    Tiny fonts on menus.. no Hi-DPI mode

    For some reason, Apple is under the impression that users should be about 6 inches away from this monitor.. the menus are rendered smaller than on my Dell 20" monitor, which makes them impossible to see from a reasonable distance. There is no Hi-DPI mode on this monitor, which is what even Microsoft has on their terrible operating system.

    If you value your eyes (and sanity.. and money).. do not buy this monitor under any circumstances. I am a devout Apple fan, but I am not sure what Apple was thinking with this one. Right now, I am running this monitor in 1/2 resolution, just to be able to see.. which makes things super-blurry. A total waste of my money.

    Avoid

    I'm on my second display after I received a lemon the first time around that started going black within the first month. The new display is still full of problems. The speakers and video do not link up to my Mac Pro and more recently it does not wake up from sleep unless I unplug the display. It is a nightmare, particularly considering the premium price. After 2 years I'm thinking of trying to give it to a computer lab on campus and replacing it with a cheaper 24in screen (as I don't have the budget to buy a second high end screen in such a short period of time). Trying punching "Thunderbolt Display worst" into a search engine and you'll see that I'm not the only one with major problems.

    LEMON: Avoid

    I just wanted to share my Thunderbolt story.

    Here is a brief timeline as I'm loosing the will to live at this point.:

    Purchased monitor then after a year (just outside warranty) the monitor decided to not wake up.

    Took it to Apple store where they replaced the Magsafe/Thunderbolt cable. ($350)

    A few months after that it started doing the same thing again.

    Took it back to the Apple store where they replaced the main controller...didn't fix the issue.

    Was informed it would need the main panel replacing at an eye watering ($1200 plus tax)

    Instructed by Apple to take it to another store for a 2nd opinion.

    Same result, was instructed by the store to call Apple Care as they agreed it was 'a bit of a lemon'.

    Apple Care essentially said they could offer a discount on the repair but it would still be just under a $1000.

    So after at least 6 (out of the way) visits to two different stores and countless phone calls, I'm left with investing over $2500 into a monitor which, I'm not willing to do.

    Cost of monitor + repair + repair = $TOO MUCH


    The reason I paid out the money for an expensive monitor was that I wanted something reliable and durable. Neither of these things was achieved and to 'rub salt into the wound' I was politely told by Apple it was just tough luck.


    I have invested heavily in the Apple ecosystem and feel very let down. I'm contemplating shifting my money elsewhere.

    Beautiful display, but REALLY shoddy built-in cables will fail

    The thunderbolt cable is built into the display. Great and all, except for the fact that it goes bad after moderate use with a laptop. I don't know what it is about Apple and cables, but – like iPhone cables – the cable is NOT tolerant bending from normal use. After awhile the screen will flicker until the point of it not working at all. Google "thunderbolt display 27" cable failing" for more info.

    My first one failed. Replaced it, and now the replacement is failing.

    do not buy this display

    I've had this display for 1.5 years. I planned on using with my Macbook Pro and mac mini

    Let me tell you how awful it's been:
    -when it goes to sleep it doesn't wake up. to reset it i have to unplug the power supply and wait 15 minutes to overnight...the time varies.
    -if you use any usb device (superdrive, iPhone iPad chargers) it causes the display to go to black and again requires a reset.
    -I cannot use it at all with my laptop. simply connecting the thunderbolt and power cables to the display does not enable it to turn on. I have not figured out a way around this issue.
    -The only way i can get it to work now is by doing a fresh restart each morning on my mac mini, and turning off sleep and screensavers. I shut down the computer every time I use it and that seems to help.

    -Unfortunately I didn't purchase applecare for the unit. I have thought about calling up applecare anyway because my computer is under applecare.
    -No update from apple has fixed this issue.

    Noisy noisy noisy...

    The worst Apple product I've ever bought!
    If you plug the thunderbolt cable in a Macbook or anything else the display's loudspeakers start giving a horrible static noise. It's not that loud, but it's definitely hearable if you've placed the display in a calm room.
    Do you doubt? Just google "Thunderbolt Display Noise Speakers"...
    That's not a technical failure of the display I bought, it's one of the characteristics of this product. But Apple won't tell you before you haven't bought it!

    The most painful monitors I have ever used.

    I don't know why people rave about the Thunderbolt displays. They are so shiny and reflective as to be virtually unusable in a room with any ambient light. Just plain awful.

    TERRIBLE!

    The power supply has failed TWICE already on this screen and now the LCD itself has also gone bad. I took it ti the ishop to be repaired for the second time and naturally now it is out of warranty so they wanted almost $2000 to repair a screen that I can buy new for $999!! Totally ridiculous and unreliable.

    The ATD 27" is the worst apple product I have owned ever! Very limited connectivity options, no backward compatibility, and it simply is unpredictable when it works. Wont wake up from sleep, display goes blank. Does not play nice with Yosemite! I can go on and on and on. I have dumped it for now and have switched to competing brand and that thing works!

    I was assigned a thunderbolt display at work. I was so excited. But the minute I started using it, I realized a huge problem with it, kind of a deal breaker: it reflects almost everything. I am a programmer, and I like to program with a dark background in my editor. Now with this horrible reflection, I cannot see my staff clearly. All I can see is the shadow of whatever behind me. It is a good tool to tell whether your boss is coming behind you, but not a good display monitor, at least for programming.

