Nice concept, has issues, not ideal

I got the iPhone 4 bumper on the day of launch and used it since launch until last week (so for few months). Here are my thoughts:

    PROS -
    * Cool concept - Works well for people who want a light weight cover/safety yet not carry the bulk. Truly Apple style design.
    * Build - The body is firm, not flimsy. The rubber edge is like magnet, they will keep your phone still in any place, works great, I left it on the treadmill or car dash and it never moved. The rubber is soft, which gives it some protection in case the phone falls on a hard surface. By design the back is exposed but that is not an issue, it is a choice. The fit is perfect, you can slip it on or off easily, though I rarely did it (wish I did it sooner, keep reading). The rest of build has many issues covered under CONS.
    * Buttons - The buttons feels great, you won't miss using the iPhone buttons. Getting to ringer button can be bit tough, not an issue though.
    * Reception - Bumper or any cover is supposed to insulate the antenna shorting and avoid the iPhone 4 issue. It did as claimed but once I stopped using it, I noticed a different behavior, covered under CONS.

    CONS -
    * Reception - So you would think that bumper will help with iPhone 4 antenna issue. Well, it did. My bars did not drop as it would otherwise. However, once I stopped using it (replaced it with ghost sticky skin), I noticed a significant improvement in my WiFi signal strength. This makes me wonder if it interfered with my WiFi antenna. Anyways, just an observation that I wanted to share here.
    * Build - After a few months of use, I took off the bumper and found that the Inner lining had badly scratched the metal edges/antenna of the phone. Phone's power button and the metal body is scratched from all sides. This is a quality failure. The lining is supposed to protect the phone body, not harm it. It has cheap plastic (or something similar) inside that does more harm than good ! Unfortunately, its too late for me, my phone is scratched in only the areas that was protected by the bumper (irony ?).
    * Holes for ports - If you live in Apple world then this bumper is for you. But if you plan to use non-Apply headphones or USB connector (in car or otherwise), you are out of luck. The bumper holes are precisely built to fit the small apple connectors or similar (rare to find), nothing else would fit. Yet another reason why I dumped the bumper.

CONCLUSION - Cool concept, good fit, nice from outside, cheap harmful material inside, limits use of 3rd party headphones/adapters. Cons weigh more than Pros for me and I no longer am using it.

    Good case but ironic

When I got this case I was really excited to protect it and show it off. After 3 months of use I hsve noticed it has been scratching my phone's stainless steel bumper. There are nor scratches all over my phone from an apple product that was supposed to protect it.

    Good, but requires modification

The bumper is a good case for what it's meant for. It offers no screen or back glass protection at all. The problem is the connectors. The dock connector port is a perfect fit for the apple dock connectors. However, if you have any accessory or 3rd party cables, this is where it becomes an issue. The ipod adapter in my car wouldn't work. Even an older apple branded ipod cable doesn't fit with the bumper on.

Solution: I used a Dremmel to make the dock connector much more accommodating to other cables.

Longer term solution: bought another case.

LOVE THE BUMPER - ignore negative reviews

I never write reviews but i thought i would chime in about this one.

Obviously this case doesn't protect the back ... if you buy this and then complain about this feature you are an idiot.

Things i love about the bumper:
    1. minimalistic
    2. rubber edges - phone wont slide around. Especially useful in the car or on a smooth surface
    3. iPhone will ever touch the surface because both sides and all edges are raised
    4. buttons are classy and not recessed like other cases
    4. fits perfectly

    Things i dont like:
    1. Expensive - If this were $10 like it should be, you could buy a few colors
    2. Recessed vibrate switch is hard to get to

Comparisons to other cases i have:
Incase slider - Scratches the glass when you slide on and off. Lint gathers around edges. Bulky.
Incase snap - Piece of garbage. Will crack and hardly protects anything. Save your money.

Overall i think this is the best case you can buy. Sure, its not going to protect your phone if you drop it while bear hunting in the forest; however, for everyday use it doesnt get any better.

Brilliant design - complaints seem mistaken

Everyone agrees that the iPhone Bumper is well-made, leaves all functions accessible, makes the phone more comfortable to hold, helps it stay put on inclined surfaces especially, etc, but there are also some complaints that make no sense to me:

[Complaint 1] No protection for the glass face and back. The raised rubber edge actually provides excellent protection to the entire device, including front and back, against impacts with flat surfaces - desks, floors, etc - which would seem to be the main hazard. It's no help at all, of course, if you smack the glass against a small convex object (a car's bumper, similarly, is no help, eg, if you drive into a truck's lowered tailgate). Lots of protection with a very small footprint, I think.

