    It Rules, don't understand all the Negativity!

    I bought my AE about 9 months ago. Before that in my house I had a Time Capsule Router (the square flat one) that is at least 6 years old (Ive lost count) and an Airport Express, that I bought at the same time.

    I connected, added my AE to the network, killed the WIFI on my old AirCapsule Router (so I didn't have a slower system competing as they are next to each other and connected via LAN. I kept my old Airport Express.

    It took me more than usual to set up this HodgePodge of different era Apple Wireless devices, but that's my fault as I should have used Airport Utility from the begining. Total was about 5 hours over a couple of days.

    I have a 3 Story house, of 3,600sqft. I have my AE connected to my Timecapsule on the 2nd floor. I have my Airport Express in my den on the 2nd floor. I have 2 Apple TV's 2n generation one on the 1st floor and one on the 2nd floor, directly connected to my AE through LAN.

    We have 3 MacBook Pros on wireless, 4 iPhones and 2 iPads. We have horrible cell connection in the area so all phone calls go through WIFI.

    On top of that we run a lot of streaming, airplay from the phones and iPads. I have never, ever had a problem. My connections are fast, and even my printer an old HP connected to the Airport Express through its ethernet port works great through wireless and whomever wants to print on the network.

    I really suggest that all those complainers, the 1 and 2 star people, read their instructions before complaining, since human nature being as it is, you have to dilute all those complaints by a hefty percentage, as you can attribute most of them as not flowing instructions, getting frustrated and blaming someone else for their incompetency, and in this car it being Apple that is blamed.

    Apple products are great, as per my experience, I have assembled old Apple equipment with new, and it works like a charm. The fact I have Apple wireless products that are over 6 years old is testimony to the integrity of the product and the company.

    Great expansion to my network

    I had to upgrade as my ISP's cable modem with wireless only supported 30 devices. With 45 users at the time, it was difficult to get connected with devices that were taken out of the home and then back later on. I got an AE, turned off bridge mode, setup the same SIDS with the same password and now everyone can connect just fine. I do have to restart the extreme on the rare occasions when the ISP changes the firmware in their Arris cable modem ... the AE won't re sync without a quick reboot. Added a second one later when a lot more devices were added to the LAN.

    The WAN has 150mbps, and we regularly get that and up to 170mbps performance now. Didn't need/want Time Capsule as I have several WD Mycloud NAS devices. Everyone in house has iPhones and iPads and printers - both wireless and AirPrint, and each tv also has an apple TV, also a number of PCs (Windows 10 and Windows 7 and ubuntu and redhat Linux, and 1 old Unix server).

    Haven't even seen a pixelated screen in 6 months, although 4 Apple TVs are regularly streaming. I do most configuration changes and admin reviews using the Airport Utility on my Air 2 or iPhone SE, and rarely using a Windows 10 laptop. Now up to over 70 LAN devices including HomeKit devices.

    As all LAN work is using the Apple Extreme, most in-house traffic has no impact on the ISP data limit now; in the past, even LAN traffic seemed to use WAN data capability some of the time. Now, my iTunes movies on NAS only seems to access the WAN for DRM verification.

    Great when it's running and you can connect to it

    Basically, I have to reset it constantly. For some reason my mac decides it can not connect to it anymore. Only way to fix is is reset the whole thing and reconfigure. This really stinks. Not a great product IMO.

    Slow Download Speed | Obsolete Technology | Horrible Support

    I purchased this 2 months ago and it has been a nightmare:

    • Download speed is consistently below 15 MBPS (I get 190 MBPS if I plug-in directly to my cable modem.)
    • Apple has not updated the underlying technology for years -- and it shows. (My fault! We used to be able to trust Apple...)
    • When I (finally) got hold of their technical team, they essentially told me to p**s-off.

    Sad truth is that Apple has totally lost it's edge and is trading on it's reputation while selling incredibly inferior products -- their AirPort Extreme is a great example.

    Learn from my (expensive -- they don't take returns) mistake and look at Eero, Asus, Onhub instead; they are much much better products...

    They Were Right....

    They were right. It does drop out, and usually at the most inconvenient times. So annoying, especially while streaming a minor (or so it seems) Olympic sport that only gets part of an hour on tv. Now that I've found a workaround with the Web, it's not nice to have to do it all again to get back to my stream! I hope Apple will send an update to fix this. Soon! I'm truly not used to getting a bad product from Apple, and this is making me nuts!
    It pretty though, a different height does make the tabletop look better.

    Easy to use right out of the box!

    The AirPort Extreme practically set itself up after I connected it to my Verizon FIOS router/modem and opened the airport setup using my iPhone. Since then whenever I move it sets up the network on its own. Amazing. Also it's probably the best range and speed I've ever had from a router.

    Unhappy with the longevity

    I've had two of this model. The first one lasted a year before the WAN port died. The replacement lasted two years before the same port died. Both times the Apple Geniuses tried to blame a lightning strike, but I'm not convinced. I have an older AE model that's been in constant use for six years, and an old Netgear router that's been constantly in use for ten years. Both these routers have survived everything nature has thrown at them. When the Genius offered me only a 25% discount on a new AE I decided to cut my losses and buy a different brand. That really hurts when you're a lifelong Apple user and fan.

    works fine

    i have a BT hub/router. Problem was signal kept dropping out and coverage poor.
    So, as a mac household, it seemed sensible to disable the wireless function on the bt router and connect an APE to disseminate the wifi signal. I have 3 kids & a spouse constantly on the home network. Dead easy to set up (including parental controls). The system works great, looks great (i hate those tacky looking things with antennae sticking up) & we've not looked back. thank you apple.

