    Apple price but definitely not Apple quality

    In order to put this review in prospective, you need to know that I have been a loyal Apple customer for many years. The quality of their products are second to none. But in the case of the Thunderbolt Display, Apple has clearly lowered its quality standard.

    Despite some hesitations after reading some recurrent reviews on reliability issues, I have purchased the Thunderbolt Display in April 2015.
    In August, I had the 661-6048 power supply replaced due to a constant and annoying buzzing noise it was making. Now, I have to bring it again to repair because it won't turn on: it's powered but the screen remains desperately black.

    Yes it's beautiful but that's pretty much it. Apple price but definitely not Apple quality.
    I am not recommending this product.

    Good Overall

    Brilliant display quality and no issues with any part of it - all works very well for most situations. However, if you are using a Mac Mini, the graphics (Intel HD 4000) aren't suitable for high-end gaming, due to the Mini having no graphics card of its own.

    Simply beautiful

    I've had mine about a year, and I think it's fantastic. Beautiful, beautiful image. No flickering, no sign of bad cables. I use it with a laptop. Menu size just fine. Takes a little getting used to all that real estate at the edges, but i'm glad it's there. And, at this point, Apple should be selling a 4K (or 5K) version.

    Tiny fonts on menus.. no Hi-DPI mode

    For some reason, Apple is under the impression that users should be about 6 inches away from this monitor.. the menus are rendered smaller than on my Dell 20" monitor, which makes them impossible to see from a reasonable distance. There is no Hi-DPI mode on this monitor, which is what even Microsoft has on their terrible operating system.

    If you value your eyes (and sanity.. and money).. do not buy this monitor under any circumstances. I am a devout Apple fan, but I am not sure what Apple was thinking with this one. Right now, I am running this monitor in 1/2 resolution, just to be able to see.. which makes things super-blurry. A total waste of my money.

    I'm on my second display after I received a lemon the first time around that started going black within the first month. The new display is still full of problems. The speakers and video do not link up to my Mac Pro and more recently it does not wake up from sleep unless I unplug the display. It is a nightmare, particularly considering the premium price. After 2 years I'm thinking of trying to give it to a computer lab on campus and replacing it with a cheaper 24in screen (as I don't have the budget to buy a second high end screen in such a short period of time). Trying punching "Thunderbolt Display worst" into a search engine and you'll see that I'm not the only one with major problems.

    LEMON: Avoid

    I just wanted to share my Thunderbolt story.

    Here is a brief timeline as I'm loosing the will to live at this point.:

    Purchased monitor then after a year (just outside warranty) the monitor decided to not wake up.

    Took it to Apple store where they replaced the Magsafe/Thunderbolt cable. ($350)

    A few months after that it started doing the same thing again.

    Took it back to the Apple store where they replaced the main controller...didn't fix the issue.

    Was informed it would need the main panel replacing at an eye watering ($1200 plus tax)

    Instructed by Apple to take it to another store for a 2nd opinion.

    Same result, was instructed by the store to call Apple Care as they agreed it was 'a bit of a lemon'.

    Apple Care essentially said they could offer a discount on the repair but it would still be just under a $1000.

    So after at least 6 (out of the way) visits to two different stores and countless phone calls, I'm left with investing over $2500 into a monitor which, I'm not willing to do.

    Cost of monitor + repair + repair = $TOO MUCH

    The reason I paid out the money for an expensive monitor was that I wanted something reliable and durable. Neither of these things was achieved and to 'rub salt into the wound' I was politely told by Apple it was just tough luck.

    I have invested heavily in the Apple ecosystem and feel very let down. I'm contemplating shifting my money elsewhere.

    nice product if it lasts

    Approximately 18 months after purchasing, the power supply and cord for one of my two Thunderbolt displays had to be replaced ($173). Three months later (now), the display failed; estimated replacement cost is over $800. If you buy this display, don't make my mistake--pay even more for the extended warranty.

    Turns your laptop into a desktop

    What was never mentioned to me before at the Apple store was that I could use this monitor without opening my laptop. The base of the monitor also operates as a heat sink when the laptop is tucked away under the monitor and on top of the stand. This organization helps to clear my desk. I wish I had known about this indispensable design feature before. I also very much appreciate the perfect integration of the monitor with my macbook pro without any need for adjustments. My work involves intensive graphics and the resolution is perfect with the necessary detail that I require.

    Really High Quality Display

    I am very happy with the display - it looks great on my desk, has plenty of expansion ports, camera is great, built-in speaker and microphone are of decent quality, and it works seamlessly with macbook pro and mac pro without any issues.

    Good Displays

    -I bought two within the same generation, however over a generation change of the macbook. I noticed immediately that my newer one had a little bit of a blue-greenish tint compared to the other. It is extremely subtle, but noticeable side-by-side with another display.

