    A Mr. Clean Magic Eraser...

...works best to clean the scroll ball. Using scissors, cut off a small piece of the Magic Eraser (because you don't need to waste an entire one). Dampen it, lay it on a flat sturdy surface and then turn the Apple Mouse upside down and roll the scroll ball along the Magic Eraser horizontally and then vertically. Then use a paper towel or a lint free cloth to dry it. I did this with the wireless version and it worked great. I gave it four stars because it's a really good mouse, wired or wireless. It would have been five stars if the scroll ball had been a touch sensor instead. Then, like optical mice, they wouldn't need to be cleaned on a regular basis.

    MIRACLE PAPER!!!

Wow! Thanks to whoever discovered the paper trick!! If you're having trouble with the roller ball, unplug the mouse, and roll it on a piece of paper in every direction for a minute or two. fuzz and particles came off on the paper. it works now!! <3

    CHEAP

Worst mouse ever. It lasted all of 3 months and started to die. First it started right-clicking EVERYTHING and now it won't scroll downward. Spend the money and just buy the Magic Mouse instead.

Do yourself a favor and replace this mouse

I've been struggling with my mouse since I got it. For a month it wouldn't scroll up. Then it started working fine again. Now it won't scroll down. The left click and right click aren't responsive and I regularly have to click an item multiple times for it to register. So, if you're having trouble with your mouse, don't waste your time. It's not your imagination or your fault. It's a poor product. Get a new, different mouse right away.

    Scroll Ball nightmare

The scroll ball will constantly become clogged with use and no longer perform. My family have gone through 10 mice in the past year. Thats right 10. We have the extended warrantee. Otherwise, it would be $49 each time. Scroll ball needs major redesign.

    Junk!

Scroll ball not scrolling anymore... no way to take it out or clean it. It scrolls up fine, but not down.

    Inconsistent Scrolling

The Mighty Mouse is sleek and efficient but the scrolling ball is just pathetic. After a few months it will not scroll either up or down. You have to clean it with a disinfectant wipe and hope that solves the issue.

    Hand Sanitizer

I have the same problem with the mouse as everyone else. Whenever my ball stops scrolling I take a paper towel with a generous dab of hand sanitizer on it and roll the ball in the hand sanitizer until it starts working again. Sometimes it take a couple of tries but it works for me every time. I only rated it 3 stars because I'm getting sick of having to do it all the time.

Extremely poor quality - very unlike Apple

Save your money and buy a real mouse from Logitech. The scroll ball in this mouse is so fragile and sensitive. I've had it for less than two months and the thing has stopped working. I can't scroll up anymore - an extreme annoyance. Now I've got to hike up to the Apple store to see if they can fix it or return it. Apple needs to do better quality testing.

    Good, but not so good.

The mouse itself is good looking, and fits the hand nicely. The only problem(s) I have with this product is that:

    1. The side buttons get accidentally hit a lot. (well for me)

    2. The track ball stops working over time.

Going to #1, usually when I'm surfing the web, running an application that requires the mouse, I always hit those two side buttons. I know you can reprogram them to nothing, but I like to use it for expose and find it difficult to get used to.

Going to #2, the track ball does stop working over time. I've had the mouse for approx. 4-5 months and the track ball cannot scroll up. This is from the ball attracting dirt, therefore the dirt goes into the tracking system and disconnects the ball from the tracker. (Sorry If I didn't explain it thoroughly; I did the best I could)

The mouse works fine other then those two flaws. The touch case sensitive buttons are perfect, the DPI is nice, and it looks like a good, reasonable glamourous Apple product.

Great Invention — Squeak noise kills it

Overall this is a superior product. My problem is that it squeaks EVERY TIME I CLICK! AHHH! Annoying to say the least.

However the track ball rolls as it should. Optical is precise. Easy to keep clean. You can program it very easily via OSX and it's a pleasure to use.

However I'm not the first that has stated that these MM's are squeaky. :(

For overall use I'd say 4-1/2 stars but due to the annoying squeak I have to rate it a 3.

    it's sad but true

sadly, this is one of the most unreliable apple products I have ever purchased.

within only a couple of months use, the scroll ball has stopped tracking downwards, and will now only scroll up -- such a pain.

what really gets me is that this product has a fairly high price point -- all of these problems should be addressed immediately by apple. this is defective by design, and for all those of us (sad saps) who bought them should be able to get what we paid for ... a fully functional mouse :(

take a look around and see how many other people are saying the same thing

    COMPLETELY WORTHLESS!!!!!

I bought a new Apple desktop computer a couple of months ago and found myself going back to the store because the scrolling button on the mouse stopped working. They tested it in the store and it started working again. So, I took it home and it worked for about a month. Now the scrolling ball will not scroll down. It never really scrolled horizontally!!! So, back to the Apple store I go with this WORTHLESS GARBAGE!!! I'm UPSET beyond words, but take some solace in knowing I'm not alone. Apple should take this junk off the market.

    The Mouse that works

Read several reviews as the scroll ball would scroll up but not down. Then it would scroll down but not up. The first time I used canned air to spray everywhere around the scroll ball and it started working again. After several weeks it stopped scrolling up. I did the spray a second time it stopped hoping it would scroll up. No deal. After reading about the paper method, I did that, and it works like a charm. Yes it's a hassle, but regardless how clean you keep things, including your finger, stuff does get on the ball. I don't intend to wear an exam glove on my 'mouse hand' to prevent the natural oils and don't plan on building a mini clean room in which to stick my hand to operate the mouse. But the paper solution does work. for those that don't or cant scroll to see the entry, I unplugged the mouse, got a clean sheet of paper and rolled the scroll ball in every which direction and plugged it back in and it works great. I don't work for Apple, and am a recent convert from Windows.

The piece of paper trick works

holy smokes it works. i just unplugged the mouse, turned it upside down, and pressed the little round ball scroller on the paper for like 30 seconds, in every direction, and now the scroller is working again. excellent tip, thanks.

    Good, but not for long!!

This is very disappointing!! This mouse doesn't not work or last very long. Don't buy, choose another one, not worth $50 bucks!

    Good mouse except...

for the little trackball! When it works, it's great, but after months of prolonged use, it sticks and becomes a HUGE annoyance! So frustrating!

How the Mighty Mouse Has Fallen

In the space of four years I have had six or seven of what used to be called "Mighty Mouse." All have malfunctioned. And all have been replaced at my local Apple Store. The scroll ball stops functioning -- and nothing I do can fix it. This may well be the worst product ever produced by Apple. And I note that it is now called "Apple Mouse," the misnomer "Mighty" having been abandoned -- for good reason.

I use an Imac -- and It is very frustrating to constantly experience the same problem with each successive mouse. Can't Apple, clearly the world's most sophisticated technology company, make a simple wired mouse that doesn't repeatedly fail?

    Hate this!

I used this mouse in journalism and photoshop classes and I cannot deal with it! The ball never works and it is not ergonomically correct at all. I would not recommend this at any price.

Been through too many of these things...

I am on my third mouse and have given up replacing it. When I get a new one it will work fine for awhile but then it will only scroll in one direction. Shortly after that it will stop scrolling all together. They have all had the same problem.
