Even easier to install than expected

    • Written by from Minneapolis

This new lock is even better than I had expected it to be. The install was very easy for me, a non-technical single mom wrangling 2 little boys that wanted to "help" me get this set up. Unbelievable. It worked on the first try.

After having this installed for a few days, I'm getting incredibly spoiled based on the ease of use. I can unlock my door by touching the lock (while balancing on a far-too-narrow step with a purse, laptop bag, kids backpack, and several bags of groceries) without fumbling for my keys. It gets the little ones and I inside, out of the cold, in a snap. It's rare that products work better in real life than they do in commercials. And THAT is why I'm even taking the time to write a review. This thing is so sweet!

    Amazing and Simple

Love this thing. Easy to install and easier to use. (I even had to get a replacement part for a thick door and the team was super easy to work with.) The sharing aspect is amazing as well, now all my friends can take care of my dog!

Keys were a bad idea in the first place

This is a great product, similar to the way a high-end car unlocks. The indoor/outdoor capability is amazing. Love the outside LED's that indicate if the lock has been locked or unlocked.

Do not buy, support is Automated replies

    • Written by from Wellington

The software on the iPhones is flakey, after installing the lock, the fob worked immediately. Contacted support, the automated reply gave the answer - hint, this problem is common.

Reloaded iPhone software as requested. Immediately started to operate as planned, however the iPhone insisted the lock software needed updating. Allowed the update which was listed as successful but the lock has not operated electronically since, fob or iPhone

So far lodged two support requests, yet to have a reply

So, I knew that I wanted to get a smart lock. I am really glad that I ended up getting this one... It took me MAYBE 10 minutes to install. The instructions were extremely straightforward.

First off, the SmartKey function is super easy. It takes literally 15 seconds to change the lock from the keys that are included to the current set of Kwikset keys you are already using. That was awesome- saved me a trip from the locksmith or having to carry around two set of keys.

Then, I just had to set up the lock from my phone. 20 seconds later, I'm done. Super easy to follow guide on your phone's screen, super easy "calibration" settings... The calibration is so that the lock knows whether you are outside or inside. A random person can't just touch the lock and have it open when your phone is sitting close to the door- that is a feature that really sets my mind at ease... and it was a big selling point on this lock.

Essentially, that is the entire install. The included fob is already set up, great for someone who doesn't have an iPhone or iPod touch.

After all of this, I sat down on the couch and invited my friends and family to my lock. They already had keys to our home, but half of the time would forget them... or lose them. Now I know who comes over and WHEN! We are going out of town next week. A friend is bringing in our mail/packages... I'll know if and when he does... PEACE OF MIND!

Another pro of the Kevo- We have been thinking of renting out one of guest rooms on AirBNB... invite someone to the lock for the weekend, remove access when they leave... EASY AS PIE. Now you don't have to worry about them keeping or losing the key...

One thing I wanted to change was that it beeped when the door locked/unlocked. After 30 seconds of inspecting the lock, there is a switch that disables it. I can't wait for Google/Android to finally support Bluetooth 4.0 Some of my friends do not have iPhones. When Google finally supports Bluetooth 4.0, this lock will be perfect.... until then, I will just buy an extra fob or two.

Great lock. Buy it, you won't regret it...

This lock looks just like the original lock it replaced

    • Written by from Alameda

I put this lock on our cabin, so we can rent it via services like AirBnB and not have to hand off the key, simply email an eKey to them, and disable it when they leave.

The best part of this lock is that when it is not active it looks exactly like the original lock it replaced, the lights are only visible when running. Install was easy with just 4 screws. Sadly I killed the first lock I bought by pinching the antenna cable, leave the adhesive on the antenna wire! Once in the door install the batteries while holding the program button and it will test for door direction and it is now ready for use. I woke the included key fob with a pencil tip and walked out the door. Touching it caused it to lock upon detecting the fob on my body.

I then used the key tool to swap the included key for the original house key so ALL my locks use the same key. Just turn the included key, insert the key tool, remove the key, insert your house key, remove the tool and turn your key both directions. Your house key now controls the lock, the included keys no longer do.

