AirPort Extreme Base Station: another out-the-park home run

    • Written by from Kenner

It was time to get serious and call Mother Apple for the latest and greatest AirPort Extreme Base Station when my D-link WBR-2310 RangeBooster G Wireless Router went off the reservation. The emblematically elegant Airport Extreme micro-tower was delivered in two days and ten minutes later she was vigorously pumping a flood of energy to all points in my single story sprawling 4,400 square foot home. The Base Station immediately prompted for a seamless firmware update on initial connection and subsequent configuration with Apple's complementary Airport Utility iPhone app was incredibly simple and intuitive. Simplicity of installation, price point, form & functionality, performance, support, and Apple's "no questions asked" money back guarantee made this device a game breaker for me. And kudos to my Apple sales person, Adrian, for clearly and accurately presenting the multiple advantages and ease of installation of the Airport Extreme device, as well as to Apple Inc. for adeptly removing the pain from router installation and management.

    Love the AirPort Extreme

Got this router the other day and it is the best router I have ever used. I have all Apple devices (with the exception of my smart tv....cough cough) and had a heck of a time with other routers and this is a god send! I dont know why i didn't buy this sooner.

It connects my MacBook Pro, iPhone 5, iPad Air, Smart TV, and printer without even breaking a sweat. Set up was super easy on my iPhone. It also allows for guest networks which I love. Thank you Apple for continuing to make amazing products!

I purchased this router because I am becoming an apple enthusiast. It basically set itself up, easiest router setup with security installed i have ever experienced. it is faster than my old router, and has better range, but my old router was old. I am sure there are comparable routers and even routers with better reviews, but I am very happy.

    very reliable and super fast

My house is fairly large with two floors and a basement. Our old router would cut out every few days and we dealt with it for four years. After we bought a new PC desktop and laptop for the house, we decided to upgrade our router.

Before buying this, I read a ton of reviews ans there were lots of people having problems from not being able to use it in an existing network, to the range being awful, to not being able to connect an external hard drive or printer. However, we decided to buy it and try it out and ran into ALL of these problems. Literally took forever to get it set up (it was easy for my mac pro and our iPhones, but not the PCs).

HOWEVER, after simple google searches we were able to solve everything. The signal is so strong and fast that I've stayed connected and used my wifi from 2 houses away! yes it took some work to set it up right, but I'm not going to blame the Airport extreme for my personal ignorance, which I feel like many people who give negative reviews do. Wr have a 1 TB external hard drive attached and our printer. Everyone in my house uses netflix/hbogo all the time and my brother and I are PC gamers. The signal has never dropped for 9 months now.

I should add that I work in technology and have built several PCs myself and I still had trouble so those "support" people you call can't really help you if you won't even admit your own ignorance and blame them.

Let's make a secure home network FUN!

    • Written by from Barrington

I've wrestled with a Linksys wireless router over the years and left security settings off to avoid access problems for my big family. I shelled out the money for the AirPort Extreme thinking it is more expensive than some of the competition but not by much and if it's an Apple product that's intuitive to use, the money will be well-spent. I was right.

I plugged in the router and followed the very simple directions. By the time it powered up, I had a setup window waiting for me on my MacBook Pro ready to name the network and set a password. It's fast as far as I can tell, it's much more powerful than my last router - no dead spots in my old house / approximately 1,600 square feet, 2 floors, a detached cottage in the back yard - they are all connected with a good signal strength!

I also downloaded the iPhone app which allows you to manage your device and monitor users connected. I don't really need to use it but I think it's pretty darn cool!

I have a few computers running with it, phones and mobile tablets, a usb connected printer (to the AirPort Extreme) and it's all working great! I would highly recommend this product for anyone like me that isn't an IT genius but wants top notch performance and security.

OK I have had an Airport Extreme before and it wasn't very good. I tried this one after reading some of these reviews. My problem was that that I had very poor to none Wi-Fi in the family room(modem in the other end on the house). It's not a big house but there are lots of corners and rooms. Well let me say that this little devil works perfectly in the family room, I now have 2 bars of Wi-Fi. I then plugged in my 3 year old Airport Express in there and bingo I have Full bars in the family room. Now talk about easy, I plugged in the Airport Extreme to the modem and within 2 minutes Airport Utility recognized it and asked if I wanted it to replace my Network and keep the same password. Just re-entered the password. Then I plugged in the Airport Express and by the time I got back to the computer it too was up and running.
If you are dissatisfied with your current wireless router, get this one

    Nice Improvement over Previous Generation

    • Written by from Birmingham

I have a cable modem in one room and do most of my work in another. I extended my network with previous generation airport extremes and really took a hit on internet speed over wifi. I replaced both airport extreme's with the current version (in the store) and the internet speed improvement was huge. So if you're on the fringe, just upgrade, it's worth it. These are VERY nice routers and worth the upgrade.

    Easy .

After reading all reviews on the negative side I was a bit hesitant. My old extreme died on me and a new router was needed.
Since my household is mainly Macs, 3 of them and various iPads and iPhones and my android phone I decided to give it a try.
Setup on my iMac was done in minute and everything connected without a hitch. Even my Naim Unity in the other end of my house enjoys a strong signal. It also runs cool where my old extreme was kind of hot. It also looks good compared to competitors.

