    Ruins really fast

The cable that connects to the computer is so fragile, I think they should redesign the charger or at least look for a better material than just a simple plastic

    Frayed small cable

    • Written by from New Hudson

I am here wondering why my charger was getting so hot and not charging my laptop. I've had my computer and charger 2 years now. I am experiencing the same thing 392 other 1 star review customers are experiencing. My cable is frayed at the base, is getting extremely hot and I am now using my wife's charger to get work done tonight. I will head to the apple store tomorrow to get a new one. We will see what they have to say about it. I just ran out of my apple care warranty I think. $90 out of pocket :(

    Simply Awful.

    • Written by from Richmond

The DC side of cord overheated at the base of the inverter and frayed away from it. This happened right after my warrantee ran out. Why in the world does apple not make this a standard DC plug? Then at least I could replace the cord instead of the entire assembly.

    Apple fix this fragile adapter!

    • Written by from LONDON

Terrible design/construction. The weak cable broke and does not work anymore, after very careful use. Replacement cost is also extortionate. Shame on you Apple.

Systemic issue with MacBook Pro Adapters

    • Written by from Lisle

When the MagSafe chargers are in good condition they are great and function perfectly fine.

However, over time they fray so easily it's ridiculous. I had an older charger with an old MacBook Pro that miraculously lasted for six years without issue. Since switching to my current MacBook Pro with Retina display, the charger frayed at the most unexpected location: near the plug into the laptop. I have no idea how that happen since I am pretty careful with storing and transporting the power adapter.

I suspect there is a greater issue with the outer casing of the MacBook Pro Power Adapters. My boyfriend has gone through five of them in the last three years, including my old one. Each one frayed at the same location, near the adaptor.

I guess it's time to shell out another $100 +, but I sure wish Apple would address this issue.

    Completely substandard product

    • Written by from Belleville

What is it exactly about Apple where they refuse to correct this known deficiency? Over the past eight years I have seen no less than five charger cords fray and stop working. It never gets better. It's almost as if they refuse to fix the problem because Apple users continue to buy the product, while also making huge profits on this flimsy power adapter as people have to replace them every year or two. The manager in charge of this department needs to be fired. Completely unsatisfactory. What a disaster this design is. Say what you want about PC, at least their power adapters last. What's use is a computer without power?

I go though 1 charger a year. It is getting old. I'm tired of paying $80 for a poorly constructed charger. Apple I expect better quality.

    Horrible power cord

Please make better power cords or I have no choice but switch to your competitors, I am sure they will appreciate my business as I have owned many iPhones and iPads. Should I pick Samsung or lg.

Apple Should Take Responsibility For This Horrible Product

    • Written by from Spokane

Now on my third MacBook Pro retina 85w power supply in a three year old laptop. Same thing happened both times. The cord turned yellow at the magsafe connector end, and then became frayed virtually overnight. This occurred over normal use both times. Simply MBPr was plugged in and it failed. The supplies run $90.00 with tax and shipping and are easily the worst product Apple has ever made. If the actual cord that failed could be replaced, obviously the cost would be significantly lower, but unfortunately Apple's design requires that the whole power supply be replaced. The company needs to own up to its user base and provide a quality 85w supply for its flagship laptops rather than making it a yearly premium for MBPr owners. This is inexcusable; Apple knows the power supply design is defective; yet it continues to ignore hundreds of user reviews here and elsewhere.

    A real HAZARD

    • Written by from london

This power supply and probably Magsafe 2 is about the worst thing ever. I've used MacBooks for years and this is the only one that has been a constant source of frustration.

    1. It gets so hot I can neither touch it or the top left hand side of the MacBook, this can't be good for the battery - I cannot leave it to charge unattended as it is a hazard
    2. The pins on both the charger and the MacBook Pro are burnt - on the Mac side, almost disintegrated
    3. It takes quite a bit of fiddling around to even get it to charge
    4. I'm on PSU number 3 in 16 months

I hope the next generation of PSU is as good as Magsafe 1 was.

I've been through 3 of these. The wire wears out where it connects to the box. This is poorly designed and $79 every time I need one is killing me!

    TERRIBLE PRODUCT

    • Written by from Chicago

After purchasing one about 5 months ago, to which i had to buy one 9 months prior to that, now i have to purchase another 80 dollar charger that blows out, so I'm on my 4th charger, including the original one I got when getting the laptop.

I take good care of my charger since they're so darn expensive, but this is outrageous. The only thing I do with my charger is bring it here and there from class to home while having it nicely and safely coiled up in my backpack. This is horrible. Apple needs to make a charger that can last AT LEAST 2 YEARS. I haven't had a charger this horrible in my life. 5 month run, WTF.

    Poor Design

    • Written by from Naples

This is my second Macbook. The previous charger cord laid flush along the edge of the computer. The new design for the Macbook with Retina display sticks straight out. It gets knocked off repeatedly. You can't even set it in your lap while it is charging without the chord falling off. Why not go back to the old design? Will the old charger work with the Retina display macbook?

    Flimsy and cheaply made!

    • Written by from Newark

To think that this low quality laptop charger is almost a hundred dollars is ridiculous! I'm careful as can be with the charger yet the thinner wire is completely destroyed from a year of use. I'm scared I will get electrocuted if a drop of water happens to land on the open wiring. I've tried wrapping it in electrical tape but theres too many tears in the cord. PC chargers are a bit thicker but they actually work and don't degrade over time. Maybe take some notes and get your stuff together Apple!

    Terrible Charger

    • Written by from hyderabad

Worst charger ever. The thin white wire is too delicate and it tears off very easily from the base of the adapter. 80$ is way too big a price for such a terribly designed product.

I've had my MacBook Pro for less than 3 months and the adapter cord is dead. Not only to I have to have a $54+ hold on my card for them to send me a box to look at the cord, I have to wait until they inspect the BRAND NEW cord and send me another. Thanks for the $3000 paperweight in the meantime.

    • Written by from Coquitlam

Like others, I've had to replace my cable 3 times despite taking care of it properly. The only "rough" thing I do to the cable is transport it to and from school in my backpack. This is just plain bad design and Apple support refuses to be of any help or claim any responsibility. They simply tell you to take better care of your next cable which you'll have to pay another $100 for next year.

    No Quality

    • Written by from Kings Park

I am writing this review with 3% battery on my Macbook Pro. After this review, my laptop will have to be charged by its new owner because $320 in charge cables is absolutely asinine. I can't do it anymore. It is becoming completely redundant, and using my Macbook is now a hassle. It is a shame that I have to switch to WINDOWS to avoid unnecessary charger fees. You would think that after so many negative reviews, Apple would get a grip and redesign a defective model.

The Pros: This cable did not set my house on fire when it burned

Falls Out Constantly & Cord Breaks

    • Written by from Stillwater

I so much preferred the earlier version (2013 13'' version) That one at least stayed in most of the time and only got knocked out every once in awhile, but this one gets knocked out so easily that a light breeze could knock it out. I hate having to put it back in 5 times a day.
Also, just like all mac cords, the coating on the cord begins to bend and degrade so easily. I am super careful with it, but it will start to tear after only a few months of use. I now have taken to wrapping it up with electrical tape to make it more secure.
