    Dead after one week

    I'm really unhappy with this purchase. My monitor died this morning after only one week. It's now at the Apple Store being repaired. Not really the way you want a $1000 monitor purchase to go. Very unsatisfied customer.

    I'm on my second display after I received a lemon the first time around that started going black within the first month. The new display is still full of problems. The speakers and video do not link up to my Mac Pro and more recently it does not wake up from sleep unless I unplug the display. It is a nightmare, particularly considering the premium price. After 2 years I'm thinking of trying to give it to a computer lab on campus and replacing it with a cheaper 24in screen (as I don't have the budget to buy a second high end screen in such a short period of time). Trying punching "Thunderbolt Display worst" into a search engine and you'll see that I'm not the only one with major problems.

    Wish I Could Return it

    Worst monitor I've ever used for photo editing. The stories you read about the monitor hurting users' eyes are true. I bought a 27" iMac and would return it tomorrow if I could. On top of the monitor's usability problems, with the new iMac, there is no video in. Apparently, Apple wants to sell you everything you view on the iMac. Do not buy this monitor.

    do not buy this display

    I've had this display for 1.5 years. I planned on using with my Macbook Pro and mac mini

    Let me tell you how awful it's been:
    -when it goes to sleep it doesn't wake up. to reset it i have to unplug the power supply and wait 15 minutes to overnight...the time varies.
    -if you use any usb device (superdrive, iPhone iPad chargers) it causes the display to go to black and again requires a reset.
    -I cannot use it at all with my laptop. simply connecting the thunderbolt and power cables to the display does not enable it to turn on. I have not figured out a way around this issue.
    -The only way i can get it to work now is by doing a fresh restart each morning on my mac mini, and turning off sleep and screensavers. I shut down the computer every time I use it and that seems to help.

    -Unfortunately I didn't purchase applecare for the unit. I have thought about calling up applecare anyway because my computer is under applecare.
    -No update from apple has fixed this issue.

    TBD Random Crashes / MBP Retina

    If you intend to use this as designed, with a brand new mb pro retina with 16gb of ram. You will indeed have issues. That seems to be the pattern on the Internet of people with this display and issues.

    It could also be an osx 10.8.2 thing.

    Either way. Right now this display will blackout at least once every 2-3 hours.

    11 years of owning and running macs for work, first unsolvable issue I've ran into with the hardware.

    Is Apple Joking?

    I had nothing but problems with this display for two days. I ended up returning it. The screen flickered in and out, and it wouldn't switch properly when resuming from sleep mode. The USB and network ports also wouldn't work. I have a brand new MacBook Pro 17" and it has worked fine with other monitors. For $1,000, you'd think apple would test this before they released it. What a joke.

    The Truth About This Display...

    I have to own something for at least 1 year before I'll do a review of it. I've owned an Apple product of some sort since 1985. I currently have 8 Apple products working in my home at the present time. I am a 47 year old male who owns a marketing firm in Seattle.

    I point out the above to give perspective. A lot of times when I read a review I like to know a little about the person's situation because, really...who are they? Why should I listen to them?
    With that said I need to point out quickly that I read all the negative reviews (all 88 at this writing) and it seems a bit curious to me that most of them share the same personality. In other words, it doesn't seem to me they are all that truthful. It's amazing to me that a product can have 1000's of people really like it but a few don't? Usually it's the person, not the product, when it comes down to brass tacks.

    I own 7 of the Thunderbolt Displays and have yet to have any issues with any of them. All my employees use various MacBooks to fire any number of them up and mine in my office has a Mac Mini attached to it. Made my purchases in December of 2013 and have been very happy with the final product. Beautiful all the way 'round.
    Now I will say my only wish is for there to be at least one USB port located on the bottom or side. Yes, I understand, Apple likes a smooth well-defined look about their products and I appreciate that. However, I use it to charge a lot of items and it'd just be more convenient.

    Overall, I dig the product.

    Great Display

    I am now on my third month with my display. I use it as my hub. I use it with my new MacBook Pro with the retina display. It's great!! I have a keyboard, 2 mice (mouse?), what ever, a super drive, and another powered USB hub. I will be getting a Thunderbolt external drive (DROBO) and for now that's about it. I connect and un connect my MacBook Pro several times a day. I do not have any problems with the display and everything connected works great. I can't wait for a retina 27" Thunderbolt display. That way I can give this one to my wife and get the new display for me, haha, like that will happen. Anyway I love this display and I think Apple did a great job!!

    Unusable due to reflections and glare

    This display wasn't compatible with my windows, and I'm not referring to a Microsoft product. The windows were across the room to left of the display not directly behind it. There was a large roll-top desk between the windows and this display to provide some shade. Until I closed the blinds, every solid color on the screen showed bright reflections. The solid blacks of my terminal window backgrounds reflected like a mirror.

    I could only reduce the glare enough by closing the blinds and turning the brightness up to two bars below maximum. That was too bright to be comfortable for regular use, and besides I should be able to see outside and see what's on the screen at the same time.

    Apple needs to invest some its profits into display R & D. The matte displays sold a few years ago look far better than this display. If people require the vivid colors, Apple must find a way to offer the color without this much glare.

    Sharp display, but unacceptable glare/reflection.

    First let me say it really is a beautiful display, the thing is very sharp and colors are noticeably more rich than other LCDs. However, there's just way too much glare even in a moderately lit office environment to use it comfortably for long periods of time. After just a couple of hours of looking at it, my eyes get sore and I have headaches by the end of the day.

