but still not close to competing products. You have to manually connect to your bluetooth device every time...
    3. The App for remote control is horrible.... you have to wait for 10s for the connection before you can adjust your volume.... which is nuts....
    4. BTW, You can only adjust the bass in the stupid app.
    5. I don't know if it is due to connection issues, the sound sometimes go to very low....

Conclusion: For speaker functionality, it is very good and the speaker is absolutely beautiful. It is also very well built. However, HK company should really fire their wireless connection department, they did a horrible job for the wifi, bluetooth and app. I really wanna to keep it, but sadly, I'm cannot stand the poor connections.

I would give the speaker 5 stars for the speaker part and 0 star for the wireless part. Since one major selling point is the wireless connectivity, I decided in total give it a 2 stars.

Nice, but will be going back.

I really like this speaker a lot. Sounds really good and has great features. It also looks great on my shelf. My main problem is that when you are using one audio source. All the other sources stay active. What I mean by that, I am using the speaker linked to my PC with an AUX cable, but the bluetooth stays on in pairing mode, you can not disable it. This is a problem for me as I live in an apartment and I do not like the idea of anybody that can detect this speaker be able to connect to it. Not for any security reasons, But one can simply connect to it and start blasting their music at max level during night time and the only control you will have over it is to simply unplug it or turn it off! Also, if you are not using it in WIFI mode, the wifi light stays blinking fast until it connects to a wifi network! It gets very annoying very quick that the light is always blinking and you can not turn it off. I know I could probably put a black tape on top but thats not a solution when you just spent $400 on this speaker.

Maybe if you live in a big house and the bluetooth signal does not reach beyond the walls of your house then it will be ok as no random person will be able to connect to it. But in my case, this is a no-no.

I will keep an eye on it and probably purchase it again if HK decide to release an firmware update to give you the option to turn off bluetooth AND WIFI if you are not using them. AND/OR have some kind of way to not have the speaker always in pairing mode if you are not using bluetooth. I already have sent them my feedback about this and hopefully they will fix it. Other than that, it is going back for now.

    Terrible experience! Avoid!

This speaker has a whole host of connectivity issues for AirPlay. The wifi is very spotty. I have to have it right next to my Airport Base Station and the device streaming to it must be within 15 feet too. I have a single room apartment and just moving around the apartment with my iPhone the speaker will lose connection. I've also had several times when the device will stop showing up in the speaker list and will need a full factory reset to get it going again. I've also had the speaker turn itself on and volume up / down at random, assuming its getting some kind of interference from a neighbor's phone / tv / something, or it has some kind of quality control issue and buttons are shorting out... either way.. very unstable and frustrating experience, and HK offers little to no customer support. None of my emails have ever been replied to from their product support team.

Bought them, tested them ... And returned them

Nice design but serious latency problems even with a super fast and reliable wi-fi network. Cannot compare to "wired" speakers. Sorry Harman: an overall very disappointing experience for me.

seems nice but the ad hoc mode does not work

i cannot use airplay since i cannot get it to login to my home network wpa2-psk, the reason being that the device will not go into ad hoc mode as the manual says, therefore it cannot get an ip address to login and manage the psk settings. blu tooth sound is terribly choppy from my iphone even when they are in the same room with no obstructions. when i make my wireless network security free, airplay worked fine. that if course is a terrible solution. i tried to call or email support for several days with no response, they never answer their phone. so far i am very disappointed. the product looks and sounds good, but the company support and manual for the product are very questionable. very expense product for such terrible customer service.

So much goodness packed into a small space

I bought this about a month ago. The set up was easy with all of my devices (iMac, MacBook Air, and iPhone and Apple TV). From the packaging to the aesthetics to the sound - every attention to detail is evident.

It's true, the sound quality is that good that you will hear new sounds in songs that you have listened to a thousand times before. I also purchased a digital optic cable to connect my tv and the Aura is instantly turned into a home theatre surround sound system.

The design of the Aura is drool-worthy. The subtle swipe volume touch pad on the front, the soft glow of the blue light in the centre, the illuminated icons on the side all stand up and put the Aura over the top in most categories.

Having it easily connect to all of my devices with just one digital optical cable and the power source cable is…well its very good. If you have ever been underneath your desk or behind your media centre trying to plug a bunch of cables, you know what I am talking about.

The only negative thing about it is that I have spent the last month looking for a permanent stand for it to sit on that is worthy of its beauty and calibre of design. So far no luck, but I will keep looking, terrible situation to be put into I know :)

    Incredible sound, spotty AirPlay

Before buying this speaker, I wasn't convinced that one speaker could replace multiple. However, I was utterly convinced once I played the very first notes of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature". The Harman Kardon Aura fills the entire room with sound with little indication that it's coming from just one speaker.
The bass is very deep and smooth without any distortion. It creates a very rich sound unlike any speaker I've owned before. I listen to it at just 1/3 the volume and it gives quite the punch. I have no doubt that you could fill a very large space with sound with the Aura at near full power.
The Aura is an absolutely gorgeous modern design show piece. Everybody who sees it is taken aback by its unconventional, almost alien design.
That said, I purchased the Aura to join my AirPlay ecosystem and I'm often frustrated that it has fallen asleep and no device will wake it up as is expected. I often have to restart it which takes some time because the touch sensitive buttons aren't very responsive. I will say that once AirPlay connection is achieved, it sticks with it with no interruptions, but not knowing if it'll connect is a real downer. I don't want to have to think about it. Select it on AirPlay on any device and it should just connect and start playing. That's unfortunately not the case.
So despite paying a hefty premium for AirPlay in the Aura, I'm convinced that I'm better off just plugging it into an AppleTV via optical link. At least the AppleTV is reliable in waking up when any device selects it for AirPlay. I'm still hopeful that Harman Kardon will rectify the issue with a firmware update.

