    By Far The Best!

    • Written by from Somers

I live in a house with a very long floor plan. I have struggled for years paying for the latest and greatest routers to cover entire home with no luck or at best intermittent coverage. After I bought apple TV I decided to open up the wallet and get one of these AirPort Extremes. I am glad I did! Simple to install if you follow the directions... Once up and running I have EXCELLENT wireless connection throughout the entire house! Highly recommend this product.

Be Warned Airport Extremes have a long history in Apple Support forums.

    • Written by from Phoenix

I bought an Airport Extreme expecting the normal web based integration interface and like the Airport analogy of.

    1. Windows is a Boeing 747 with generous amounts of space, but goes boom mid-flight.
    2. Apple is a silver concorde where the air stewards are all precogs and know what you want before you want it.
    3. Linux, FreeBSD; everybody assembles the aircraft on the runway, and after a bumpy start you are up to SCRAMJET speeds on your way to the nearest solar system.

    My Findings with 7.7.3 firmware.

    1. The airport extreme does not support NAT with other existing infrastructure such as a DHCP server of your own like Active Directory one. In order to get around this you have to go down a path of sticking a square in a round hole. i.e. The Device will even warn you that you have done this. Double NAT is the term it uses. But if you ask around its the only way around the problem because apple link NAT to what you want you NAT addresses to be.
    2. The firmware is so buggy that without setting IP6 settings to local-link only you will get iOS wireless devices dropping consistently even on the latest 7.7.3 firmware.
    3. There is no Web interface, like all apple utilities currently on OS X apple cannot keep there man pages consistent with the actual commands they rewrite from open source.
    4. The package documentation a little square pamphlet in the very ecologically unsound box is worthless. As a networking expert in IPv4 and IPv6 its well worthless.

iOS devices will not like the Airport extreme in a ActiveDirectory network. It simply will not work.

I am doing some further testing and if things continue to be unstable its back to BEST BUY with this as a record of my testing efforts.

    Best router ever...

    • Written by from Chicago

Similar to many this router is the best I have ever used. Very easy to set-up (about 5 minutes). Internet with this router is 25x faster than our old router! Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great router, definitely worth the money.

We bought an Airport 5 years ago and it worked flawlessly for five years. Now time to upgrade for more power in a big house with solid walls, and the upgrade took exactly 30 seconds. For those who can't figure out how to do it, just select it from the Airport Utility under Other Wifi Devices. Once installed the boost in speed is huge. Congratulations Apple another amazing device and now I look forward to another 5 trouble-free years.

I'm throwing away my Apple router

    • Written by from Charlottesville

I'm going to buy a new non-apple router.
I purchased a new modem but it wouldn't talk to my AirPort Extreme and extensive and long hours talking to Apple tech service ended with the same result, no connection.
I was conveniently disconnected and was thwarted from making the connection to the tech person again.

Don't buy Apple products if this is an example of their tech support.

    What's all the fuss !!??

    • Written by from Church Hill

There's pros and cons to everything in life, period. Ordered my Extreme on 8/5/15 and was on my doorstep 8/7/15. Opened the box, plugged in power and signal, followed the setup on my Mac (2011 OS X 10.7.5), and was surfing in 5 min. Have Charter internet, self tested at 59.11 Mbps. Hope this helps in your decision.

    Amazing Wireless Router

    • Written by from Marietta

I rarely write reviews but I just had to write a review for the Airport Extreme. I've had so many different brands of wireless routers (Asus, Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc) and they all begin to fail around the 9 month time frame. On many of them I was resetting them once or twice a week by the time they'd reached a year. I've now had my Airport Extreme over a year and a half and I've only ever reset it once (outside of a couple power-outages). This device is incredible, even without any AC devices connected to it. I usually have 10-15 devices connected at a time and never once experienced bad performance/signal. Always keeps up with everything going on and gives me the full 60mbps I pay for from Comcast, even wirelessly. Never going back to any of those cheap brands again! Apple delivers again!

I have recently purchased an Airport Extreme. I live in a medium sized brick and tile house and have often experienced extensive buffering whilst steaming HD movies over the Wi-Fi. I was initially apprehensive largely due the initial cost outlay but I now regret not buying one much earlier. It has made such big improvement to the home Wi-Fi speed particularly when streaming movies via LeLe and apple TVs. The modem/router I'm using is a Netgear DGN2000. I had always thought that the 802.11n Wi-Fi performance was OK but using the extreme just blows it away. The extreme is positioned a good 30 feet away (in a separate room with brick walls and corridor/doorway) from the apple TV but the performance increase is truly remarkable. I would definitely recommend the investment if you are considering upgrading your Wi-Fi performance. There is also a new 2015 MacBook pro in the house and the 802.11ac connection is very strong and fast. The set up was also very easy (5 mins). The Netgear DGN2000 is now just acting as modem feeding into the Airport Extreme. I'm very happy with the purchase. Regards

    Not for serious users

    • Written by from Dickson

Hands down, bar none, the worst networking device I've ever used. External drives become corrupted for no good reason after a few days. Printers will not stay connected for more than a few hours at a time (requiring hard resets of the entire system). It changes IP address assignments and random and constantly assigns the same address to several devices, causing collisions and general network disarray. I could go on and on. The bottom line is that it just doesn't work. Oh by the way, did I also mention that it's priced about 10 times higher than comparable equipment (that does work)?

