    Worst Apple product ever

    • Written by from boring

If you are using this as a stand alone wifi router it's mediocre at best. Trying to add it to an existing wifi network and having it work consistently is a joke. If you do get lucky and get it to work NEVER change anything with your network. That's $80 I'll never get back.

    Flawless!

    • Written by from Lytle Creek

I bought this together with an Airport Extreme, mostly as a WiFi extender to bring internet to a somewhat remote location on my property. After a simple setup of the Airport Extreme, this little device simply began to work, before I could even download it's utility. Doesn't get better than that. A vast improvement over my previously used and utterly unreliable netgear router system. I used the utility/app only to double check and set up a guest network. I am very pleased with this product.

Almost never works - audio drops constantly!

    • Written by from Plano

I bought the 2nd gen because Apple kindly stopped allowing my to connect to my old device so I can no longer configure it. I've tried every setting but my Mac can rarely connect to this new one. My iPhone and iPad can find it easier but the audio drops every few seconds making it completely useless. All other devices I have can connect just fine to the network. Online help is useless. I'm returning it.

After a lightening storm took out my trusty Cisco router I decided to give the Airport a shot. This was so simple to setup, I did so from my iPad. The internet is fast and it works with all my devices with no problem. I highly recommend this product especially if you want less headache!

Great Range Increase and Easy Setup

    • Written by from Stuart

I was getting frequent drops on my home Comcast WiFi system. After reading the reviews on the AirPort Express I decided to purchase one. I noticed Apple had a refurbished unit for $72 including shipping, so I decided to purchase it. In the meantime I had hoped that the Comcast tech that was scheduled to come and check out my network would arrive after I received the Airport Express. Sure enough, about 30 minutes prior to the tech arriving my Airport Express was delivered by FedEx. I waited until the tech arrived to connect it just to see what his reaction would be. He saw I had purchased the Apple product and said it would really be an improvement to my internet and it would be more stable. Sure enough, the ease of installing it and the performance and range really did improve. You must first have a modem as this is only a router, but I decided to still keep my Comcast modem/router unit until I get another single modem which I presume will be a Motorola Surfboard which he recommended. My main goal at the beginning was to get back up and running again. I recommend this product to any one wishing to improve their internet service.

    FLAWLESS-Another great apple product!!!

    • Written by from Dickinson

I have not had any problems with this product and have had it for going on 8 months.
It was an addition to my existing home (1,800 Sq ft) network. 3TB time Capsule, AirPort Extreme and 1st Gen. AirPort (1st fl streaming) Express.

Modem and Time Capsule are on 1st fl. and this unit is on 2nd fl. about 40' apart through a concrete wall and floor. This is my only wired connection.

I use it to extend my network on 2nd fl for Apple TV, streaming music and surfing the net.

I have read many of the lower rated reviews and as with any router- location is very important. Avoid electrical interference. Do not try to hide this unit if you expect great range-place at desk to shoulder height.

If you need AAAdo router for multiple people like me you should get this device right now. If you have only 20 people on this network at once out of fifty it's lightning fast. Even if 50 are on this router it's still fast plus it has many great features. Buy this product now!

    Not what I wanted exactly....

    • Written by from BRONX

Bought this at an apple store, after the rep assured me this will work as a repeater for my Fios router... he was wrong, very easy to set up and use, but just isn't compatible with the Fios Actiontec (the worst router i've ever owned btw)
But i'm giving it a chance as an independent station for guests and air printing - i'll have to rethink my network layout and then hopefully i can properly utilize this nifty little gadget.

    Worst Apple product yet.

    • Written by from Seattle

I had the old version of this which worked GREAT for about 7 years. No issues. Then the software updates made it to where my Mac would no longer communicate with the now ancient white brick.

So, I updated to this one about a year ago. Worked just fine, initially. Now, streaming music over Airplay works maybe 10% of the time and now the Wifi is dropping out. I've connected via ethernet and reset SEVERAL times to fix the issue and once I attach it to my existing wireless network, I can no longer connect to the internet. It was like watching someone's health get progressively worse. And out of warranty, out of luck.

HOW? How could Apple release such an inferior product?

when i first bought this i wasn't sure how to use it because i thought it extended the wireless network i was on, while i was at a hospital at the time their wifi wasn't the best so i thought this would simply make it better but i was wrong. i held onto it until i moved into a home and hooked up the new network and come to find out it saved me 50 bucks by essentially working as wireless router. and my signal is strong and it works better then i ever imagined thank you apple keep up the good products. home run with this...

    Works awesome to extend extreme

    • Written by from Long Valley

I just purchased one today and set it up to extend my 5ghz network from my extreme. It took 2 minutes to setup and that included the time to find the perfect spot. Before I put this in ,the 5 ghz only went to about 25% of my house and with the express w/extender setup, the 5ghz now covers my entire house which is great for all of our apple products. Highly recommend and super thrilled.

    Why a power cord!

    • Written by from Earlysville

Mostly Apple gets it right. However, removing the option of directly plugging in the AP extreme into a wall outlet, is just plain wrong. The AP extreme is a small device, < 4" square and weights 8.5 oz. The power cord overwhelms this little guy! Anybody know of an OEM that makes a wall adaptor for it?

    Excellent Network Extender

    • Written by from Chicago

I am not big on writing product reviews. Other than this one and one for the Airport Time Capsule, I have only written maybe three others. A product has to really impress me for me to make the effort to write a review. Also, I will admit I was an Apple hater until 2011 when I got my first iPhone. Last year I replaced my PC with a Mac Air and I’m fully hooked!

I used the AirPort Express to extend my network. Works like a charm! Only word of caution, ignore the instructions provided in the Support section on this site. Just make sure the Airport Express is with in range of your Extreme, Time Capsule, or Express base station; plug it in; start Airport Utility and click extend network.

    Best WIFI router we've owned.

    • Written by from Geneva

Over the years we have used three service providers, ATT (SBC, Ameritech), Comcast and Verizon. We've used various versions of modems with three different router vendors. Without a doubt the Express has been the most reliable of the three. Our last router had deteriorated into at least a once a day reset. Considering a flight of stairs was involved, it became a royal PITA. The only time I have reset problems is when our current provider has system outages. Otherwise, it is stable as a rock even during heavy lightning storms or after power outages.

Some of the complaints on reliability had me concerned but we have now had ours for 17 months without a glitch. It supports 2 iPhones, 1 iPad, 1 MacAir, 1 Playstation, 2 Windows laptops and 2 TVs across three levels, each of which has approximately 900 sqft/level, from a location on the first level and has enough gas to cover the front porch and rear deck as well.

Today, I finally used the AirPlay feature when I moved an old PC speaker system to the lower level, plugged it in and my iPhone was playing music to the connected system immediately, no reconfiguration needed. Apple makes high tech gear that is invisible, not an obstacle and that's why we have continued to add to our  collection!

    Not exactly thrilled.

    • Written by from AUSTIN

I am a devoted Apple man with three I-Macs over 12 years, plus an I-Phone.
So the choice of Airport Express was a no brainer for me.
It cratered one week after the one-year warranty expired! Planned obsolesce? Apple so much as said "too bad".
Additionally, the Internet speed was noticeably slower on the Wi-Fi than on a direct connect to the Time Warner modem.
To me, A.E. is form over function.