[Complaint 2] The bumper scratches the antenna-frame. After more than a year, there are no scratches on the frame of my iPhone, and I don't how there could be: stainless steel is very tough, and could not be scratched by plastic. If some sand-like abrasive were caught under the bumper the frame might get scratched, but if you blame this on the bumper, then you should also credit the bumper with protecting the screen form trapped sand, because it doesn't cover the screen!

    Lock Button Problems

I had the original iPhone 4 bumper that was given free by Apple. That bumper was fantastic and lasted me until last week so I thought I would replace it.

The new version of the bumper is terrible as the fit of the lock-button is too tight and is constantly locking the phone or trying to turn it off.

I cannot recommended this new version of the bumper and it is sad to see Apple put something out that has obviously not been tested. Steve would not be happy....

    Nice Design

I'm very happy with this case. I received this case for free through the iPhone 4 case program. I had wanted to give it a try but was on the fence for $29. I went for it with the free case program. I purchased a protective film for the front and back of the phone from Power Support (my go to company for all of my iPhone screen protectors) since the case leaves both the front and back exposed. I ended up dropping my phone recently about 4 feet to the concrete and it bounced under a parked car. I picked up the phone and not a scratch was on it (the part of the case that seemed to take the brunt of the impact did look like something chewed on it). When the cases went on sale again after the free program ended I happily purchased 2 more in white and blue. Be advised that not all third party headphones and dock accessories are compatible with the case.

    scuffed the brushed metal

I loved the design of the case. The black looked great on my device.

Sadly it ripped in just a few weeks and was no longer usable. It started tearing where the plastic met the rubber.

To make matters worse, it scuffed the metal sides all around the phone. This coming from a case made by Apple? Hmm. I own a smart cover for iPad and it works great so I'm just a little disappointed. That's all.

    don't recommend

I used this case since i got the phone. I've been pretty happy wit the case, I actually liked the case. but when i went to take it off to use the phone with out a case i noticed that this case severely scratched my phones sides. I was pretty upset because this was suppose to protect it and it scratched it. And for thirty dollars the rubber splits from the plastic within several months of use. So please don't make the mistake i made avoid this product.

    Look nice but no dice

Listen to me very closely do not buy this case. I got it for free from apple to prevent the death grip. I got the 32 gig. I wanted to protect it and at the same time have something stylish. Who knows the phone better than apple? Answer: apple. I put the bumper on my phone and it looked very nice and stylish. Just what I wanted. Well the nightmare started 7 months later when I removed the bumper. My phone was ruined the whole stainless steel antenna had some type of scratches or imperfection it didn't look pretty at all. I called apple they scheduled me an appointment with genius bar. On Mac forum it states that apple will replace the unit. I am crossing my fingers. My wife and I both got the phones at the same time. Her phone looks just like new. She was smart. She got the bumper but never put it on. The bumper should be removed from the shelves. Don't buy it. You will be sorry. Don't take it even if it's for FREE!!!

    Best cover so far.

About 3 months ago I purchased this bumper in black and really like it so far. I especially like how well it sticks to all surfaces and has prevented dropping it many times. I, too, believe that this item is over priced. The only disappointment is that in order to use my iphone in the car I have to peel back the corner of the bumper where the auxilliary cable enters the iphone because the bumper is too thick to make contact. It's annoying and I'm concerned that having to do this will either stretch or break the bumper. I don't seem to have the other issues that other users have had with this bumper.

    Design flaw

This bumper is the slimmest and the nicest looking bumper but each time you have to plug in to recharge or sync you have to take it off, because it does not allow the plug to lock in fully and it comes off enough to disconnect it due to the thickness. Taking it off everytime you recharge which is every day, the rubber eventually rips.

    Nice

First off, why do people say it scratches the side of their phone? get real folks, the side of your phone is metal, the case is plastic and rubber. Obviously a grain of sand or some other hard substance worked it's way between the phone and the case. This would happen with just about any other case.

I've had my case since day one, over six months now and yes, it's worn and breaking down, but so is the slip case I put my phone into, leather. Already purchased a replacement slip case and now it's time to replace this bumper as well. Since I've owned a PDA of some type since 2000 (Palm). I've always had to replace my cases between 3 and 6 months, you can't expect cases, which you buy to protect your phone, to last very long, they are meant to take the punishment so your phone lasts.

The case works well as I slide my phone into a leather slip case to carry on a belt instead of in a pocket. The slick surface combined with the sticky rubber allows it to slide into the case, but also grippy enough where it doesn't slip out of my hands during use.

    great case

I really liked this case, it saved my phone many times I have dropped my phone face down on concrete as well as in the street and my screen was unharmed. This case also hhelps with the AT&T iPhone 4 Untennae problem.