Not Seamless - VERY TEMPERMENTAL - Disappointed in Apple

    • Written by from Richmond

It took me over an hour plus half an hour on the phone to set up my AirPort extreme. I was not doing anything wrong. The tech had me reset the system for the 4th time and do a bunch of convoluted things to finally get it to work with my MacBook Pro and iPhone. Then I went into the AirPort Utility to update security and the quirky system got an error and totally lost the AirPort. No way am going through the lengthy process again to reset it up. Who knows how many times the system will crash. I re-hooked my old Netgear router and everything was back to normal and speeds actually better. So disappointed in Apple!

    Best Router Ever!

    • Written by from Atascadero

We have a fairly large house, and our Wi-Fi signal was spotty with an old netgear router. We have a game room upstairs which used to get no signal at all. We purchased a Apple Airport Extreme and an Apple Airport Express, expecting to put the Express in that room to give it signal. We did in fact not need the express, and it is sitting plugged into that room upstairs, giving us even better signal. Amazing Router, recommend for people with big houses.

    Greatest Router...

    • Written by from CORAL SPRINGS

I have been trouble shooting my slow internet (AT&T UVERSE) wireless for almost two months now. They switched out the model/router combo twice, added a wifi booster, and still nothing. Until one AT&T technician told me about the AIRPORT EXTREME - Possibly The Greatest Router I have ever purchased. Apparently AT&T can not guarantee their wifi signals strength to customers using APPLE PRODUCTS...So if you are experiencing SLOW WIFI while using APPLE products, do yourself a favor and purchase an Airport. I went with the Extreme because I did not want to have this problem in the future... With super fast shipping from the Apple Store, easy installation and setup, my wifi sign is like no other. It is TEN times stronger and has a great range (in my back yard ~ 130ft away). Best Router EVER...

    Works like a champ!

    • Written by from Brick

I bought one of these in addition to having a Comcast modem/router. The Comcast router was ALWAYS dropping the connection and my MacBook and iPad wouldn't stay connected. I was constantly having to use my iPhone as a hotspot for my MacBook and iPad. Since I've set up the Airport Extreme, life has been wonderful. The range is much better and I haven't dropped the connection once. Also, the set up literally made me laugh out loud because it could not be any easier. It was so fast and simple. And it was just as simple to get my wireless printer to link up with the Airport Extreme. Just a note, the router does not include a CAT5 cable. If you have a bigger house, look into getting more than one of these routers to give yourself complete coverage.

Turning it off - not what I had hoped for

    • Written by from Tulsa

After 3 months of painfully sporadic wi-fi reception around my house I gave up. I turned it off for good and replaced it with a ASUS RT-AC68U. Now I get much better reception across my entire living space. The ASUS router is located in the same space as my Apple Airport Extreme was, so I chalk it up to a better radio and antenna circuit.

I think this unit would be great for a small home or apartment. It just couldn't handle the distances I needed it to cover.

    Awesome router, after issues resolved.

    • Written by from Largo

This router is very fast and has excellent range, much better than the Bright House Ubee it replaced. Out of the box, however, it did not work, which was quite the surprise and unexpected from an Apple product. After some research, it seems the default is for the device to generate private IP addresses. Changing settings from DHCP to DHCP and NAT, and changing the IP range from 10.xx to 192.xx resulted in flawless performance.

With AirPlay speaker in every room (6), 2 Apple TVs, 4 iPhones, 3 Macs, Xbox, Roku, Wink and misc other devices hitting the network, this AirPort Extreme handles it all. No more dropped packets, connections are maintained, bandwidth is amazing and everything "just works". Setup was 20 min, Comcast as ISP, used older extremes to extend network and a couple airport expresses to run speakers outside. Couldn't be happier. If you're thinking of upgrading "just do it" you will not be disappointed.

    AirPort Extreme

    • Written by from OFallon

I don't know how it is possible that this router has received anything less then 5 stars. I have charter Internet and have seen significant improvements in my internets speeds and reliability since buying this. I used to own netgear routers because that is what charter gave me, but the Internet would be slow or cut out at times. But with this AirPort Extreme that is not the case. I get substantially greater speeds then I ever did with netgears and a way more reliable connection. The router is probably the easiest thing I have ever set up too. I want to thank Apple for making such great products. They really are the leaders in innovation.

Avoid Apple Extreme at ALL costs

    • Written by from Seattle

I am usually a big Apple supporter, but my experience with the Apple Extreme router has been a disaster. I have spent 5 days trying to get it to work and have utilized my internet provider, AppleCare and the Apple store support team and still have not been able to get it to work. After reading the thread on Apple's website it appear that there have been problems with the airport products for years and Apple has not fixed the bug(s) yet. Shame on Apple. Shame, shame, shame. If you want a lot of headaches, by all means spend $200 on an Airport Extreme, otherwise purchase something else. If I could rate this with a negative number I most certainly would.
