Avoid Apple Extreme at ALL costs

I am usually a big Apple supporter, but my experience with the Apple Extreme router has been a disaster. I have spent 5 days trying to get it to work and have utilized my internet provider, AppleCare and the Apple store support team and still have not been able to get it to work. After reading the thread on Apple's website it appear that there have been problems with the airport products for years and Apple has not fixed the bug(s) yet. Shame on Apple. Shame, shame, shame. If you want a lot of headaches, by all means spend $200 on an Airport Extreme, otherwise purchase something else. If I could rate this with a negative number I most certainly would.

    Fantastic line of routers.

I had the last gen version of the Airport Extreme (the Mac Mini shaped one) and loved it. It recently stopped functioning--I believe because of a recent brown out in our house--and I decided to replace it with this new model. Color me impressed. My old one did a really great job giving us a good solid wireless N signal two floors away, but this one is even faster and more solid.

Speaking generally though--these are the most solid routers I've ever owned. They never need to be restarted and they last forever. I highly recommend them. Power users or network admins may not find them to be the most versatile as far as options, but for the standard user, they're amazing.

Made all the difference, really like it

I was skeptical that this router would fix some of the range and throughput issues that I was having. I took a chance and was glad that I did. It extended the range over my previous router that Time Warner provided significantly. Throughput is great and the added bonus of wi-fi support for 802.11ac is fantastic. My iPhone 6 and Macbook Pro fly now and other legacy wi-fi enabled devices are working a lot better including two Roku 3s, Samsung tablet, Xbox One and other devices.

    So Easy

Set this up using my Macbook. Was the easiest router I have ever set up. Easier to set up than apples wireless keyboard and trackpad even, and those were really easy.

Very solid. Uptime for wireless is excellent

I bought the airport extreme to replace my badly behaving d-link (their top of the line model). The old one required me to power cycle it several times a day, so I knew its days were limited. The airport extreme has been a solid performer for me. I think setup was just about the easiest ever for me in a router. I used the airport utility on my iPhone and I was up and running in under 15 minutes. It just works!

Second Airport Extreme and absolutely love it!!

I replaced an older version of the Airport Extreme, a 2009 version, with a new version today - November 20th, 2014. I have a huge home all on one level so I have a couple of Airport Expresses around the house as well - newer versions that do not plug directly into the wall. It took me about 10 minutes to go from old to new with great signals throughout the house. The newer version seems to be much faster than the older one. Love these guys and would recommend them to everyone that needs to upgrade a home wireless network system no matter if you have Apple products or not. I have an old Windows PC and it also operates faster on the internet with the newer device. Worth the money in my opinion. By the way, the older version may have dropped off the internet once or twice in 5 years?? Been so long since it happened I do not remember. LOL!!

    Works great, lots of range

Bought this to replace my old d link n extreme router which had an unreliable connection (random disconnections). The airport extreme has more range, always stays connected and is very easy to set up.

    Easy to set up
    lots of range
    reliable
    no problems

Great for people who aren't nerds!

If you want a router that takes little to no configuration that will manage interconnecting a bunch of Apple hardware, this is your device. If you are setting something up for other people, family, or friends, who don't know how to use routers, and have Apple hardware, this is your device. Why? Because if you do it right, you wont need to ever help them with router problems again!

No, it isn't for advanced users, it isn't meant to be. If you want to tweak a lot of stuff, or other custom things look at routers that do that. Don't fault the device just because you didn't buy something that does what you want.

Guest Network is MAC-filtered like the primary network

If I set up a guest network it's because i want my guests to be able to connect easily. How stupid is it that the primary and guest networks share the same MAC address access list??? It means that in order to connect, guests have to be registered into my AirPort! Imagine the length of the list!
A decent product all in all, but really such a ridiculous oversight on the part of Apple for the most expensive wireless router out there is not acceptable. You can get £15 wireless routers that manage to get this one right!

When it works is great. But when it doesn't is a pain

Now, I am a big fan of apple.... and it brakes my heart to say bad things about the brand I love. The extreme works great, it connects to my iMac with 1300Mb/s, and sees all of my devices everywhere in the house, except my little apple TV. Well, almost, it sees the TV, but it does not like the colour or something, because every time I try to connect the Apple Tv (3 gen) to it, I fail. First it says that the network is recognised but Date and Time cannot be acquired from the router, and it fails to connect to iTunes. I tried all the possible solutions to the problem, non of them work. I had to buy a second router, connect it to the extreme, and wirelessly connect the apple tv to it. The inexpensive branded router did the job flawlessly. So, Apple, please, if you are aware of the problem, give us a fix.

It's ok, i'll leave it at that.

This thing sure isn't what i was hoping for, it a nice router and all but don't count on it giving you anymore range than it's predecessor. I was under the impression that it's big awkward size was due to a improve antenna, it isn't. I can't recommend to anyone to upgrade their old router to this.

Replaced my 1st Generation Time Capsule

My 1st generation Time Capsule was nearly 6/7 years old and was starting to show its age as far as sharing out my broadband so I decided to replace it with this and retire my Time Capsule to just back up duties.

So far the speed increase is unbelievable, if this one lasts as long as the one it replaced I will be very happy.

    Airport Extreme - Airport Express

Hi - I initially purchased a airport extreme, and it worked perfectly, but figured if one is good then more is better - NOT. I went out purchased another Extreme, and a airport express to cover my multi level home. After many calls, and software updates, they don't like to play together. Meaning, I hard wired the 2 extremes together and extended my wireless network, and this is when the problems started. I would suggest the product as a single function device, and avoid networking them together,

    Amazing Print Server Capabilities

The router works amazing as a print server for the small business world. We were able to quickly setup Xerox and Canon printers, which made the process of network printer amazingly simple. Love this machine!

    Awesome router

Replaced my piece of &*#% Linksys router with this one. what a difference. I haven't had a device drop a connection since. I'm getting better download and upload speeds. the range has also increased significantly. the only thing I didn't like about it was the fact that it wouldn't recognize my NTFS NAS. I probably should have done a little more research, but that's life. I'd recommend this router to anyone. I also couldn't get a regular printer that didn't have AirPrint on it to work through the router.

    Airport Extreme and airport express

I just installed these 2 and the internet is lightning fast with full bars around my very large house. Very. Very satisfied apple customer. By the way, we are an apple product only household.

Range not improved from last gen

I bought this one to replace a last generation model because there were 2 spots in my house (I don't have a big house - average size at best) where coverage was sporadic and unreliable. I thought that the claimed "better range" of this one would help since I just needed maybe 10 more feet to work perfectly. Well, after installing it in the same exact spot, coverage is exactly the same, or at best maybe 5% better, but not enough for me. So, I ended up using the old Extreme as an extender, which works great, but I was planning on selling it... Oh well... Also, I followed the menus to migrate the settings from the old one to the new, and the setup quit at the end with an unknown error, and I had to reset the new Extreme and do it the regular way. Another problem, the new one does not allow you to use the 5ghz channels for the wifi "n" only, which I used on the old one and it helped me segregate wifi between the old ipads and the new ipads/iphones. Not an option anymore.

Pros: Looks great, easy to set up
Cons: Settings migration did not not work, range is not better, missing wifi channels options
