    Gadgets cannot connect right away & signal is lost most of the time

    The first generation airport express was really a performer. So after 3 years of being impressed by its performance, I decided to get this new airport express a few months ago. I was disappointed. My gadgets (iphone, mac, belkin switches, ipads, smart tv) can't connect to the new express right away. I have to search the wifi signal and type in the codes again. Very disappointing product!

    Airport Express bogs down download speeds on connected devices.

    I had an Apple Express hooked up in my living room, close to the Apple TV which btw works really well. However, I started to notice that when I had my Mac Air in the same living room and "hooked up" via express that web screens loaded pretty slowly. I ran Speakeasy to check to see what was up and found that the unit was running at a snails pace, causing the computer to get down under 1 meg some times, even when the Apple TV wasn't being used. I went to my desktop MAC and ran Speakeasy and was getting the 12meg speeds I'm paying ATT for, so dismissing ATT as a culprit, I moved the Express to other parts of the house, tested, and got less than half speed regardless of the location. I then removed (unplugged) the Express and checked again and even with all devices (6-7) connected to the Extreme Base Unit. The download speeds were at back to the correct 12meg making me wonder why I bought the Express in the first place. Bottom line. (My) Express runs at best half-speed so I unplugged it, and told Airport Utility to "forget it" which removed it from my network. Live and learn. I am still a huge Apple fan and have had no other problems to speak of with any other Apple equipment. I just feel lucky that it was an easy problem to solve and even if it was $99 throw-away item, no one, including Apple is 100%.

    Suitable, maybe, for throwing through Apple Store window

    This device fails to live up to Apple's reputation of building quality products that "just work." I purchased it for its airplay capabilities. Mistake. It's either not visible for airplay streaming or streams for 20 minutes then disconnects. Airplay is not ready for prime time or even small time.

    Worst Apple's product ever - streaming just DOESN'T work

    I can't believe this product has 4 stars. Try to stream music with AirPlay... Every model of this device had issues with frequent music drop out when streaming... and unfortunately I'm the owner of this model...
    More than four years of complains of other users on Apple's forum...

    If you're going to buy it in order to stream music - think twice :-)...

    I wanted these to be amazing

    I bought an AirPort Time Capsule and two Expresses to extend the network.

    I find myself rebooting the Expresses on a regular basis just to have them come up and barely boost my network. The Internet is unusable when connected to either of the Expresses and usually end up using my iPhone's cellular connection. I got both replaced thinking it was just extreme bad luck but as it turns out even with the latest firmware these Airports are frustratingly disappointing.

    Apple makes great products but maybe wireless is something best left for the Netgears of the world.

    Hopefully a firmware update will come soon but I am most definitely not holding my breath, until them I am purging my house of these sadly sub-par routers and extenders.

    worked great for a year

    I HAD one that worked well for the first year, then it started cutting out every now and then and it was all down hill from there. Once it started cutting out when playing music it was dead within 2 or 3 months. Would like another one but not gonna keep spending $100 every year for a new airport express.

    Apple airport express (not impressed)

    It worked good at first but now It's very frustrating, only works about 1/2-3/4 of the time. You have to hit it just right for it to work, I have to take my phone off wireless most of the time in order for me to connect. In fact That is how I am writing this review (no wireless, using cellular). What good is that? We only have 4 devices connected at our house, so it is not the number of devices. Ready to go back to my old wireless device. Also, does not work with a VPN connection to my work, I've had our IT guys try and try to get it to work and it doesn't. And we have an Apple certified tech at our work and could not get it to work.

    Airport Expressly Useless

    We have a number of Apple products in our home (MacBook Pros, iPhones, iPods, Time Capsule) and, sadly, an Airport Express. The Express was initially purchased to stream music though it seemed to suffer from wireless dead zones in our home. Attempts to use it as a network extender (from our Time Capsule base) have been only temporarily successful with no predictable reason for it working or not. After multiple resets, online advice and directions, more time has been spent trying to fix the device than actually using it.

    Does not work as advertised

    This was sold as a network extender with a promise in store that it does not matter what type of network you have. This is not true. It would not work with my Cisco network and Apple product support admitted that it does not work with any network other than apple networks (apparently the representatives I spoke to get between 2 and 4 calls a day about this so it is a major problem). I have not tried it with an apple network, but based on previous promises I would not waste my money buying one to find out. Of course in order to find out it doesn't work you have to open the package, so guess what - no refund. Am not impressed with after sales service for this product and since it is our first time needing after sales support it really makes us ponder any further purchases from apple.

    Sometimes it works!

