    Surprisingly noisy

Surprisingly noisy. Had intended to use this for work - it's now in the drawer as a back-up. Otherwise functions well, transfer speed is fine!

    Save yourself the trouble

    • Written by from Lakewood

Before buying this drive I read a ton of reviews. Like most products out there there were some good and some bad, however I did notice that there were either 4 or 5 star reviews (amazon, sweet water, applestore) or 1 star reviews, nothing really in between. I've had this drive plugged in for 24 hours, and I return to my computer after running errands and have a pop up notification on my computer saying that drive wasn't disconnected properly. I look at the drive, its off. Thats weird, try unplugging it and plugging it back in (because there is no power button) and nothing. Waste of money. Really upset.

    Nice little expensive drive!

    • Written by from San Rafael

Thunderbolt equipped peripherals are more expensive than they need to be but at least this one works.
I have worked on apple products since 1980, starting with an oscilloscope and a soldering iron, so I think I know what I am talking about! Since I still work as a mac mechanic, semi-retired! I had need of a small portable storage device for my clients. Something that could take advantage of the tbolt port speed when the usb port is only a slow 2.0.
It has meet this need for me on many macs so far. Having the USB 3.0 too is great. The speed limitation of this product is really the electro-mechanical disk drive itself. If you are a tech, you can void the warranty and pop an ssd inside the case for some real speed. Or, just look around for a thunderbolt enclosure for a lot less $$once they become more common for consumers and install a small SSD.
Using various software tools, I use it as a startup drive with all sorts of diagnostics to run on customer macs and it has enough storage to also back up my clients macs as fast as possible with todays technology.

Really powerful, but also very fragile

    • Written by from Richmond Hill

This drive works amazingly fast. I edit videos off of it with no problems, and it transfers huge files very quickly. My only complaint is that it's extremely fragile, so you have to be careful handling it. My drive got damaged, but I will be purchasing this one again because I liked it so much.

Broke after 2 months of light use

    • Written by from Gainesville

I bought this drive to store some Windows programs to use on bootcamp, and I only used it a few times over the last month. Over the holidays, I used it for a few hours straight and the drive just stopped working. It now makes an audible clicking sound when plugged in, and does nothing else.

The drive is poorly designed. It does look nice, but if you plan on actually using the drive as anything but an aesthetic paperweight, I would advise against spending your money on this.

I will be RMA'ing the drive, but I am not sure if I will ever trust my data on this poorly engineered device.

One of the best mobile HD I have ever used.

    • Written by from Saint Paul

I have been using this drive for about three weeks now and I have had no problems. I needed a small but fast drive that used thunderbolt for data transfer. So far this drive has worked just great. It is extremely fast and reliable.

    Terrible Product

    • Written by from GLENSIDE

I've purchased 3 of these and all have broken in a 1-2 year time frame. And I've not transported them around, either. They've sat on my desk. I would recommend purchasing a LaCie instead.

    Very hot

    • Written by from NEW YORK

I bought this as a replacement Time Machine drive because my GLYPH drive was too noisy. I've used G-DRIVE mini's before and really liked them. BUT I wish I had paid attention to the reviews that said this drive runs very hot. I don't really feel comfortable having a drive this hot as my Time Machine drive. And it never seems to cool down, not even when sitting there unused. The G-Drive mini's were never this warm. I'm not sure if I'll return it or not but I regret buying it (for Time Machine).
I bought it because Thunderbolt was more convenient for me (my Macbook Pro has 2 thunderbolt connections but only one USB which I use for other things).

I use this external drive to clone my MBA 2013. It has a small footprint, comes with a TB and USB 3 cables. The portability makes it a good match for MBP and MBA.

Better Back it Up!!! NOT GOOD!!!!

    • Written by from Simi Valley

Bought it in December, in March - IT JUST STOPPED WORKING. Took it apart (could care less about the warranty I wanted my information) and could not get the drive to work with any connection. Had backed it up three months before, but still it is only four months old. My next stop is a profession service taking it apart in a clean room and seeing what they can get. The internal drive was a no-name drive the first tech never heard of. DO NOT BUY THIS JUNK!!!!

    solid purchase

    • Written by from Lethbridge

Just bought this drive a couple of days ago. So far so good. Performance is great. I have windows 8.1 running on it for my mac and it's fantastic. Just wish there was an SSD version. Only thing is that it gets pretty warm when in use. I was actually surprised by how hot it got. I have a couple of other portable USB 3.0 drives and they run drastically cooler. Other than that, its great. Super nice. Looks good next to my 13 inch retina pro.

    Bad Luck or ?

    • Written by from Pipe Creek

Purchased on with new MBP 3" Retina. First one worked with Thunderbolt but not USB. Exchanged at Apple Store - No issue. Second one worked for 30 minutes then nothing.

    Better than hoped for

    • Written by from CLARK

I used the Thunderbolt cable, not the USB-3 cable.

It performs better than I had hoped for on my 2012 13" MacBook Air -2 GHz i7 processor, 8 GB memory, 256 GB Flash drive. It is silent and fast beyond expectations. As a backup drive (not Time Machine), no setup is required -- installation is instantaneous. Next week, I will try installing another identical G-Tech drive for Time Machine purposes on a 2014 21.5" iMac (also 256 Flash drive) being delivered to me.

I bought the G-Tech drive at an Apple Store. A salesperson told me that G-Tech drives generally are for business, and that this drive is a high-end consumer product.

Very fast little drive. I just wish G-Technology offered an SSD version!

    • Written by from Pittsburg

Indeed as the other reviewer points out, the G-Drive Mobile has an elegant and very minimalistic design. It's bus powered which reduces cable clutter, is fanless so noise is very minimal, and it uses Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 so it's very fast. My current setup has all USB ports on my iMac being used up with one unused Thunderbolt port left, so this drive was perfect for me. I was happy to finally see a respectable Mac drive manufacturer make a bus powered Thunderbolt drive.

The only thing I really wish is for G-Technology to also offer an SSD version of this drive. However anyone looking for mass storage will love this drive.

This is a super fast hard drive both thunderbolt and usb 3.0, I really recommend more than the Buffalo. Elegant design.