    3 TB version. 3 years of flawless daily use

    Used as one of my three Time Machine backups and to house many videos as a router, which is only UAB 2.0 in my model has performed flawlessly for the three years that I've owned it. I/m backup nut so I also have a six TB Synology 2 bay server and a 2 or 3TB (I don't remember, WD My Book for Mac and Time Machine backs up to all of them. I honestly don't understand the negative reviews about this product. We have a fairly large house and did by an range extender but it was no problem. In three years, the router has never malfunctioned. I don't know what more one could ask for or expect.

    IMHO you may buy this product with the utmost of confidence.

    Poor range and frequently drops out.

    Far worse signal than the standard iiNet/Belkin unit sitting next to it. Worse it may look pretty, but it has a fan in the base (i.e. moving parts to wear out). The epitome of form over function. Even the older model Airport Extreme performed better.

    It supports 5GHz 802.11 AC, but my iPhone 6s will never use it because the signal is so much worse than the 2.4GHz 802.11n signal. This is especially bad given that the 5GHz range is clear of competing signals while every router around us competing in the 2.4GHz range.

    Don't waste your money on this one.

    Great product, but . . .

    Like most Apple products, the AE routers are designed to perform very well, look great, and be very easy to configure and use. These routers can be trouble free for years. We are on our third generation AE router now, and the simplicity and reliability has kept us coming back. That's the good news.

    The bad news, is there are a lot of setting options and complexities to AE routers that are not well documented by Apple, at least not that I can find. Check out this Apple Support Forum to see what I mean: Airport Extreme and Cox Internet IPv6.

    This forum has been very active for many months, with no contributions from Apple engineers, which is what is really needed. Many users on this forum had to change router settings from the default settings to maintain stable internet connections on their Airport networks after their ISP implemented IPv6 support. It turns out there are undocumented complexities about AE networks, and Apple's approach to the IPv6 transition, that many have stumbled upon. Once you've strayed from default settings, it can be difficult to find your way back, as there is no Apple documentation I can find about some of these settings. The more devices you have in your network, the more complicated things can become. Third party blogs have been very active in discussion of these settings, but it would be nice to hear from the source more often.

    Also, be warned, if you need multiple AE routers to cover a large area, things get more complex, and the Apple documentation for the current generation of AE routers can be hard to find.

    Yea Not Impressed

    Speed is very good, but I have a very solid plan with my provider. I bought this because while sitting on the front or back porch of my 2k sq ft home I was having difficulty connecting, it was spotty at best. No improvement at all with this device. Works great inside the house, not well outside. I was expecting so much more from Apple.

    Works great. 2tb is fine but get 3tb if you can afford it

    I got this Airport Extreme to get to the newest generation of WiFi and for backup. I had older, smaller versions and they always worked fine so I expected the same. Well it did work perfectly until one update but that was figured out quickly and easily. I just found out that if I copy all of my iTunes to a portable drive, I can connect it to the AP Extreme and access them there. I have 40k tracks so I need the space on my MacBook Pro. I have been an Apple geek for sometime now and plan to stay there. I use the newest MacBook Pro, 9" iPad Pro, iPhone 6, Airport Extreme 2tb, and will keep expanding.

    Apple's Router's are awful after of 15yrs of using them.

    I will never buy another Apple router.. They are awful.. I only did because I have everything Apple.. Don't do it..The router barely goes 40ft with no obstructions.. I've used other routers and they are light years better than Apple's.. My internet service is screaming but Apple's router just slows it or cuts it out all the time.. Don't waste your money...

    Solid Performance

    Replaced a 5th Gen that still worked fine but wanted to add the additional band available with this unit. I run 4 extenders via 4 Airport Express and the transition to the new AirPort Extreme was flawless. I have used all sorts of routers in the past but once I moved to Apple AirPort Extreme life was grand!

    I highly recommend this product to anyone who wants great coverage and stability. These devices are built by Broadcom to Apple specs and quality standards.

    Easy to setup and great performance!

    I decided to stop paying Comcast monthly rent for my wireless modem/gateway.I purchased a Motorola Modem found on the Comcast "compatible devices" list from Amazon and bought the Airport Extreme. I put the switching out process off for a few days fearing I would need to read manuals and then possibly call Motorola or Apple for support. But I found that my just unplugging the Comcast device and putting the cable into the modem, all the lights on it came on. I then connected to the Air Port and went online and found my new network popping up. It walked me through a couple steps and in a couple minutes I was online and so far my speed seems to be about 10 to 15 % better when I check it on "Speedtest" web sites...even Comcast's own site.And the Apple router is so much nicer to look at than Comcast's as well!

    (BTW I am typing this on a MacBook 12 inch I picked up last week...no more typos caused by my fat fingers with this amazing wide key keyboard!)

    Impressive gain over previous generation

    I updated to this version of Airport Extreme from the previous generation. It solved a lot of connectivity issues. My Apple TV and Tivo units are downstairs and on the opposite side of the house from the wifi transmitter. The speed bump and stability of connection improved so dramatically with this new unit that I can see movies, etc... instantly and flawlessly in HD. Areas that previously could not connect now connect and signal strength is better. Nice job!

    Looks like I should've read the reviews first! Bought this a little while back, (I'm sure out of warranty now!), and while it worked as hoped for a year or so, I am now in the same sunken ship as the rest of you. I cannot go a day without having to re-boot the whole system, and for a while, it was several frustrating times a day. I replaced my modem thinking that was the problem, but after removing the router from the system and seeing that it worked without having to unplug and re-plug it in, I'm realizing that this is the problem. $200.00 down the drain, @#$%%$#!

    I'll be going back to the drawing board and buying a new one, but of a different manufacturer of course.
