    It’s alright.

    • Written by from Winter haven

I’ve had my MacBook Pro for nearly 4 years now and I’m just now experiencing the fraying of the chord. I did wrap it with electrical tape but the casing just comes off further and further down. I know it came from rubbing on my desk edge for so long so I expected the fraying but it should still be better built. Other than that, it does what it’s supposed to and hopefully I don’t need to buy another one for a few more years.

    Frayed cords

    • Written by from York

I have used a hot glue gun to coat the portion of the cord that is frayed and overlap onto area that is not frayed. As the glue starts to get hard, just mold it around the cord. This worked great for me and saved me from buying another cord. It would be best to do this sooner before the fraying gets too bad.

    Been decent.

    • Written by from El Dorado Hills

I've had my MacBook Pro for 3 years now, and only within the last 15 months did the cord actually turn brown and within the last 10 months did the cord actually rip. I put some electrical tape on it and covered it, but the tearing has gotten worse. Otherwise it did a great job for 3 years. Will get another one and write another review if it fails like everyone else's appears to.

I opened my laptop and it was at 4% battery, nothing new. So i plug in the charger and connect it to the computer and i smell something burning literally one minute later. I start looking around and I see SMOKE right next to my face coming from the charger! It burned through the rubber. This is the second time this happens. I had ANOTHER charger get so hot that it started MELTING.

    Good Design, poor manufacturing..

    • Written by from Sevierville

The idea and design of this product is way better than anything in the PC world and goes a long way to save the laptop from in advertent harm. Unfortunately it is the manufacturing that has caused it the issues. I believe that if Apple continues to turn back to US production they may be able to remedy issues like this. For those young college students who would review this product, you should have more experience in Apple and for that matter computer products before making negative comments regarding this or any other such hardware.

Please try this before buying a new adaptor

    • Written by from PALO ALTO

I had no idea that these adaptors had such a poor ratinguntil I came to this page. I have had my MacBook Pro around 4 years now so I guess I'm lucky I've had no issues with the adapter to this point. I just had a problem that my MacBook would not charge when I plugged the power adapter in. I read through some of the reviews here and noticed one that said to try pushing something on the prongs inside the magnetic head on the adapter that attaches to the computer as they can have issues. I tried that and it worked! My MacBook is now happily charging and I just saved myself $80...

The 60 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter is good but nothing stay forever, I had this charger for about 1-2 years now maybe even more. I dislike this T-style on the little wire side, The first time I seen that I really had a bad feeling about that, that will cause me problems with the natural put away system.
"Designed to be the perfect traveling companion, the adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage." from the apple web site.

    It's okay

    • Written by from Brooklyn

I've had this product for over two years. It's the same one that came in my macbook pro box. Just be sure to take good care of it and don't have it plugged into an outlet for too long because you'll just be draining the power on the battery. The whole product is very fragile and I'll admit that in the two years I've owned this, I've gotten wears and tears but nothing electrical tape can't fix. I only wish this wasn't so expensive because I'll need to buy a new one soon. $80 is a bit hefty..

    So far, So good

    • Written by from Tipp City

I have had my 13-in. MBPro since Sept of 2011. Thus far, my Magsafe power cord has lasted me, fine. Several months ago, I switched jobs and now I have to bring my Mac Book to work on most days. Because of this, I'm looking into getting an additional power cord (1 to leave at home with my dock, and 1 to take in my bag). I figure this, way I can keep one from the stress of unplugging too often (the one at home), and I'll have an extra.
I rated this at a 3 because I haven't had issues, but I know several friends who are on their 3rd cord or so. But I'm also thinking, for those on here who've said they've bought 7 or 10 of them. Why not buy 2 and leave one stationary (home) and take one mobile. At least that way, you know one of those cords wont be getting a lot of wear.
IMHO. BTW, the person who suggested having magsafe connector at both ends, brilliant idea!!

Cord works but casing becomes frayed

    • Written by from Windsor

For the most part the L-shaped adapter works perfectly, it's lasted me two years so far since it came with the Macbook, but what I've been having issue with is the casing around the cord. The power is still carried to the computer but the plastic casing around the actual cord (not the L part) constantly is breaking apart. Maybe next time use a sturdier material than flimsy plastic because I carry my power cord with me everywhere and it seems wrapping it up with the square portion of the power cord causes it to eventually break apart. I've got more masking tape on the cord than it came wrapped in. If you want to keep selling these things for $80, maybe make sure it doesn't break apart. Many people with MacBooks are university students or working professionals who carry their Macbooks with them, we need something that can handle travel.

    Recall please!!

    • Written by from Brownsville

They really need to make a recall. My charger still works after 3 years however, the rubber coating has begun to turn green and peel off the metal wires inside. I never travel with this computer so I haven't mistreated it. I now have electrical tape covering the exposed wires.