Lastly I downloaded the app to my iPhone 5 and followed the directions onscreen to have the lock registered in my name. Touch the program button and it became aware of my phone as a key, Touch the Calibrate button and perform the procedure (go outside with phone in pocket and tap the lock several times) and it calibrates the antenna to your phone and pocket, do this with the fob too. This makes it so when someone knocks on the locked door your approach doesn't allow those outside to unlock your door simply because your key is near on the inside of the door. The lock ONLY opens when you are outside with your eKey.

I have emailed several family members as test who simply downloaded the app, registered, and accepted my eKey invitation. When they arrived at the house their key allowed them to open and lock the door w/o me being there or hiding a key above the door frame. When they leave I can disable their eKey without removing their eKey so they can only use it again when I say they can, or I can retrieve the eKey and email it to someone else. I get a notification when anyone uses the lock right on my phone.

Since the eKeys and their tracking are controlled by the company they don't give you unlimited keys, currently they give you 5 extras when you buy (Summer 2014) but may change that number and require you to buy them. 6 total seems like enough for now.

The only feature I cannot find is let people in on certain days and times, like a dog walker or plumber. Guess that will come in a future release. I somehow also assumed that it would include the ability to unlock from the iphone, but I guess they don't want to be a target for hackers. Since NO ONE can unlock remotely, hackers will have to stand in-front of my door to try and get in, where hopefully I would notice them.

    Pleasantly Surprised

    • Written by from Pittsford

I purchased this on a whim as I am fully automating my home with various other products (Philips Hue system, Nest thermostat, etc.). I replaced a standard Schlage deadbolt, making the install simple. Once calibrated, the lock worked perfectly with my iPhone 5S - just a tap on the deadbolt. Sending an eKey to a friend, neighbor or anyone who needs access is simple and secure with instant notifications, and revoking is even simpler. Only one aspect would make this perfect, full control and monitoring away from home. Instead of sending an eKey, simply unlock/lock remotely. Especially helpful in emergencies or if you run out of eKey's.

A word of caution - Only Kwikset keys can be used. As our home is primarily Schlage, it cannot be keyed to match.

    Love and hate relationship

    • Written by from Oceanside

I have had my lock replaced 3 times. The first time it was because the wiring harness got in the way while screwing the lock onto the door set. Kwikset is awesome to work with and very VERY quick to respond to your needs. The downfalls are, they do not tell you that you only get 2 e-keys and that in the first roll out they will give you an additional 5, after that you have to pay for each one. For some reason the app always decides to shut down, and as you need it to work, it will not open the door until you log back in, usually while standing in the rain with your hands full. Love the lock, hate the little glitches. I say buy it, but do your research.

Not Very Reliable. A Don't Buy

    • Written by from Nanticoke

I've had this lock on my door for several months now. Syncing the iPhone with the lock was a pain. It took several tries before it worked. Most of time I have to have the iPhone in my hand, not in my pocket, for the lock to work. So, why not just use a key. I was planning to install this lock on another door, but that is out of the question.

    Terrible Lock

    • Written by from Calgary

We purchased two locks, one for our front door and the other for our back door. These locks had constant problems, one of them being that it would randomly lock without us touching the deadbolt when we would close the door. Needless to say my pregnant wife and I ended up locked outside on more then one occasion without our iPhone on us to open the lock back up again. We had other issues with repeatability of it unlocking when we did have our iPhone with us. I must have calibrated each lock 50-60 times with mixed results. Since we had two separate locks with similar inconsistencies on both I am of the opinion that Kevo's deadbolt technology is simply terrible....

    Best Lock for my door.

    • Written by from Coral Gables

The lock is much better than I expected. I looked at the videos to install it and I did it in 10 minutes. Send the keys to all of my sons, maid, assistant and will send to my family coming to visit. In Miami you need many keys for the guess and instead of asking for the keys back, only one click will do it. My sons love it!!! They want to install it in their homes. I know what to give for birthdays now.
I have a vacation home, for sure I will have one of this locks in that house also. The fact that lets me know every time someone opens the door is fantastic for that house. When they leave I do not have to worry about the keys or duplicates.
The help I got when I needed more keys was superb.
I see this product is going to be in a lot of homes, like apple's phones.

