Dont pay for the smart cover-defective

    • Written by from anaheim

Wouldnt give this any stars if site would allow it.This cover is very misleading,it is not a "perfect fit"as it advertises in the description. The magnetic strip is very weak and flimsy. While using my camera function with the cover still on, folded over, the magnet broke free and I tried to grab the iPad and the cover slipped and my iPad hit the ground. Cost me 249.00 to replay the shattered front glass. So far no response from apple in regards to my complaint so use caution with this product.

    It is Perfect.

    • Written by from BERLIN

Don't bother reading the low stars like I did before I bought this. It is meant to COVER the iPAD. Not protect it. that is why there is back smart cover compatible covers. BUt this is a perfect stand, cover, and personality for the iPads. I love it because its not bulky but it is really useful. It's not really an accessory either. It's actually like "need" for the iPad. It really makes an iPad, an iPad and since it's made by Apple, it won't look like a third party product. I love this because it doest protect the screen from tables or clunks. I consider this product. Its really helpful.

    It's a cover, not a handle!

    • Written by from Portland

If you are looking for a cover that doubles as a stand, this cover is excellent! If you are hoping for a full-body protective suit with a carrying handle, buy something else, but don't complain about this item! Who really thinks that they can carry around their iPad by this little cover attached by little magnets? You purchased an expensive tablet, treat it with care. Don't worry about the dust lines, they come off when you clean off all your typical finger smudges.

Only four stars however because when it's in the taller stand position, I find that the cover needs to be fuzzy side out or it won't stay in its triangular shape. I'd rather keep the fuzzy side enclosed to stay cleaner. also, four stars for the ridiculous price gouging from Apple for 75 cents of plastic.

    Doesn't work as advertised

    • Written by from Ann Arbor

I had my first iPad for 3 months and had problems with the cover almost from day one. The magnetic hinges were always coming unattached and scratching my ipad. I also didn't like the angles it would prop it up, it never seemed a very good angle for me, plus once I would get it to a good angle it would proceed to fall out of that position quickly. The last straw was when I was folding the cover over, the hinges came off the iPad and I somehow managed to drop my iPad smashing the screen to bits (but the cover was still safe in my hands). I went back to Apple and got a replacement, for a fee, but that same day I also went on-line and found the most sturdy case I could find. It's been over a year now and I've had no problems with my non-Apple case.

    Simple. Perfect.

    • Written by from Temecula

People who complain that the cover doesn't cover the back are missing the point of this elegant thoughtful product. It elegant and completely on point with each little detail. It clips on with ease, no scratching, aligns perfectly, and if you're smart enough to figure out that you can lay the ipad on the cover and not the back, you can take advantage of this very effectively simple cover.

That said if you are more like an industrial strength ipad user and need to be able to throw it around at a hurried pace, not taking care of where and how you place your ipad on surfaces maybe the cover isn't for you... but you should be able to tell the design is not meant for you just from from simply looking at it, saving yourself being unhappy from buying the wrong product for your needs.

Good job Steve Jobs and Apple.

    Flimsy, not very stable.

    • Written by from Timonium

I really don't understand how this is sold at the price it is. It is not all that supportive of the iPad which is really too heavy for the foldiing top to be an effective stand. The material is protective but as a stand, poor design.

Ruined My iPad, And my wood floor!

    • Written by from Skelmersdale

This cover as awful, cheaply made and is no different to any other cover other than it folds and stands up your iPad, Sort of!
I've had my iPad and smart cover for two months and over time I've noticed the magnet in my smart cover get weaker and weaker until this morning when I put it on my desktop in the movie/facetime position (which you can see above in the product description), anyway I put it down gently and made sure the smart cover was secure and the magnet slipped off! Next thing i knew my iPad was on the floor covered in dents and scratches, even my wood floor was dented! So because of this cheap, Diabolical cover my iPad is ruined and my wood floor has a huge dent in it! So if I was you I would pass and buy a cheaper alternative. I'm currently awaiting a response from Apple customer services as to what they are going to do about the damage caused to my iPad due to this failure of a cover. I thought I paid extra money for this thing to protect my iPad not to damage it! I wish I could Rate this thing Zero stars but I can't!

Does what it was designed to do

    • Written by from Ann Arbor

The Smart cover was not made to be a case for protection or for preventing scratches to the back. I love my Smart cover. It maintains the integrity of the iPad design. I personally prefer the polyurethane and think that it is more durable. I have mine combined with the neoprene sleeve, and it is perfect. The incase origami sleeve works particularly well with the smart cover and gives me a lot of different angles on which to prop the iPad. I love the Smart cover.