Maybe it's because of the home network we had before this...
I thought we had a good setup. I had an expensive router on one band, I had an expensive router on the other band. Most of the house had a signal, and most of it was decent. Of course, there were a couple rooms that didn't get a good signal, so we used a powerline adapter for that room. Over time we added more and more switches all over the place to extend wired reliability to our wireless network. But things were good. Well, actually, they were as good as I thought they could be. We'd get dropped connections from time to time. Occasional slow downs even though the modem was still claiming the internet hadn't slowed. The wifi printer would have bouts of instability.

So, eventually, we got this. This wonderful, amazing, intelligent (and might I add, good looking) piece of equipment. I did the manual labor, and the Extreme did everything else. It reaches further, faster, stronger. No more dual routers, no more powerline adapter, no more switches all over the place, no more "printer offline" messages, no more deception about what a 'good' network is.

    Thank you, Apple Airport Extreme!

Replaced my 1st Generation Time Capsule

    • Written by from Warminster

My 1st generation Time Capsule was nearly 6/7 years old and was starting to show its age as far as sharing out my broadband so I decided to replace it with this and retire my Time Capsule to just back up duties.

So far the speed increase is unbelievable, if this one lasts as long as the one it replaced I will be very happy.

    Excellent product

After spending years suffering through PC challenges, I bought my high schoolers two Mac Pros and changed from Net Gear to my AirPort Extreme. I was worried it wouldn't go smoothly, but those were unfounded. It was easy, simple, and the speeds are smokin fast now. Connected my printer to my AE, and both laptops picked it up and printed with no problem. I love Apple products and will buy nothing else. Another note...the UNiversity Village Apple store was terrific as well, in their help and customer service. Well done Apple....

Once you go mac you never go back.I have had different routers and I may say since I had been using apple routers I would never buy anything else. Well built very strong signal easy to use and you can set up from you're I phone or any cell phone . You can change any set up on the router with you're cell and take charge. Find the router that is best for you but make sure it's an apple router. You will not be disappointed. Save some money now and this will be the only router you will need. Buy more than one apple router to reach those areas that are weak or no signal and they will connect automatically and find all the apple router in you're home and give you great signal coverage.

    Best wireless router to date!

    • Written by from Fort Dix

I have nothing, but positive things to say about the AirPort Extreme. Quick story why I took a chance and purchased this product. I am a FIOS customer and running their Quantum 50/25 Mbps. For those who are familiar with their initial issue wireless router know that it is pretty pathetic running on G band. I live in 1800 sqft condo and the router is located in the living room. I was lucky to get a signal up the stairs if at all. So, I decided to buy their N band wireless router which improved the range, but not by much. I was getting roughly 20/10 Mbps throughout the house. After going through and reading a lot of the positive reviews on here I decided to shell out the $184 and purchase it. Best decision ever! I bridged the AirPort Extreme through the FIOS router and now getting 58/38 Mbps throughout the house. Its pretty insane of the difference it makes.

We have avery large old house with 2-foot thick stone walls. Had been having difficulty getting the signal throughout the house from the basement. Old one did a good job with a few well-placed express as boosters. The new tower-like extreme is even better (though admittedly, I ran a wire out through an air vent to get the base station out of the basement) and get a much better signal throughout our entire house and up to the 3rd floor as well.

    Another grand slam for Apple!

    • Written by from Boise

This router is simply amazing. The speed and range is crazy, but I'm most impressed with ease of setup. I upgraded from the previous generation Airport Extreme to this bad boy. Using the Settings app on my iPhone, I found the router and I was asked if I was replacing my old router. I said yes and it automatically moved my settings over from my old Airport and prompted me to plug in my wires and that was it. My network downtime was 38 seconds (yes, I timed it). This, along with a new 802.11ac adapter for my desktop and I went from an average of 160 Mbps to 866 Mbps. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!

I spent a lot of time researching the different routers because I was having issues with dropped connections and losing connections in certain areas of my house. I will mention my modem is in the worst possible place in my house, the back bedroom in the corner. With my old router, the only computer that had wifi beyond the living room was my Mac. When I was at the apple store purchasing my MacBook Pro, the salesperson informed me that an airport would be covered under my apple care. So I did some more research and since almost all of my wireless devices are apple I figured this would be the best move. Set up was extremely easy on my MacBook Pro and all other apple devices. I will say that trying to connect my Dell was a bit harder. I recommend downloading AirPort Utility for anyone who has a Windows running computer. Once I did it, there was only a few more steps that I needed to take. I'm pretty good with computers, so if you aren't connecting this to an apple computer and aren't really tech savvy, this may not be the best router for you. I have amazing range, took my computer to the backyard and still had 3 bars. Before also I would only be able to have two devices connected without seeing an issue with connectivity. As I'm writing this we have an iPod, iPad, Apple Tv, Dell Computer, and MacBook Pro all connected and the connection is perfect on all the devices. Moving forward I will be sticking with all Apple products!
