    It's great... I guess

    Bought one at the apple store about one year and two weeks ago from now, and it literally died on me today (it was kinda good when it worked tho). I'm not sure what to think about this. My last router lasted about 6 years, the durability of Apple products nowadays just isn't what is was back in the day. Getting the thing set up was a hassle too. Not to mention I originally bought this product to extend my primary router (not an AirPort Extreme) and in store they told me it was possible. Well it is, if you want to plug in an ethernet cable! It'd be a nice feature to see support for extending other routers too, you know (without the use of ethernet). AirPlay worked fine for me tho, great feature. But yesterday I tried to move the AirPort Express from the office to the bedroom for better coverage so my Apple TV would find my network (which I have done before without any problems), and I plugged in the cable, guess what... the blinking amber light of death (kinda). I have tried putting in a static IP which didn't work, automatic IP didn't assign the right IP or it'd just self-assign. Did a soft reset, a hard reset and a factory reset without any luck. And yes I plugged into the WAN port lol. Anyways I tried to connect it to different sockets around the house with no luck so hopefully they will send me a new one. Miss you Steve!

    Good product except for the Ethernet Bandwidth limited to 100Mbps, and the WiFi n and not ac.
    I think it's preferable to wait for a new version.

    Best Little Router You Can Buy

    The AirPort Express is the best little router you can buy. I purchased it to replace a combo Netgear ADSL Modem + Router (all in one) because the wireless was giving me quite a bit of trouble despite tweaking settings, changing channels, and so forth. So, I was looking for a small and compact router that offered wireless, but also one that worked well with my Mac products. The AirPort Express does all of that, and it's affordable. I did look at the AirPort Extreme as well, but I was still settled with the small size of the Express.

    So, I've gone back to a separate ADSL Modem and then separate router because the combo ones just don't work well from my experience over the past few years. It's actually nicer in my opinion for troubleshooting problems too as now it could be the modem or the Express (should you be having problems) instead of trying to figure it out with a combo unit.

    Overall though, despite those points, the AirPort Express is great. Easy to setup and I was online again within 5 minutes, surfing faster with great wireless coverage throughout the house. The Express sure is impressive in that it can do all that from a tiny box. Love this product! Thanks Apple for making a quality router series.

    Excellent Router- Tricky to set up with Line of Sight Wireless Providers

    Wireless internet providers with line of sight radio systems (non-cable/ADSL) must set up your router for security reasons before your internet will work on this router. Do not plug the Ethernet cable directly from the router to your computer before the provider has registered your router. The router will pick up your computers IP address and not the IP from the internet provider and it is challenging to re-register the proper IP on the Airport Express router after it picked up your computer. Also the router must not be in the Bridge Mode. Set it for DHCP mode. After the provider has registered the router, you must un-plug the wireless system from the provider and the power from the router. Power up the providers system first, wait 2 minutes then power up the Airport Express router. Once it powers up again, it will automatically register the proper IP address and your online. Very happy with the small footprint router and have 5 bars on my new Apple TV unit 40 feet away through walls and furnace room. Working great. Very happy so far.

    Not for Wifi Extender

    This product is not made to extend your wifi unless you have an apple router. If you have any other 3rd party router, it will not work with this item.

    Smashed into many bits

    I am a crossbreed user of MS and Apple products. I have many years in this game. This product is another example of Apple and the need to dumb it down to a point where it becomes complex and quite stupid. Why would you want a web interface like every other product known to man? No, No, No! We are Apple. Try this software and you can start to pull your hair our rather quickly. Range...poor. Quality...looks great. Setup...absolutely the worst experience. In many pieces now and have discovered that there is more metal and plastic weight to it than guts, Open the utility...it sees the airport. Oops sign in please...oops...check you connection...oops...sign in...oops...check your connection. Smash! HULK ANGRY AT APPLE GARBAGE!

    Color me impressed

    Because Apple allows anyone to post a review without verifying if they actually made a purchase I'm suspicious of the negative reviews. With that being said I consider this one of my best purchases from Apple. I was able to return my Xfinity router/modem combo that I was renting and have this up and running with just my iPhone! First off it's incredibly easy to set up just download the Airport Utility App and follow the simple instructions! As for as performance, I'm experiencing much better performance than I was experiencing with the Xfinity SMC router. I literally thought that I was going to have to pay for the top of the line internet service to ge5 the performance that I wanted. No more buffering and no more difficulty logging onto my game online. I highly recommend this product!!

    Frustration and Disbelief

    This review is to report the same as many here in one-star-land: the Airport Express is a failure.

    After using an Airport Extreme for many years, it burned itself out, as can be expected with routers. We purchased the Express and it worked as advertised - plug and play - and we were linked to the internet again.