Like a lot of reviews the sound is great when it works. The main issue is the connection be it bluetooth or airplay the thing simply will not connect. After a year of use the thing appears to be dead with no support from the manufacturer. The companion app has not been updated and no indication of any firmware updates for the speaker. Overall pretty disappointed with the speaker and would recommend you steer clear.

    Overpriced, a headache to control

The sound is good but you get tired of a mono speaker. there is no option for satellite LR speakers (as in adding a second speaker to get stereo). Can't be done unless you have some sort of audio splitter and a comb filter - but that still isn't stereo_/

The HK remote app is a pain to use. You frequently have to reset the thing and it is fiddly, plus the interface of the app is totally inadequate and the help function doesn't actually help you do anything.
Switching inputs is a pain. You have to remember what to hold down and for how long.

I've had this speaker for 10 months and I am the only one in the family who has been able to use it. This is because everyone else gave up on trying to figure it out. I hate this thing.

I strongly advise getting a proper stereo speaker system. I am confused as why this approach is a good idea. It makes no sense to use this to watch movies and certainly not in a good sized room. The day-to-day operation is a major fail. For $399 you could get a better system.

I'll put this on eBay and get something that is worth using.

Fantastic unit some bad reviews should be disregarded.

I purchased this unit after some debate. My main reason for purchase was sound quality and pricing, portability was not needed for my application. I listen to a wide variety of music from classical to jazz, rock, EDM and anything in between. This executes well on all styles. I am using the Aura as a bedroom speaker. This should be treated as leisurely listening device not a replacement for quality high end separate speakers with a high end receiver. Though it has a high volume threshold with clarity. Most will be surprised by what it can do.
I've listened to Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin Air which may have a slight edge in the mid tones of music but for $200 more I found it to not be worth it. In comparison to friends that have the Bose Soundlink II and III this Aura is superior yet it lacks portability. As far as reviews about connectivity I found this to be extremely simple. I'm using the Ad-hoc mode which allows me to play it as a wifi speaker through iTunes. I'm using a mid 2011 iMac and an Airport Extreme router. There is a millisecond delay when controlling volume and a second delay when manually changing tracks. Note that you don't lose a second of the song iTunes waits with the delay in communication. With Bluetooth via an iPhone it's just as reliable.
As far as the light in the unit. Unless you're hyper sensitive to light when trying to sleep with music playing that won't be an issue. I would chalk up some reviews to user error. I have not dealt with customer support from Harman so I have no opinion on that. I haven't used it with Apple TV or with a PC. The only issue I had was there was no manual in the box. Easily found on Harman Kardon's website. If you want a stationary speaker in this price range this is a great unit with fantastic sound quality for the price. Plenty of connection possibilities and loads of headroom for cranking it up.

Great once you get it working

Alright, there is no doubt this speaker's audio output is great. HOWEVER, I got stuck with the wifi setup for more than an hour!!

If you're having trouble, check if your router is in wireless N mode only. The HK Aura does not support wireless N, so I had change my router to support the older G connection. It took me a while to figure out this was the cause.. I hope this solves everyone's wifi issues!

    Fantastic Product!

After starting my search for a new speaker, I was immediately drawn to the Aura. Skeptical after reading all the reviews, regarding the flashing wi-light, and connection issues, I decided to take the plunge. Let me tell you, I COULDN'T BE HAPPIER! This is a fantastic speaker, providing 360-degree sound at a level that surpassed my expectations. The app is great, and very simple to use; like Apple products, the Aura doesn't come with a manual, but is very intuitive to set up. I was able to sync the speaker to my wi-fi network in moments, and the quality is excellent. The flashing light that people reviewed as being annoying is unnoticeable to me, as it sits on the back of the speaker, near the cable ports (and I don't keep the speaker on a pedestal in the middle of the living room). The app is a little finicky, and may have to be 'closed' and re-opened, but it takes a mere second or two for the speaker to show up again; also, the ability to adjust the volume and bass levels from the app is nice.

Don't be deterred by any of the negative comments; I was more than surprised to find out the quality, appearance and sound output of this speaker greatly exceeded my expectations, and totally negated my fears of owning this incredible piece of technology.

    Speaker turning on by itself

I absolutely love this speaker! I've had it about 2 months now and just a week ago I went to plug it in and turn it on. When all of a sudden it turned on all by itself.
I unplugged it and waited a few mins, only to plug it back in and it just turns on by itself. Tried connecting to computer and nothing happens. Only works in AUX mode

    Help anyone ?!?
