Intermittent shutdown problems...Latest version has engineering problems!

    • Written by from Anchorage

I have had Apple routers and Time capsules for many years and until recently the experience has been mostly good. However, that said, I am very disappointed with the performance of my second 3TB TC purchased in late 2014. I have had to return and exchange it twice now and am currently "testing" the third unit.

It would appear there is a serious hardware or firmware problem that leads the device to power down intermittantly. It can power down once or twice a day sometimes, or may go for a week or more just fine then quite. The only way to reset it is unplug and replug the power cable and it sputters back to life.

The sign of failure, apart from the obvious is the LED light goes off (while still plugged in).

Apple have been pretty good and quick about providing a new unit. I am surprised though they cannot seem to read or access the TC diagnostics on board which supposedly get sent back to the mother ship also? Looking into the logs it is, and should be possible for the techs to see if thermal or other factors tripped the unit OFF.

Oh well..I'll continue testing #3 and hope for the best this time. I think its most likely the latest engineering version thats at fault. Its worth noting my original 3TB TC purchased in 2010-2011 works just fine and has never given any problems.

I'm an Apple Fan, but good grief. This is garbage.

    • Written by from Highland

Shame on me for buying these over and over. I've owned 4 and all have gone back in too short of time. I saw one guy saying his went bad in a year. Mine seems to be just a little longer than that. Bottom line, run the other way and take your money with you. You'll be better off!

    Don't waste your money

I bought this product and we couldn't get it to work properly. After troubleshooting with Apple and getting nowhere, we finally brought it into the Apple Store. They determined that it was defective and sent us a new one. The new one worked for a little more than a year and then it completely quit working. We used it as our primary router for about 5 months of that year and when it worked, it worked great but it did not last long. When I bought this, I was under the impression that I would be also use it as a storage device but that wasn't the case. This is only designed to back up your existing storage. I think that if this were configured to also be a supplementary storage device and be a little more user friendly, it would be a great concept but I think the product quality definitely needs to be improved first. I would not recommend purchasing this product until they improve it.

    Speed problem

    • Written by from Los Angeles

What I've learned is that TWC wifi modem is much faster than the airport time capsule 3TB, but to perform a wireless backup, a TWC wifi modem has to be in a bridge mode and airport time capsule (wifi) host. When TWC wifi modem setup as a host wifi modem-router the speed of the Internet is as promised even when I'm 50 feet away from the router, unfortunately the time capsule will not perform a (wifi) backup because it has to be the host router according to apple tech support recommendation. I would never buy this airport time capsule 3TB if I knew that its so slow. I pay for a fast internet connection 100 Mbps but because of the slow airport time capsule I'm getting around 20-30 Mbps.

What happened? I thought products were improving. Terrible Wifi.

    • Written by from Rushville

I was very excited to upgrade my old Time Capsule to the sleek new 3TB, but I was in for a rude awakening. I had lots of problems from day 1 with dropped connections and devices not even picking up the new Time Capsule. Support assumed I had a bad antenna and had me drive 2 hours to the nearest Apple Store. They exchanged it with no problems. The 2nd try was EXACTLY the same as the first. Dropped connections and devices not able to access the TC. I even bought a new Wifi printer. As soon as I plugged in my old TC, everything worked great. There won't be a 3rd try. This thing is garbage. It's like having a PC again...

First unit died inside of 3 months. I have been through TWO MORE units and BOTH of these simply decide to drop internet or power down. Requires a manual unplug to get it back up and running. Totally unreliable. Shame on you Apple. Next I will try to get my money back and buy a real wifi router....

Purchased this unit from a third party electronic store. Arrived very quickly and setup was a breeze. I was especially excited about the increased speeds, etc. I had had no problems with my little Airport Extreme, but thought the major step up would be a good idea. Well, after about 6 months, I am seriously regretting my purchase. I have Atlantic Broadband as my cable and internet provider. Well, I had just re-installed the ATC-3TB three days ago. Things have been going fairly smoothly... the usual difficulty in recognizing the ATC by my Mac BookPro Retina, and a seemingly reluctance to do backups, for whatever reason. But, over looking that minor annoyance, everything else seemed to be going along swimmingly. Then IT happened again. Sunday evening, around 9:00 pm, internet service all but ceased. No Safari, no FaceBook, nada. Zip. Creeping blue progress line. Went back and re-installed the little AirPort Extreme. Voila! Service back on, everyone back on line. We are all happy. I guess I can use the ATC as a plug in backup and keep my old AirPort Extreme as my router. Pretty darn expensive hard drive.

Very unstable, and Airport Utility is virtually useless

    • Written by from BALTIMORE

Worked for the first year. Now it is very unstable. Every time we run Airport Utility the Time Capsule "cannot be found". We have to power recycle the Time Capsule. Every time! Then one and only one of our many devices kept dropping off of the LAN until I changed IPv6 settings on both Time Capsule and iMac. Really, Apple? Apple tech support has zero clue as to why this is happening and refuses to help. My Time Capsule is essentially becoming a very, very expensive paperweight. Thanks a lot, Apple!

