    Do not buy it!

    • Written by from Cliffside Park

Time capsule is a really horrible product, this is not a bad product, but really bad product.

The drives are extremely slow, the router is also very slow and you will need to restart this device on daily bases.

I strongly recommend that you look elsewhere, and I know the good looks of this product might make you want to buy it, but please don't if you looking for something reliable.

    Easy, Quick

    • Written by from Culpeper

Have been using for about two months with no issues.

Very easy to set up. AC speeds are very good. Backup works seamlessly and easily. It just works.

The range is not quite as good as some new routers, but it is a solid combination of features and is much easier to set up than the other routers. Using in a 3500 square foot house with good coverage.

The only reason I rated four stars instead of five is because I think we ought to be able to set aside some of the drive space for our own use as a home server so that we do not have to rely on cloud services.

Despite that, I would definitely buy this again.

    The best router I've used

    • Written by from Fremont

I went through my fair share of WiFi routers. All of them that I've used, from Belkin, Linksys, D-link, etc were all painful to setup and had options I'm sure their makers don't even understand. They also got super slow as time went on, need to be restarted every now and again to keep things running optimally. Yes, they were cheap, probably the only good thing about them.

Enter Time Capsule. I bought this along with my Retina Macbook Pro two years ago now in 2013. It's 2015 and is been well over 2 years, I I thought I would at least share my experience. First, it's so simple to use! The setup was painless, just open Airport Utility on Mac or iPhone and enter the network name and pretty much done! Airport Utility is one simple app as well. Not a lot of options but that's a good thing for me (not that I'm not technologically savvy -- heck I'm a software developer, but I have no patience with hard to use hardware/software).

I also use Time Machine to back it up and encrypt my backup. Two other people in my house also back up to the same time capsule. 2TB is plenty for us. The Time Capsule automatically cleans up older backups and pretty much takes care of everything.

After setup, there is 0 maintenance that I've had to do on it, aside from the fact that there were 1-2 software updates, which again, was painless. I don't even remember ever restarting the Time Capsule outside of power outages. Folks, this is one product that I don't mind saying, It just works ™.

Sure it's about $100-$200 more expensive than the rest of the guys, but you know what? It's worth it, just for the experience alone. You can get a decent AC wifi router for $100 less than this. But they would be more painful to use, harder to maintain, have way lower quality of customer support, and they would need replacing after 1-2 years because somehow they manage to slow down as time goes on.

This is hands down a 5/5 product for me. Couldn't be happier.

    Works easily, reliably and fast

    • Written by from MARIETTA

Bought this a couple years ago and we have had no issues until today (more on that later). Easy set up. Easy back ups. Ease of mind since we have had other laptops hit the ground (two boys) with memory potentially lost with no back ups since we never get around to that. Now everything is regularly backed up and we hardly notice (a few minutes of slow work when this is happening).
Brought home and up and running in minutes. First backups were done and took a while, but since then they go very quickly.
Now regarding speed. I was curious to see why people were giving one star and noticed many referred to slower speeds. I don't get it. I did speed tests today to compare the Comcast wifi signal (under 20mbs up and download) to the AirPort speeds (125Mbs download and 20 upload). We have the Xfinity Blast service. Not sure why the wifi provided by Xfinity/Comcast is so slow, and glad we bought this one or would have no benefit from the Blast we are paying for.
The only "problem" we've had was today when I tried to backup my laptop and it wasn't finding the backup disc. Went to apple website to trouble shoot and it said to ensure they were both on the same network. I went right by that recommendation thinking of course I was on the right network. But after futzing around for 30 mins with no success I checked and found my lap top for some reason was set to the unlocked comcast wireless network in our house meant for guests. Fixed that and easily backed up.

Great as a Time Machine & Router but USB 2?

    • Written by from Aitkin

I bought this in February of 2015 so roughly 6 months ago - it's still working great.

Time Machine: three days after setting this up I accidentally wiped my hard drive (my own fault, messing around with the Root account) and was able to network book (over WiFi no less) to the TC and restore from a backup automatically made about 3 hours earlier. FANTASTIC!!!!

WiFi: I routinely connect at 850+ Mbps which is great. Connection is reliable and covers my house (about 1,000 sq feet) and back yard. I scanned the airspace in my home and manually set the WiFi channels to avoid interference with neighbors. The auto channel selection sometimes picked overlapping frequencies...

Internet Router: does the basics BUT if you're looking for advanced features like dynamic DNS look elsewhere. The TC follows the philosophy of "It just works" - yep it does, with simple features...

Ethernet Switch: seems to work just fine. I have an AirPort Extreme in my basement for kids to connect to for LAN parties connected with a wire. Updating security settings on the TC automatically updates the Extreme - very nice feature

USB 2: WTH?!?! Why not USB 3 ? Sure you can connect an external drive but it's SLOWWWWWWWW. This is the one thing that really disappointed me... the TC should not only have USB 3 but also Thunderbolt - Apple has it on ALL but one of it's computers - why not here?

This is the first apple product that I am really disappointed about. I wanted to upgrade my existing airport extreme to a Time Capsule so that I would have a wireless router with wireless HDD functionality. I spent 3 hours trying to overcome the self-assigned IP address issue but couldn't so I gave it back. I exchanged it for a regular Airport Extreme, which had the exact same issue, although I was able to fix it. Apple please fix this.