    The product worked for over a year, but then failed catastrophically, dropping the signal from our modem sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes 10 seconds, after re-booting.

    FRUSTRATION
    It was a frustrating week in our household. I am a help desk person and have trouble shot many problems, but this one problem has taken me in so many places for answers, with only minimal response/results. Everyone, excluding Apple, has a different suggestion for how/why this can be fixed. Here are a few that temporarily worked, but ultimately were not able to save our Airport:
    • Factory Reset of both modem and Airport
    • Re-installation of firmware for both modem and Airport
    • Change the broadcast channels
    • Change from WPA to WPA2 (and between private and enterprise)
    • Change from DHCP to static
    • Change DHCP from automatic to manual
    • And a few more adjustments (including movement of Airport to new location(s), standing on one foot, mystic chant, etc.)

    My conclusion:
    I am not a trained network specialist, but I am an extremely seasoned trouble-shooter who can get results. This is a rare failure that still annoys the part of my brain that wants to FIND the answer. My belief is that the "form factor" of this sleek little module is ultimately its downfall. It gets hot, and this is the enemy to any electronic device.

    Last month, I replaced it with a Netgear router, and in comparison, it is the same weight, but spread out over a larger area with plenty of ventilation. It is one of the middle range routers for price and power, but the connection for our household of 6-8 simultaneous running devices has NEVER BEEN BETTER.

    DISBELEIF
    I hope that this is the last Apple product that fails like this, we have always liked and supported Apple, "because is just works."

    Not as easy as it seems...

    I wasted one hour of my life trying to get this thing to work. I bought it to replace a MediaLink router, but after an hour (or maybe even longer), I gave up and just went back to my old router.

    The actual set up is very easy but none of my devices could pick up the router. It was showing up as an option, the light was steady green but when I connected it it, I would get a greyed out wifi logo with an exclamation point. I think more configuration needed to be done but Apple did not provide instructions on this anywhere.

    Worst Apple product yet.

    I had the old version of this which worked GREAT for about 7 years. No issues. Then the software updates made it to where my Mac would no longer communicate with the now ancient white brick.

    So, I updated to this one about a year ago. Worked just fine, initially. Now, streaming music over Airplay works maybe 10% of the time and now the Wifi is dropping out. I've connected via ethernet and reset SEVERAL times to fix the issue and once I attach it to my existing wireless network, I can no longer connect to the internet. It was like watching someone's health get progressively worse. And out of warranty, out of luck.

    HOW? How could Apple release such an inferior product?

    I wanted these to be amazing

    I bought an AirPort Time Capsule and two Expresses to extend the network.

    I find myself rebooting the Expresses on a regular basis just to have them come up and barely boost my network. The Internet is unusable when connected to either of the Expresses and usually end up using my iPhone's cellular connection. I got both replaced thinking it was just extreme bad luck but as it turns out even with the latest firmware these Airports are frustratingly disappointing.

    Apple makes great products but maybe wireless is something best left for the Netgears of the world.

    Hopefully a firmware update will come soon but I am most definitely not holding my breath, until them I am purging my house of these sadly sub-par routers and extenders.

    ...but that was years ago. They are frustrating and opaque. They work until they don't. A ten or twenty dollar bluetooth device is almost certain to be better. I own Apple stock, and I challenge anyone to name a worse Apple product.

    Staff at Apple Store explained in simple language what to do, so I bought one and brought it home and had it running in less than 10 minutes as an extension of my Time Capsule. So simple. Well done Apple.

    Great for apple products, does not work with any other routher!

    Not for anything other than Apple products. Apple has set up the express to only extend apple networks. They say it is easy but if you have any router other than an apple product creating your network, you can not use an express to extend a network. If found this out the hard way and I'm a little upset about it. My time capsule will no longer boot, it was creating my network for my business. This put my entire company off line and prevented my system from backing up. It was also baking up my office computer that handles all accounting and photography work. This was a huge frustration. I decided instead of putting everything into one basket so that when it crashed at least the other would still work. I was going to get a router and an external drive for the back up. Well, now I can't extend my network anymore. Thanks Apple for not letting people know about this!

    Worst Apple product ever

    If you are using this as a stand alone wifi router it's mediocre at best. Trying to add it to an existing wifi network and having it work consistently is a joke. If you do get lucky and get it to work NEVER change anything with your network. That's $80 I'll never get back.

    Just bought my new Airport Express

    Incredible - my last router lasted 11 years. I am sold on Apple! I set up my Airport Express in 3 minutes!!! Highly recommend this device. All my devices recognized it immediately! I am sold!!!
