    Exceeds expectations!

    • Written by from Savoy

I replaced a pretty good Linksys router with a new Airport Extreme and the enhanced performance is remarkable. I was waiting to purchase the Airport because I thought the enhanced performance would be mainly available when I began to use wireless ac devices. Based upon reviews I read here, I became convinced that wifi performance would be better even with wireless g and n devices. Well, the reviews were right! . My wireless download speeds increased by almost 75%, from 25 mbps to 44 mbps, without any change to my ISP service. (My wired desktop computers achieve download speeds consistently at 55 mbps via Comcast.)
I can only speculate about how much better it might get when I begin to use wireless ac devices; maybe equal to wired?

    One Word: Incredible

Best router I have ever owned. I replaced (1) 5th Generation Extreme and (2) network extenders with this one router. The distance coverage and signal strength is the best that Apple have ever produced. This product is worth $400. Purchase!

    Much More Range

    • Written by from Weston

I purchased this to replace an older airport extreme for the sole purpose of increasing the range and it worked very well. In the past I had tried airport express as a network repeated and wasn't sure it was increasing performance, but when I switched to the new airport my performance at the far end of the house increased to the same as in the near end (download speeds of 25Gbs - the tops of my FIOS speed - instead of 5 or 6). It's expensive for just a range extension, but I'm sure I'll take advantage of the ac network soon.

Dramatic increase in speed and range. definitely worth upgrading from any other router you currently own.

I get full signal and fast speeds all the way across the street at my neighbors with the new Macbook Air, And about half or more signal bars at same location on iPad mini. just awesome.

Amazing. Worked well with all devices including xbox 360 Slim

    • Written by from Nanuet

The setup was a smooth process and very simple. Was up and running within 10 mins. Download speeds and upload speed hands down improved. Connecting to xbox live was not a problem with an OPEN NAT.

Devices connected to my network include, 2 MBP's (wireless), an iMac (wired), Apple TV (wireless), 2 iPhones, iPad, and 2 smart phones. Heavy internet traffic is usually at night and after 2 weeks of use, I am amazed. All devices were streaming HD flawlessly and playing on heavy games such as Battle Field 3 online had no lag.

Overall, this product lives to the reviews imo. Great product!!

Excellent speeds throughout the house now. Highly recommended without reservation. Like getting new computers with dramatic speed increases. A must for video and surfing the internet. Mail downloads in a flash. Almost everything we do with our computers has been noticeably faster.

    Excellent job for design

    • Written by from SEATTLE

I never thought Apple will adapt such design, though the design has been used by others such as DLink. I am really satisfied with the product since I test it under the school network compared to my time capsule of previous generation. The download speed is almost equal since I only have macbook pro equipped with 802.11n not 802.11ac. However, there is big difference for the upload speed. The AC version is about 30% faster than the N version, which pretty amazed me. I am looking forward to seeing the truly AC speed when I upgrade my macbook pro some time later.

The reason for one star off is the incompatibility with my USB 3.0 portal external hard drive. It is formatted as Mac disk format and compatible with my old time capsule. The new airport extreme should be equipped with same compatibility though it has USB 2.0 interface stead of 3.0. So I guess I have to wait for Apple update the firmware to fix the bug.

By the way, I bought one from a guy for $125, which I feel so lucky to have such a deal.

    Major Speed+Range Bump, Easy Replacement

    • Written by from Victoria

After using two previous-generation AirPort Extremes in the house to try and get usable speeds at other end of house, we went from almost NO signal about 60 ft. away to hitting our broadband provider's speed cap from same location.

Second-generation iPads at far end of house sometimes would get NO signal at all, now they're easily hitting high 30mbps and MacBook Pro getting full max of provider's 48mbps from that location.

Was skeptical about the one-click "upgrade all settings from existing AirPort Extreme", having done a lot of configuration to our existing unit that I was reluctant to have to sit down and replicate, but it got everything, including our attached-drive permissions, etc.

Thanks for this AirPort Extreme upgrade, Apple. Helped keep my marriage happy.

    Problems with timed access control

    • Written by from abbotsford

I bought two of these 802.11ac/2013 units. I use the Timed Access Control (TAC) to limit access according to MAC addresses. I swapped my old extremes for these new ones and TAC does not work reliably. There is a glitch where if you have a long list of MAC addresses, say more than 10, then the unit has a random address recognition failure. If the problem MAC addresses are moved further up the list there is less of a problem, if they are toward the end of the list there is more of a chance of a problem. This results in computers which should have authority to use the wireless being denied access. I have spent about 6 hours on this problem, Apple senior tech support can't get to the bottom of it. I have put my old Airports back in. I am aware that other people are having similar problems. I am a long time Apple fan but these units are poor. I can replicate the problem with Mac Book Pros, Mac Book Pro Retinas, and iPads. Don't waste your money.

    Limited Configuration Options

    • Written by from Lawrence

Everyone should note that you can't change the last digit of the IP address of the router. The router will only let its IP be 192.168.x.1 10.0.x.1 or 172.16.x.1. If you have an existing network with static clients using something like as the router you will have to manually touch all clients to make this change. Big design flaw by Apple.

    Pretty but not very useful

    • Written by from Monroe

Pros: Great range and compatible with AC devices.

Cons: No way to tell the ip addresses of hard wired devices. No way that I can find to use a dynamic DNS service. In a high end 200 dollar router this is unacceptable. I think mine will be going back to apple.

Easy setup, better range, faster WiFi

    • Written by from Jaffrey

I bought this to replace an aging Time Capsule. Coverage around our house was spotty in some areas and as our family has grown, I've needed WiFi in the far reaches of the house. I bought the new AirPort Extreme hoping it would provide coverage without the need for two base stations.

This unit covers every corner of the house with a strong signal and was very easy to set up.

I don't have any ac wireless devices, but all our devices (iPhone, iPad and laptops) seem to have much faster internet access and file sharing.

I also like the guest network feature. We often have visitors and this makes it very easy for them to join (with or without a password).

Worthy upgrade from the Gen 5 Extreme

    • Written by from Toronto

I would recommend upgrading to the Gen. 6 from any other generation of Apple Extreme, including the Gen. 5. Page load speed on Safari appears to be noticeably faster and the download time on an iTunes movie is dramatically shorter. Set-up, of course, is an absolute breeze. My Macbook Pro w. Retina rapidly found the plugged-in station and launched Airport Utility (use latest version) with its extremely simple set-up protocol. If you have an existing wireless network, perhaps with a printer (as in my case) or other wireless peripheral, simply assign the current network name to the new Extreme base station and the peripheral(s) should all connect. A firmware upgrade was immediately signalled on the Extreme icon in the Airport Utility, (a red circle with the #1 in it), so ensure that you update the firmware. I hope this feedback helps.

    Day 1- Best Router Ever

    • Written by from Frederick

Coming from the 5th Gen AirPort Extreme, I was a bit skeptical. But after reading positive reviews on here, I took a chance. IT BLOWS THE 5TH GEN OUT OF THE WATER. I'm talking I have 56 Mbps download speeds from Comcast and the older model was sluggish. This one is like having 4G LTE in my house. Little to no hesitation. Lightning fast. Epic success.