    60W MagSafe Usage Review

    • Written by from Palm Desert

I use Macbook Pro 13-inch 2008 Model. The first 2.5 years of using it, didn't face any problem. After 2.5 years, the jack of 60W MagSafe power adapter used to get extremely heated up while I used to do any powerful work(Photoshop & Illustrator) / or multiple work.
At a point I had to start shaking the charger port quite a few times to get the red light (charging) . As the port gets heated up, I thought the problem was may be with my laptop or its battery or the port. This problem continued for 7-8 months when suddenly 1 day it completely stopped working. No shaking could fix it. Then I went to an Apple store in my country and tested my mac with a new charger. So the problem was with the charger, and compared and found that , Due to extreme heating, one of the very small thick pin inside the charger jack melted down (now it cannot touch the Mac port and so the charger doesn't work any more.... ) .
Other users should be aware of this heating issue for which I posted this review. Still a proud Apple user :)

    Pro's and Con's

    • Written by from taylor

I have had a MacBook Air since November 2011. It is honestly the best thing I have ever purchased from apple. I understand that the battery isn't going to last long due to the size of the computer, but I still think apple did a great job. However, I haven't had a problem with my charger in the about 2 years I've had it until yesterday. It started deciding when it wanted to charge? I had it plugged in and it said not charging? Then overnight it just gave out.. during finals week.. I'm happy with the life expectancy I go out of it, however I am very very careful with my technology, meaning it is always kept safe, clean, and never touched by anyone other than myself. This has led me to keep apple products much much longer than normal users, so to me 2 years of just being plugged in at my desk isn't very good. The price is absolutely outrageous too. I have the 3 year apple care protection plan that I haven't used once, so today when I'm at my appointment I certainly hope they will replace it, if not they will certainly have one unhappy customer on there hands.

Better power cord but still needs improvement

    • Written by from Silverthorne

The newer Apple power adapter is better than the old style. With the reinforced "L" connection at the magnetic port on my MacPro, the cord lasted a bit longer than the old style ones that frequently frayed near attachment to the computer. BUT my power adapter cord just gave out by fraying at the other end near the power adapter bo, though it did last a year and a half. How about some reinforcement next time there, too?? I HATE paying $79 for a new cord - they should last longer, Apple!!!

    MagSafe Tip Not Sturdy

    • Written by from Denver

The MagSafe adapter for my 13 inch MacBook Pro (model 8,1, purchased 2011) lasted about 18 months before the rectangular metal ring at tip of cord came loose. Glued it but glue messed up the pins. Apple needs to fortify the tip better if it has not updated these adapters recently.

    In with the New!

    • Written by

Just before Christmas 2012, my MacBook Pro's original power cord & adapter had a "meltdown!" While a minor inconvenience, what with the holidays mere days away, I decided to forego replacing it before I left to spend Christmas with family, even though I'd be sans laptop during my train rides to and from Chatham. This week [Jan 6 - 12], I "bought the 'bullet'," and bought a new cord and adapter from a local Apple resale location, and actually saved a few dollars too! I live in hope that this one will last longer than 3.5 years!

    Lasted five years

    • Written by from Las Vegas

Compared to my horrible Dell chargers this Apple product is wonderful . However, the cord finally wore out tonight. It could have lasted longer with some inexpensive strengthening right at the electro-magnetic connector. Not as bad as cables for the iPhone that always break within months. The mystery continues. Why so cheap, Apple?

    Love These Cords

    • Written by from Nepean

Ok i have read some reviews on this site for this product and i have to say this is a brilliant design choice made by apple! when I got my laptop i was shocked that it was going to be connected via magnet and thought that that was amazing! my cord from my 2008 (thats more 4 Years old) laptop just stopped working today and i have to buy a new one and im going to obviously get this one!

For the person who spent $500 dollars on new cords for there macbook maybe you should learn how to take care of your nice things that you buy for yourself or buy those laptop that you insert the charger for and see how fast they break! think about it you can save some money here dont backhand apple for you not being able to kept your cords in good condition!

I love the cord and attachment system keep it up apple little pricy but i guess we are just paying for the name.

Though the cord can be touch and go sometimes, it usually last me until my husky gives it one small bite, and its a goner. Buying my 3rd cord tomorrow. Sad day.

    Good but overpriced

    • Written by from Bryan

I have had my MacBook Pro 13" for over 3 years and the power adapter is just now starting to malfunction. Although I am disappointed with the price, mine did seem to last longer than a lot of the other reviews that I have read on here. I'm hoping that since it's been 3 years they've made improvements to it. But, I agree that Apple needs to lower the price!!!! I was shocked when I saw how much it costs to replace it.