    Hard Drive Won't Stay Mounted

    • Written by from Nashville

Unreliable. The hard drive portion of the product is supposed to be a network disk, but it will not stay mounted. It drops off and disconnects. Have to unplug AirPort Time Capsule to reboot. Pain in the tail and jeopardizes backups. Works fine as a Wireless Access Point, but not as a hard drive. Come on, Apple . . . You can do better!

    Not up to expectations

    • Written by from Aurora

I have a new MacBook Pro with 16 Gb RAM, 2.8 GHz i7, 1 Tb SSD drive. Can't buy a better one. It took 4 days to do the first Time Machine backup and 2 days to do the second. WAY TO SLOW to be useful especially with the MacBook Pro. Should have saved the money and stuck to my old system and just used an external USB 3 drive. I could get 2 , 2Tb drives for the $200 extra it cost

wireless network is terrible! much worse signal strength than older model!

    • Written by from Frederick

The signal strength from my old Time Capsule was MUCH better. It is so bad that I had to set up my old Time Machine nearby and then use it to extend my wireless network to get reliable signals in my home. It still "drops" my signal at various times (the old Time Machine never did that!) and ticks me off when I am trying to download something, listen to music, or watch a video. I have been through the setup for this thing multiple times and have even reset it to factory settings, then tried setting it up again. Nothing works. Sorry to have spent $399 for such a piece of junk!

Worked for a year and a few weeks

    • Written by from West Babylon

Purchased this on June 22,2013, it worked great for a year and a few weeks, now it just makes a clicking noise and doesn't put out wifi. My last few experiences with Apple have been extremely painful making me question my faith in their iMacs and now Time Capsules.

Es muy lento, copiar cualquier archivo toma horas. Hacer el backup con time machine puede llegar a tomar 14 horas y eso que son sólo 300 GB.

Not worth the money -- just get a firewire hard drive

    • Written by from Menlo Park

This product is immensely frustrating. It may work OK initially, but wait until you upgrade to the next gen software, like Mavericks. Want to plug it in via ethernet for longer backups -- get ready to try this multiple times and return to find a "Backup Failed" message for reasons that require a lot of effort to resolve. Unless you have an office environment, you're just going to turn off the "hourly" backups out of frustration. Want to change the frequency of the backups, get ready to buy a third party app that works about half the time. Do yourself a favor, just look at all of the support topics for this product and all of the frustrated users. Yes, the concept is great and it is another slick looking Apple product, but you're paying a lot of money for basic wireless functionality that's available from other dedicated storage makers.

    Slow router!

    • Written by from toronto

"Upgraded" to this from an older version of AirPort Extreme.

Have to re- boot this every couple of days.

I hard cabled my iMac to my router 'cause the airport is so unreliable. Right now my air book kept crapping out on internet. Did a speed test. On two wifi connected iBooks and my iPad vs. my hard wired iMac.

49.8 Mbps downloads hard wired to router....3.89 Mbps over the wireless network. And yes, I made sure no other devices were in the wireless network.

    Yeah, it is that bad.

Going to re hook up my old Extreame.

    $400 paperweight.

I spent 6 hours trying to get this to work. Connected minimum cables to keep it simple. Power on and get solid amber as per book. Then it goes to flashing amber and stays there, no green light that indicates I can go to setup utility. Modem is working, existing wifi is working. This second time that Apples "simple setup" is not so simple. Will try again later today, then it's back to Apple Shop for a replacement or refund. There are cheaper alternatives for faster wifi but not so pretty.

    massive waste of money

    • Written by from TAMARIN

I recently got the 3TB APTC. It was very easy to set up and works well as a router, however its a COMPLETE FAIL as a hard drive which is the the selling point (price) of the device. It constantly looses wireless connection with my early 2013 Macbook Pro, which in turn means I can't back up anything.. Through reading posts, it seems to be a Mavericks problem, but Mavericks has been out for months now and this problem should have been resolved by now!!
To top it all off, to create a wired connection to my mac I now need to buy a ethernet-thunderbolt connection from apple, because my macbook deosnt have ethernet and the APTC doesn't have Thunderbolt.. really annoyed!!
Don't buy until apple resoles this issue..

Not a good router. Not a good network Disk.

    • Written by from South Colby

Very disappointed. The hard drive portion of the product is supposed to be a network disk, but it will not stay mounted. It just drops off and disconnects when it feels like it. So, when the network disk dismounts there is no backup and - for me - no security system. Very serious flaw. Would NOT buy again.

Well, for the short time it actually worked, it was slow and had wireless connectivity issues. Lo and behold, just weeks after the warranty expired, so did the hardware.