    I've had this little cube for several years now and while streaming music using AirPlay from my MacBook Pro works pretty well most of the time, in the past few months (and I suspect since the release of iOS8) streaming music over AirPlay from my iPhone is just a non-starter. It'll work for maybe 4-5 minutes and then the connection between the phone and the AirPort Express will go down. I know for sure the home network is not the issue. Gonna have to look to other products that support AirPlay, because sadly, on this one, Apple has delivered a doozy. Don't buy.

    Never thought I'd hate any Apple product....

    However, this one I do hate because it tarnishes the brand I love. Worked OK (not great) for about 4 months, but about 10 days ago it just starting behaving erratically. The green light glows, but nothing is coming through. If you connect directly to the cable modem the signal is fine. I bought a new ethernet cable thinking maybe there was a broken wire but it did not help. I have tried everything: new cable modem, new ethernet cables, new location, reset button, holy water, you name it, I've tried it. Devices will not connect to it and when they do they drop the signal after a few minutes. As of this morning I replaced it with a Belkin that costs 1/2 the price and so far, so good. Buyer beware: just because it has the Apple doesn't mean it performs like one.

    Airplay is horrible/Router ok

    I bought 2 of these things for a 1500 sqft space and these suckers aren't particle. Network drops out from one end of the space to the other so I have to always walk toward the main one to get stable coverage. Also the Airplay is the only reason I got 2 of them and that feature is horrible, it never works. Maybe works for 1 min then starts dropping out. Apple's quality is really is starting to become like it was back in the 90s. Cool outside box with poor components inside and at the $99 price rage you'd hope for a better product.

    AirPort Express Product Failure

    Purchased Airport Express November 2013. Defective product from the beginning. Very difficult & many unsuccessful tries to set up. Finally set up and worked....for 3 weeks. Quit working and back to several tries on my part, and when support could not get it to set up -- conclusion -- a defective unit. Replacement is on its way.

    okay, but limited

    Note: I have a Windows 7 PC. I was tired of plugging my computer/phone directly into my stereo to use the speakers. In iTunes ONLY, the AirPort worked and I was able to play music wirelessly. I listen to a lot of music online, though, and the AirPort will ONLY play from iTunes, at least on a PC. There's a fix that will let me play from other programs (ex., browsers), but it's a 3rd party program--Airfoil--and costs $30. Even with that program, I can't use the AirPort for video (Netflix, etc.) audio because there's a delay and there is NO SOLUTION for PC yet (there is an Airfoil video program for OS that claims to fix the delay). These limitations weren't clear in the product descriptions or reviews, so I'm posting this as a caveat. The idea of the AirPort is great, but it's utility is limited. I'm disappointed in the lack of available software for it, and that it didn't come with software that would make it more generally compatible. Not being able to use it when streaming video is particularly annoying, as that was one of my primary motivations for trying it.

    Overpriced paperweight - would have given 0 starts

    It is hard to find a good thing to say about the Airport Express. When using it to extend a 2011 Airport Extreme, it failed miserably, both as a wired and as a wireless extender. Setup was difficult and slow and it would appear that v6 of the Airport Utility had a great deal of functionality removed from it in comparison to v5. (this missing functionality made problems quite difficult to diagnose). When I finally had it connected as a wired extender (via an ethernet cable), the network would actually drop completely every 5 minutes or so. Also, don't even think about using some non-Apple networking equipment with this. The Express would not work with the Netgear Powerline 500 network extenders (and the brand new ASUS router that I bought would, with no effort).

    Given the incredibly high price ($100), you can get FAR better devices that do significantly more at a much lower price point.

    Doesn't work wirelessly with VERIZON

    After three hours of trying everything I stumbled upon a Verizon forum for DSL connections dslreports (dotcom) /faq/12506
    The short answer is that the router that Verizon uses (Actiontec), will not work wirelessly with the Airport Express. You have to hardwire the secondary router.
    Back to the store it went and I spent the time wiring instead.
    I gave 1 star for lack of literature on this on the part of Apple.

    Shockingly Bad

    Do not buy this. I bought it to create wireless printing capability for my new iMac and to boost the wireless signal. The wireless printing works, but the wireless signal is appalling. It only works intermittently and the signal from the cable company supplied router is actually stronger.

    In short, not worth it.

    ...but that was years ago. They are frustrating and opaque. They work until they don't. A ten or twenty dollar bluetooth device is almost certain to be better. I own Apple stock, and I challenge anyone to name a worse Apple product.

    Worst Apple product ever

    If you are using this as a stand alone wifi router it's mediocre at best. Trying to add it to an existing wifi network and having it work consistently is a joke. If you do get lucky and get it to work NEVER change anything with your network. That's $80 I'll never get back.