    Case disintegrating

I love the case but after a few months use I saw the right upper side of the cases' rubber peeling off. If I rub it with my finger it peels off the rubber. I can also just take large chunks off the rubber with ease. It looks like it is disintegrating somehow.

The Truth about the Bumper, Nothing is New Forever

I've owned my iPhone 4 and decided on the Bumper at the same time. It was free due to the issue of the antenna not functioning properly, Apple was offering the Bumper or $30 credit for a case. Having been a iPhone 3G owner for 2 years before getting the 4, I had the protector screen and rubber/plastic case. it survived well but was bulky.
Now the advantage of the bumper, even though it does fall apart, I'm here to replace mine as the rubber has ripped around the power cord about 3-4 months ago and has now started shredding around all the sides and the phone no longer sits safely in the Bumper, again back to the advantage of the bumper, is that it maximizes the protection of the phone with the minimal of intrusion to working the phone. It's very light weight. Is raised rubber edges allow the phone to not come into direct contact with a surface. Because of the minimalist design, it feels like its how the phone should have been manufactured.
Come on people, the iPhone is a smartphone. It's a tool. It's what you carry with you like your wallet and keys. Do you ever look at how much wear and tear those items take - so expect your phone to take some punishment too, but it's also well constructed to take that abuse. The bumper protects the places it needs it the most...it's edges. Plain a simple. But the best part is, the Bumper leaves the phone as naked as possible so you can touch its sexy smooth screen and back that are incredibly scratch resistant.
Last of all, i decided long ago to test the screen by not using a protector and has survived well. I am conscious of generally not putting the phone in my pocket with keys, coins or other metal objects, but i don't baby the phone either.
Is the Bumper overpriced - Yes, but isn't everything that Apple sells - but we will still buy it - because it works the best.

    Not really a point

First of all, the bumper doesn't protect the front or back glass, but it's not really advertised to do that, so no big deal. It does help if you drop it, since it will land on the bumper and not the edge of the phone.

That said, the the only part it does cover is the metal around the sides, but the bumper itself scratches the metal. Dust gets in there and makes rub marks on your metal rim due to the bumper after just a few months. So basically, the case doesn't protect the glass, and damages the only part of the phone that it covers.

Finally, after about four months, the rubber on the bottom below the home button has split and is slowly peeling away from the plastic inner part of the bumper, so this thing is not incredibly durable.

Why this 3 cent piece of rubber and plastic costs $29 is a mystery, as is what value it truly serves.

    Great look and handle but...

I used this case for a year on my iPhone 4, carried in my pocket.

The look is awesome but the case permanently scratched the metal band surrounding the phone, as well as the volume and sleep buttons. I always carried the phone in a very clean pocket so the matter remains in the bumper itself.

Apple needs to put a thin later of silicon or something around the entire inside of the case.

    Does what it does

I got this case Aug 2010 as part of the free case program. Nothing fancy, but a regular, ordinary looking bumper. Also, I wasn't very concerned about the lack of back coverage, since I got the Power Support film set.

    PROS:
Despite making the iPhone look 'uglier', this bumper really does its job. I dropped my phone about 7x already and it's just fine. Mind you, the drops were only 2-3 ft drops, so I can't attest to whether the bumper can withstand higher drops, but seven times! There are numerous scratches on my bumper, especially at the corners because of the drops, but the phone itself is fine. Other reviews said the rubber part already started cracking and peeling after light use, but I've had this for a year and it's only started recently. I don't exactly take very good care of my phone or other electronics, so it's very surprising that my bumper has lasted this long while others (who do take care of their phones) complain the bumper isn't long-lasting.

    CONS:
This bumper isn't perfect, however, as dust does tend to accumulate near the edges, but since I have Power Support film set on, this isn't a big deal. Just make sure to take the bumper off to clean the phone from time to time. Now...the MAJOR defect of this bumper, like many reviews have stated, is that this bumper SCRATCHES THE PHONE! It didn't for the first few months of use, but now I see black smudges and marks that won't come off on the silver band of the phone. They're noticeable, especially around the ring/vibrate button, the power button, the volume buttons, and the charger jack and speakers on the bottom. It's very disappointing that the bumper would do this and I hope Apple will do something about it (not very likely though).

    RECOMMENDATION:
Based on my experience, yes I would recommend this bumper to iPhone users because it offers fairly heavy-duty protection for such a minimal case. If you're someone who drops their phone a lot, but don't want any scratches on their phone, then I suggest the Otterbox; but if you're someone (like me) who drops their phone and don't want a big fat ugly Otterbox case covering your phone, this is good enough. This bumper has lasted me a year and I'm ready to buy a new one--green this time!