    Very poor quality

    • Written by from Sachse

I was quite disappointed in the build quality of this case. I returned it the day I got it. The form and fit is not snug, and feels very cheaply made.

The smart cover portion does not line up flush ontop, and I had constant problems with sleep and wake functionality. There are tons of third party covers that do the job better.

I highly recommend you look and feel in a store before buying.

I am still baffled that Apple thought this case was quality they would put their name on...

    Poorly manufactured

    • Written by from Engadine

I purchased the smart cover for my ipad, less then 4 months ago and since then I have been significantly disappointed. I take my ipad to and from uni every day and through the day to day use, the parts have started to peel away, exposing the plastic panels in the centre. Like anything once it startes to peel of it doesn't stop. I continue to use it, only because it protects the front of my ipad. I paid $45 for it and wouldn't be complaining if i paid what it was worth, which is $10. I took pictures of it for futre reference, but if you are thinking about purchasing it. Think about how it might only last a few weeks until the edges start to peel. I' sorry that i have to make this complaint but felt that it was needed.

Don't hold cover when taking photos/videos!

    • Written by from Madison Heights

We've had the smart cover on our ipad 2 for over a year now. The cover is nicely made, protects the screen when closed, folds for uses as in the info on website, & puts it to sleep. BUT: we've folded the cover back to take photos or video, holding the ipad w/2 hands, the magnetic connection can break allowing ipad to fall. You should NOT hold it by folded cover (easier said than done sometimes), when aiming camera for photo. Take it OFF. Last week, luck ran out, it hit a stone & concrete patio, shattering the glass screen. Functionality, fortunately, not effected. We didn't have accidental insurance, but found a local place to replace the screen at $140, considering ourselves very lucky. Have now ordered the smart case to use instead.

    Awesome minimalistic function!

    • Written by from Cleveland Heights

This cover does exactly what it was designed to do, protect the screen of the iPad, with minimal bulk, when you think that Apple managed to make it so it also puts it to sleep and wakes it up without waiting for it to turn on is amazing. Plus it doubles as a stand. I have never had a problem from day 1. I think the cover is almost as amazing as the iPad. Hey if you don't like it buy a bulky Targus cover.

    Awful, horrible, useless

    • Written by from Medford

It's pretty rare that I dislike a product enough to bother writing a review, but this product was a serious waste of money for me. It annoyed me enough that it actually affected my initial experience with my iPad. It definitely took away some of the fun of experiencing the iPad for the first time.

Snaps off too easily, metal hinges scratch laptop if used in same sleeve

    • Written by from Chandler

The idea is awesome: light weight and multiple angles. Unfortunately I find that with my Retina iPad the cover simply doesn't stay on well enough. It's constantly snapping off and causes me to fumble the iPad.

Additionally, I can't put it in my laptop sleeve because the hinges scratch it.

Great for ipad2 bad for ipad3

    • Written by from Sherbrooke

Got an iPad 3 and discovered that the magnets of the smart cover are not strong enough for the extra weight of the iPad 3. The cover is perfect for the iPad 2 where i've been using it for a year.

SMART COVER "not" in three weeks it started to rust, in the hinge there are pins either they are the magnets or steel pin dowels that hold the plastic in place where it make contact to the iPad. It started to rust and leave stains on edge of the IPad that barely came off and it started to loss it holding strength pop off real easy. Spead good money on the I pad just to get rust stains on it not to smart! I got my temporaly fixed for now until I save money to buy something else better DO NOT BUY IT NOT A SMART BUY

    Worked great... At the start

    • Written by from Beauval

I've had the smart cover for a couple months now since I bought it along side my iPad 3. It work very good at first, connected to the side fast and stayed on well. Until after a month of use the metal connecting plate started bending a little outward. Now it doesnt connect very well and falls off easily. I would recommend a whole case that covers the front and back.

    Looks cool, barely works

    • Written by from Parsippany

The purpose of a protective cover is to protect, but this barely fits the bill. Apple is famous for it's impeccable design and engineering, but this time they focussed too much on form and not enough on function.

The cover is held to the iPad with magnets, so when any sort of weight is applied, say that of an iPad, it separates from that which it is supposed to protect. This means that if you accidentally grab it only by the cover, your iPad will go crashing to the ground (and in my case, the screen shattered).

Also, because it uses strong magnets, don't put it in the same bag as your wallet if you don't want to wipe your credit cards, and don't put it next to any portable hard drives either, unless you are trying to erase them. The old Apple iPad cover they made for the 1st generation was much better, even if it was a bit uglier. At least it worked.