    USB 2.0 Ports

    Come on Apple can't you upgrade this product to the current USB 3.0 standard. What's the point of using this display as a thunderbolt dock if the built in USB ports don't take advantage of the newer faster USB standard. This is a very expensive piece of kit and it needs an upgrade.

    It is not a reliable monitor

    I own this monitor for two month and three weeks. While it works with my late 2011 13" Macbook pro for two months 2 weeks and till the time I hook up this monitor on late 2012 mac mini for boot camp set up the trouble began. It turn off my mac mini and monitor without any warning. First I suspect the mac mini has problem. then my brother brought his mac mini and ask me to set the boot camp for him and same thing happen. I spent hours to fight this issue and suspect the mac mini is the one to blame. But finally I hook up my brother 's mac mini to my HP 27 monitor and it stay stable till I finished the boot camp. And later I hook up my macbook pro again and the monitor turn off while my macbook pro screen still on and now I know the monitor is in trouble.

    Does Not Work on Macbook Air

    I seriously think there is a design flaw in this monitor. The monitor charges my Macbook Air, the USB ports in the back charge my iPhone. Unfortunately, the monitor itself only displays a black screen. The thunderbolt cable gets very warm when I plug it into my MB Air but nothing happens on the monitor. I have already spent a significant amount of time online researching this issue and tried to identify a fix. I strongly encourage you to do the same before you buy this product. I did everything that Apple recommended like upgrade firmware, iOS, etc. to no avail. Now the daunting task of trying to work with Apple to resolve. This purchase has cost me more time than I have bandwidth.

    REFLECTIONS!?!?!?! Is this a joke?

    Most beautiful design, Solid, BEST connections with my macbookPRO. But I can ONLY ONLY ONLY work with it inside a dark cave or in the evenings. Working on this monitor is like working on top of a new Audi.

    What´s the point of making such a beautiful piece of monitor if we cannot work on it during day time?

    I spent 60$ on a MATTE antiglare filter. Final result: TERRIBLE blurry image and waist of 2 hours.

    I need to return this product, I´m afraid. I really hope you guys are thinking on matte screens, at list for professionals that also work during day time.

    If you work for the design/photography industry this monitor is not for you at all. That glossy end will reflect everything around you. Impossible to calibrate and generate ICC profiles properly. It is quite bad even to watch movies. Apple forgot about professionals again as usual from the last 15 years. Big shame. Honestly, you'll waste your money if you buy this monitor. Check out competitors and you will see you can get something much much better for same price.

    Bought it, lasted 2 days, then it went dark

    I was very excited when I bought it, even if it's overpriced 1000 EUR it's a lot of money for a monitor...either way I've used it for 2 days then it won't turn on...I have another old monitor (that means that my lightning port works since I am using it for this monitor as I type) I've tried a normal laptop (hdmi-lightning adaptor) still nothing...the usb keyboard plug into the monitor doesn't work (I've thought that the brightness button is going wild...or I dunn' no)

    Anyway...picture this, paying lots of money, lasting 2 days now I have to send it back...couldn't find a solution to make it work...I've google through forums tried everything nothing work :(

    I'd say never buy this display!

    A killer on your eyes

    Luckily, I was able to cut my working hours down to 1/3 of what they used to be around the time I got this monitor. Even with reduced hours, this monitor has been the cause of massive head, neck and eye pain for the last year. I recommend finding a different monitor and sacrifice the thunderbolt convenience.

    Beautiful when it works--veeery annoying when it doesn't

    I bought my TBD to serve as a quasi dock for my 13" MBP so I can plug in my USB keyboard, external hard drives, and sundry peripherals. Everything looks fantastic on the display; and not having to disconnect all the connected devices, including the ethernet cable, is a real convenience. But unfortunately, there is the flicker/blackout issue. Search for something along the lines of "Thunderbolt goes dark" and you will get a plethora of hits linking to Apple forums and other boards that others have posted about their TBD issues. Namely that, seemingly at random the screen may or may not flicker before going dark. If you are using the integrated ethernet and ports, you will disconnect and have to unplug/replug your TBD cable. I've tried several workarounds and have even gone to the Apple store to have the display serviced, but I'm still running into this issue. Forget about waking your computer up when connected to the TBD--your connected computer may wake up, but the display won't and you'll have to unplug/replug. Now, this is very annoying in and of itself, but my anger is compounded by the fact that it costs about $1K. I could have a top-of-the-line PC display for that and still have enough for a TB hub. At any rate, that's my experience with the TBD, which seems to be not exactly typical, but exactly rare, either. You've been warned.

    Do not buy this screen

    I bought this screen two weeks ago, sinds then i had nothing but problems. There is a large amount of backlight bleeding. But that is not the worst part.
    The screen simply doesn't work. it turns black when i'm editing it won't wake when my mac pro wakes. And now it won't turn on at all. I've retuned my first fault one and got a new one frome the retailer. But its all the same problems.
    Apple is just very poor built quality. I've recently purchased a new mac pro as well and its all problems whit that to.

    I used to be a big fan of apple, but they lost me. I'm never buying your overpriced things ever again.