    I tried a 3M privacy/anti-glare filter, which quickly eliminated the eye strain and headaches, but it makes the display look absolutely horrible, worse than some bargain bin LCD. The screen is just too big for a filter; while looking at the center of the screen, several inches of the edges are blurred without moving my head.

    Also I've had problems with the Ethernet over Thunderbolt to my MBP that others have reported in forums. I connect/disconnect my laptop several times a day for meetings and eventually the MBP doesn't see Ethernet link anymore unless I reboot (some device enumeration issue?).

    I really want to like this display. I understand the color and sharpness may be a function of the glass, but there needs to be a better medium. What's the point of a great display if you can't look at it?

    It's mostly good...

    The display is amazing! Graphics are unbelievable crisp, the colors are awesome!

    The glare issue is pretty bad... you really need to be strategic where you place it to avoid reflection... also it can be pretty intense sitting too close to it all day... need a good 2' deep desk to really be at a comfortable distance.

    Apple price but definitely not Apple quality

    In order to put this review in prospective, you need to know that I have been a loyal Apple customer for many years. The quality of their products are second to none. But in the case of the Thunderbolt Display, Apple has clearly lowered its quality standard.

    Despite some hesitations after reading some recurrent reviews on reliability issues, I have purchased the Thunderbolt Display in April 2015.
    In August, I had the 661-6048 power supply replaced due to a constant and annoying buzzing noise it was making. Now, I have to bring it again to repair because it won't turn on: it's powered but the screen remains desperately black.

    Yes it's beautiful but that's pretty much it. Apple price but definitely not Apple quality.
    I am not recommending this product.

    USB 2.0 Ports

    Come on Apple can't you upgrade this product to the current USB 3.0 standard. What's the point of using this display as a thunderbolt dock if the built in USB ports don't take advantage of the newer faster USB standard. This is a very expensive piece of kit and it needs an upgrade.

    Just got this display in a new company, one for the office, one for home. After a few days have some thoughts...

    Working on it is awesome, colors are bright, everything is sharp, etc. Unless it's exposed to the daylight :( It's sooo glossy. I've heard there's a new model coming better in that respect, but this one is GLOSSY! This makes working on it really hard at times.

    Another thing is connectivity. Can't connect my older MacBook Pro, just because it doesn't have a Thunderbolt display? No HDMI, so can't connect my Apple TV? No AirPlay? I mean, for a $999 device, it's crazy - only one form of input?

    Additional ports are quite handy, but somehow, whenever my Retina MacBook goes to sleep (in clamshell mode), the keyboard stops responding. Have to reconnect the cable in the back - somewhat annoying, but can't be 100% sure if it's the display or something else.

    Wish Apple tried harder - this could be awesome.

    Love the display, but issues with USB and ethernet

    Great display, love it. The reason I decided on this display was the ease of connecting all my devices at my desk to the back. I.e. like a docking station concept. However....
    When the display goes to sleep (while I sleep), I loose USB and ethernet when it wakes up. There are many users with this problem, so some patience might be required if you plan to use the ports on the back! I am going to call Apple Support, etc...

    So, 5 starts for style and quality of the display, and 1 start for stability of the connected devices. I'll rate this in the middle.

    As of the new 10.7.4 update which included a fix to thunderbolt, this monitor now works perfectly for me. Wakes up out of sleep everytime....just fantastic.

    less than 60 days two die

    I too have had a thunderbolt 27″ fail, in fact two of them. The first one was less than 60 days old. Smack dab in the middle it had subpixels fail with a line running vertically and horizontally and everything below the horizontal line was flickering really bad. Made an appointment with the gunnies bar and ended up with an exchange for a band new unit. I felt really good about how well they handled it. However, in less than one week the second monitor from the exchange died! This time no video, however, the display sound, ethernet, and other ports still worked. Again, made an appointment with genius bar. This time they didn’t even remove the monitor form the box to look at it. They just took my word and brought back another brand new monitor. I’m now on my second day on the third monitor and continuously have my fingers crossed. Yes, apple support was excellent and kodos to my local genus bar, but the reality is I’d just would like a monitor that works!

    Needs a less glossy screen and a few more features to be work $1,000

    My brother works for Apple, so I am a long time Apple fan, with that said I have a few issues with this monitor. First off, I love the monitor and am glad I bought it! I am docking my 13" MBP to it and I absolutely love the setup! I wish the screen was less glossy, it is noticeable. I also with it had it's own audio in/out and it's own dedicated power button. I like to power my Macbook Pro off when I am not home but in order to turn it back on I have to take it out of the stand I bought for it, open up the clamshell and actually turn it on. If it had these features it would be well worth $1,000, without it's worth about $800. Sorry Apple, just being honest. :(

    nice product if it lasts

    Approximately 18 months after purchasing, the power supply and cord for one of my two Thunderbolt displays had to be replaced ($173). Three months later (now), the display failed; estimated replacement cost is over $800. If you buy this display, don't make my mistake--pay even more for the extended warranty.

    A $1,000.00 shiny dust magnet. I'll be shipping this lead weight back and sticking with my old 23' Wide Screen Cinema display. Its a shame apple stopped making them. The picture quality is comparable, the screen is a matte finish, and dust/glare is never a problem. Oh sure it isn't as pretty and all, but when the heck did apple think that looks should be substituted for functionality? I guess thats a silly question. Look elsewhere in my opinion unless you prefer a side order of glare with your glare.