    Two bucks per key

    • Written by from Arlington

This thing seems solid, especially in comparison to the August we returned. Time will tell if it holds up.
One big surprise... each e-key costs two dollars, the most useful feature of this lock will cost you each time. How many neighbors, cleaning people, or family do you have? It'll cost you 2 bucks for each of them to use this thing. Not cool.

Used this lock for a while now. it does not work reliably. Locks randomly when you do not have your phone on you. Does not lock very often when the phone is there. On one phone it is necessary to turn it on and have the app active, not just running in the background. Defeats the purpose. Would not buy it again.

Easy to install, inconsistent to lock/unlock

    • Written by from Jonesborough

My mom was looking to replace her aging deadbolt and wanted something in nickel. She's not super tech-savy, but likes new gadgets. I recommended spending the money and get one of these Kevo locks. I told her that she could use her iPhone 4s to control the lock while keeping her hands free to carry things into the house. She seemed pretty excited about it, so she spent the money to get one.

The installation for the lock was pretty easy. The instructions were pretty straight forward.
I did several tests with the lock with my iPhone 5s and it seemed to work pretty well. There were times that it was inconsistent. After testing, I found out that it wouldn't do it when the phone was in my pocket, but it would work when I was holding my phone.

I then would test it with her 4s and it would still work inconsistently. Both of us had ordered new iPhones (6 and 6+), and attributed the problems to her 4s being over 3 years old and starting to have Bluetooth problems. I decided to wait it out and see if the new phones had the same problem.

While we waited for our phones to come in, Kevo released a firmware update to the lock (I thought it was really cool that the firmware on the lock can be updated). After the update, my 5s worked much better. We get our new iPhones and the deadbolt is still not 100% accurate at recognizing when a phone is its vicinity but it is better.

Kevo has a great idea here, but the product is not 100% reliable. I recommend the product but only if you have $200+ to spend and some patience.

Don't Buy/Should Have Waited Until Bugs Worked Out

    • Written by from Cerritos

I've had Kevo for almost a year. About ready to throw it in the trash. Lock works without having the Kevo app open or running in the background. You don't even need to touch the lock in order to lock/unlock it; your hand or any part of your body can be as far as 10 inches away and it activates. These are all major security concerns. The fact that I have a secondary gate w/lock is the only reason I haven't removed. Another problem is some family members use the auto lock/unlock feature and some still use the manual key. The problem seems to be that it gets out of sync and the locking mechanism sticks and won't operate at all.

    Love this product - Kevo

    • Written by from denville

I am an empty nester grandma, who recently got her first iPhone, and am loving what it allows me to do. My favorite new product is Kevo, which is on our front door. We used to primarily use the garage door code to gain access from driveway through garage into house. This code pad always made my husband nervous, we know that they're not very secure. Now I am going through the front door, and just touching the Kevo to unlock the door, and I don't have to put down bags, luggade, food. I just love it! My husband doesn't have an iPhone, so he uses the fob on his keychain, and he gets it, b/c the Kevo opens just like his car door, by simple touch. Now we're going to get one for our lakehouse, where we leave an old key under a rock for everyone in the family who uses the house. Now everyone will have an eKey. Smart lock eliminates our bad habits.

    Love it!

I've never installed a door knob or lock. This was so easy. I followed the video step by step. It was simple to replace my existing lock. My contractor had put our deadbolt on the top instead of the usual bottom, so I followed, but the kevo set has a "tail" for the computer, so it overlapped where my doorknob was supposed to be. So I just flipped the two - easy peasy! I'm just glad I already had a deadbolt and didn't need to do any drilling or make indents for the plates.

The function is great! It works well w me and my dtrs iPhone, and my husband uses the key fob. I gave gma one of the 2 spares. The other is in case our iPhones r dead or other situation the remote function wouldn't work. We lock our garage/kitchen door more than before w regular keys (actually never did - only when we left for a trip!). Searching for those were a pain! Recent increases in burglaries kept me nagging everyone to lock, but this works w/o need to nag! And I sleep better at nite!

I bought two, but I had to request a replacement for one of them, as it can be easy to break one of the connector wires if you are not careful to follow the instructions precisely about where to place the wires. That said my wife and I love them.