    Thunderbolt Display and Retina Macbook Pro

    Picked up the Thunderbolt Display for my photo editing work. Very pleased with the resolution, especially since I'm used to the Retina quality on my late 2013 Macbook Pro. Simple, elegant, Apple ease of use since the display provides power for the Macbook and a dock for peripherals. I plugged in the display attached the power and Thunderbolt connection to my laptop and was up and running. I paired an Apple Keyboard and Trackpad via bluetooth to complete my new workstation. At $999 it's pricey and has the USB 2.0 ports rather than 3.0 and is the reason it's not a 5 star rating. The speakers are not super loud but are clear and the display sleeps and wakes on command. Very happy with the purchase. I did buy Applecare as some of the reviews were concerning.

    Beautiful Monitor

    I have had two of the thunderbolt monitors working flawlessly with my home and my office iMacs. We have several others in the office and they have all worked without a glitch. Perhaps there are more problems with the laptops, I have only used it with the iMac, but the display gives a gorgeous image and it looks perfect next to the iMac.

    Great Product

    I have been using the Thunderbolt Display for about 6 months now. It has been a great docking station/monitor for my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013). The display has operated perfectly - I have not had any problems that some of the other reviews mentioned. I connect my MBP via the included power cord/thunderbolt cable and operate my MBP while it clamshell mode. The display has outstanding resolution and everything looks great on it. I use it for work and having so much landscape to use via the size of the display, I can easily have multiple windows/apps open at the same time and be able to see them all at the same time. Great product.

    Missed again

    Apple makes great products. However, if you want a display that can be properly calibrated for either photography or video Apple is not a good choice. They are sexy, glossy and gorgeous to look at – but they are ill suited to serious work and this display is yet another example of Apple missing the mark for pro users. Get an IPS panel up to the task of professional work with 10bit color space, full hardware level calibration, anti-glare coatings and the flexibility to work in both D55 and D65 color spaces. Apple could get this right but they are playing to the mass market. Fair enough. Just don't sell it like it's a professional tool because it's not.

    Beautiful display, but REALLY shoddy built-in cables will fail

    The thunderbolt cable is built into the display. Great and all, except for the fact that it goes bad after moderate use with a laptop. I don't know what it is about Apple and cables, but – like iPhone cables – the cable is NOT tolerant bending from normal use. After awhile the screen will flicker until the point of it not working at all. Google "thunderbolt display 27" cable failing" for more info.

    My first one failed. Replaced it, and now the replacement is failing.

    Good quality but blur fonts

    Having a Macbook pro retina 13'' 2015 model, yesterday i bought a 27'' thunderbolt display for my office. I am an eshop administrator man, so full of time i am working with safari browser. It's an amazing monitor, excellent quality construction, amazing colours but i have problem with the fonts. The fonts are blur so i am disappointed with this monitor. I try to find information about it on the internet but i found that many people have the same problem with blur fonts. I paid 1000 euros and i would be happy with this Apple product but suddenly i am not. If i could solve this problem i will be very happy with overall performance, but the truth is that my windows PC is looking far away better with the fonts performance.

    do not buy this display

    I've had this display for 1.5 years. I planned on using with my Macbook Pro and mac mini

    Let me tell you how awful it's been:
    -when it goes to sleep it doesn't wake up. to reset it i have to unplug the power supply and wait 15 minutes to overnight...the time varies.
    -if you use any usb device (superdrive, iPhone iPad chargers) it causes the display to go to black and again requires a reset.
    -I cannot use it at all with my laptop. simply connecting the thunderbolt and power cables to the display does not enable it to turn on. I have not figured out a way around this issue.
    -The only way i can get it to work now is by doing a fresh restart each morning on my mac mini, and turning off sleep and screensavers. I shut down the computer every time I use it and that seems to help.

    -Unfortunately I didn't purchase applecare for the unit. I have thought about calling up applecare anyway because my computer is under applecare.
    -No update from apple has fixed this issue.

    Noisy noisy noisy...

    The worst Apple product I've ever bought!
    If you plug the thunderbolt cable in a Macbook or anything else the display's loudspeakers start giving a horrible static noise. It's not that loud, but it's definitely hearable if you've placed the display in a calm room.
    Do you doubt? Just google "Thunderbolt Display Noise Speakers"...
    That's not a technical failure of the display I bought, it's one of the characteristics of this product. But Apple won't tell you before you haven't bought it!

    The most painful monitors I have ever used.

    I don't know why people rave about the Thunderbolt displays. They are so shiny and reflective as to be virtually unusable in a room with any ambient light. Just plain awful.