    Use As Intended

    • Written by from Boca Raton

I purchased my first Time Capsule in 2011 and just replaced it with the current model. Yes the old one still works and has been backing up three macs hourly since it was new. It has never been turned off. It's currently a back up for the current Time Capsule. This is what I know. Do not put the Time Capsule in an enclosure, make sure you have good air flow around it, set up the time capsule as Apple instructs don't think you know better and use the equipment as intended. This is a durable product don't be afraid of the reviews by those who mean well, but may be legends in their own minds

    Always turns off

    • Written by from Hemet

Can I please get a refund? I tried to give this product multiple chances, over the year it constantly goes offline and turns off, and is seriously unreliable. For the price and compare to the quality Apple provides in products, this is by far one of the worst products and needs to be recalled. I love Apple, and have been loyal with iPhones, iPad, Apple TV and my Mac Book Pro, but this was the biggest disappointment, I've lost data and wasted my money. Can I trade it in or something? It's been almost a year, now it fails every day.

Failed after just over a year

    • Written by from Killeen

I purchased this $300 time capsule brand new in Sep 2014 and everything was working fine. I am not a power user, I do not demand a lot from my devices, however this Time Capsule stopped working just outside of the warranty coverage, and apple will not do anything about it. I paid over $300 considering tax and expected something this expensive to last more than a year. I am extremely disappointed and urge you to not purchase this and take your money elsewhere.

    I'm a Fanboy But Disappointed

    • Written by from Clarendon Hills

So far - not great, not terrible, but definitely disappointing. Some aspects work great, others are nonfunctional. Backup is great. Wireless router is great. Ethernet out is terrible. Which is really strange, right? How does the automatic backup work well, wireless work well, and the least difficult aspect (from an engineering perspective) work terribly? All three ethernet ports don't work well at all. Whether it's plugged into a smart tv or a printer, it doesn't matter, the ethernet has been barely operative from day one.

I willingly pay a premium for Apple products because I expect that the product will be worth the extra expense. Sadly, this one isn't.

Easy to use just not for as long as you would think.

    • Written by from Tucson

Bought the airport, set it up easily, used it with no problems for over a year, then totally dead. No warning of impending failure. It just went kaput. I expect more out of a device that paid more than three hundred dollars. I love apple and most of their products but reading up on this device I realized I made a mistake.

    This one works great!

    • Written by from CORINTH

My first TC (purchased about 2 years ago) had some mating issues with my other equipment - likely the Comcast modem. So I returned the TC. I am still with Comcast, but have purchased my own (ZOOM) modem and decided to try another TC. Hooked it all up, and it works great! Fast wifi connections all throughout the house, whether on our MBA's, iPhones, Wii U, XBOX, TV set or DirecTv. Plus, we can now back our MBA's up wirelessly! Granted this is still a new set-up, so longevity is still TBD, but initially, it is working great!

(Also, to note, this time I bought one from Amazon. It was used, so I returned it and bought it from Apple instead. I would not suggest buying from anyone other than Apple unless you can physically see that it is indeed a brand new unit you will be bringing home.)

    Bad Choice

    • Written by from Petaluma

After years of Airport Extreme use, I replaced my working device with this Time Capsule. Big mistake. It interferes with my micro-cell device and slows my internet speed by 30%. No amount of re-jiggering with Apple Care techs fixes the problem. Very disappointing. It seems to be an Apple firmware problem but it is not possible to down-grade the firmware to an earlier, workable version.

    Product Defective

    • Written by from Racine

I really wanted the device to work, but that was not the case. I could not set up the device through the Airport Utility, it continued to say that there was an unexpected error. I was able to connect with my iPhone and set it up, but only the WiFi worked. Sent hours trying to figure it out. Worst Apple product experience I've had, and I've had a lot of Apple products. It was returned today.

2TB Time Capsule: Wireless capabilities disappeared shortly after purchase (were intermittent for a while) and now it doesn't even connect when physically plugged in via an ethernet cable to my MBP. Extremely disappointed in such an expensive HDD. Save your money and buy something else!

    Slows internet speed

    • Written by from Ajman

I love apple products so much but i am very shocked on this one. The airport time capsule is very good with backups but the problem is it slows down the internet connection so badly. My internet is usually fast but with airport time capsule its so slow and also sometimes it disconnects from the devices that connects to it. Now all i do is whenever i need backup i switch it on then back up my computer or else its off and i use my normal internet to get the best speed ;'( .

Can't even get it to work

    • Written by from Chicago

I followed the set up instructions. The computer can be connected to the Airport Time Capsule but there is no internet connection, despite all the green lights. I waited for more than 20 min and tried resetting. Finally, I had to switch back to the older Airport Time Capsule and back to internet. What is the usual set up time once you connect the WAN port cable? Thanks.

This thing is useless in all aspect except maybe as a network router (and not even wireless). First it will back-up your info but you can never ever restore from it actually. Good for storing versions of documents, but if you ever try to recover a computer or upgrade to a new computer, it will never work. I've had 2 different Time Capsules and tried both to upgrade to a new computer and both times it failed so I just had to manually transfer my data. The wireless is slow and terrible. The router constantly will disappear from the network making time machine backups impossible until you restart the router by unplugging and replugging. Just get another router and attach a NAS.
