Worked well for 17 months, then died.

I liked the AirPort Extreme for 17 months. It covered most of our house with a single device and it was very reliable. Around 17 months it started to power down. I suspect an issue with the power supply, Apple has a long history of wonky power supply problems.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's eventually a recall program. I purchased it with an AMEX card, so I'll now see how good their extended warranty program is.

In the meanwhile, sadly, I've ordered ANOTHER Airport Extreme. (Sigh.) I really couldn't find a better option -- Eero is very expensive and unproven from a startup that may die. Google's hardware is outsourced and of uncertain quality.

The Airport Express has been very reliable. If you can make do with the Express I'd recommend it over the Extreme. If you need the coverage and buy the Extreme be sure to have an extended warranty credit cards (I think some countries have 2 years, that's enough) or pay extra for Apple Care.

    Great Range Extension

We moved to a larger house. Older 6 Gen Apple Extreme on first floor and iMac in opposite side of house in finished basement. First floor reception near old router was good at 160 Mbps download, but iMac in basement was only about 6 Mbps download. Thought we'd have to put in a WiFi extender to get signal on that side of house. Instead, got this new Airport Extreme. That made a big difference. Basement iMac went from 6 to 120 Mbps download with new router. That was the only change. No WiFi extender needed. Great range increase and coverage. Great Router!

    Unreliable after year and half

This was a nice product for a little over a year but now it constantly drops the connection. I have to unplug it and plug it back in daily. I thought I was having internet connection issues with my cable provider but turns out it is the airPort Extreme. Too bad, I like apple compatibility and simplicity but the reliability for this product is not there. I do not recommend this.

    AWESOME!!!!

This is an amazing, easy set up, stylish (no ugly antennas), most powerful router I have ever owned. Range is superb in my 2300 sq ft. Single story home!!
Wifi connection to all my devices are always at full strength. Down and uploading movies is super fast and smooth!

Bought a second Apple extreme for the garage. It's even easier set up because all you need is to plug the power and let the 2 pair up. NO 2nd Ethernet connection wire needed. It's that super easy! Not only do I have strong wifi connection in my house, I also have strong connection in my garage and back yard. Perfect for the 2 places I spend the most time in!

    Highly recommend.

Do Not Buy!!!! Drops signal all the time!!!

I bought this around a year ago. Had problems then. Contacted apple support. They walked me through a few thing. It work Great for around 6 months. The stupid thing keeps dropping connection. Ive done all kinds of resets etc... I had a Netgear for over 6 years with no problems. I just wanted to get an extreme since everything else I had was apple. I repeat do not buy one of these! biggest waste of money even for an apple fan!!!!!

    Fixes all wifi issues

I love this device. We have been Apple fans for so long, I can't believe we overlooked this product. We have had constant wifi issues with nearly 20 clients on our third party access point/router. I have been told by reputable authorities that too many clients can be difficult for a consumer wifi access point. Using the same router, turning off it's wifi, and using the Apple Extreme has solved all problems. I can now get great wifi in parts of the house which were previously dead. And speeds have improved everywhere else. This product is the most overlooked product on Apple's whole product line. IT IS AWESOME!

    worth the extra $

After some concern about the high price I bought this unit to replace my Linksys EA4500. The ea4500 was considederd a great router but we never got good coverage and the speeds were not great. I must have spent 10 hours over the last while playing with settings and turing things on and off trying to get this thing to work as advertised. As usual, you get what you pay for! The Extreme was up and running in 5 minutes, coverage was spectacular and we were finally getting the speeds we pay for (Cogeco). Our family has 4 iphones, 3 macbooks and a few ipads. File sharing is now a (simple) reality with this great little device. Buy this if you want a router that works as advertised, especially if you are a mac household.

    Surprisingly weak Guest Network security

The Airport Extreme is a high-performance WiFi router, but it has a surprising weakness in the Guest Network: ZERO support for any form of client Wireless/AP isolation mode. For any public setting, like a library, coffee shop, retail store, this means that any wireless device that connects to the Guest Network can see all the other devices on the Guest Network, including the manufacturer of the device, address, and other features.

The lack of client Wireless/AP isolation mode is a surprising security weakness in an Apple product -- especially because many competitors support "Wireless Client Isolation" in product that cost less than half the price of the Airport Extreme.

I bought an Airport Extreme for use in a public art gallery, but it's being returned to Apple due to this surprising and disappointing security weakness.

    Extending network

While our house is not that big, the primary Airport Extreme signal was intermitant at the other end and up stairs. The signal was not consistant because of a 24" stone wall in the middle of the house.
Got a second Extreme since I figured it would be most compatible and easier to hook up.
Very good idea.....to get the network set up and the two talking......took less than a minute.......max strength signal now upstairs!!

This product needs to be FIXED!

The Airport Extreme goes off to LA LA land. It has a green light and looks normal but devices on wi-fi or wired will not go onto the internet. This happens when devices have been connected a while or overnight. As an example my iPhone will be connected and working on Wi-Fi and then the next morning I have to turn off and back on Wi-Fi on the phone to use the internet. Very frustrating.
My older Airport Extreme works great. I upgraded with hopes of a stronger signal to reach my garage. FAIL.

I am hoping Apple will release an update to fix this issue.

    Airport Extreme - Limited Range

I replaced a Time Capsule (5 years old) that worked pretty good but thought I go for a more up to date product. The range on this is not good and much worse than a Time Capsule. From Home Office to Family Room (50 feet) it is very slow. Laptop wi-fi poor and hardly streams a movie. I had to move to the Family Room...problem solved. I'm very disappointed.

    I echo everything said here.

I was so excited to add AirPort Extreme as a new router and use my older Airport Express as an extender. I was able to get the New AE connected properly once. As I tried to add the older Airport Express to extend the connection AND have access to AirPlay which the Extreme does not support I lost the connection and it never worked again. talked to Xfinity and read multiple articles. It will not talk to the modem. I invested close to five hours on this. Will move on and search a different option. It's going back to Apple next week.

    Disappointing, aggravating, unreliable

I've been a HUGE Apple fan for over twenty years. The latest Airport Extreme, unfortunately, has been nothing but a huge source of frustration. Have spent long hours on phone with tech support, weekly resets/restarts/reboots.........etc....etc.....Wifi reliability has been an ongoing issue that Apple has failed to acknowledge or address. Check the Apple forums if you need further evidence.
For now, I've switched to a Motorola/Arris product, which is yet to have issue. Am hopeful that Apple can correct their wifi woes at some point, but am not holding my breath.

    Best Router I've used

I own quite a few Apple products so far (Apple TV, MacBooks, iMac, IPhones) and this is one of the best apple products. I was having trouble with my modem and router from Time Warner. It kept disconnecting ever time my iMac went to sleep and would disconnect from my Apple TV. I finally bought this and a different modem. The set up was easy, less than 5 minutes. My computer hasn't disconnected and it's been faster than ever. Worth the investment!

Extremely fast, USB connection is BS

What do you expect, the rating is 802.11ac. This router is naturally fast. The sad thing is, Apple upgraded the antennas and stuff to 802.11ac, but forgot to upgrade the USB port on the router, which is a huge bummer. If the USB port was 3.0, things would run a lot faster when using a shared disk, but apple says no. USB 2.0 is still present on this base station and using the shared disk is very slow and gimmicky. It takes a whopping 5 DAYS to transfer 2 GB of pictures onto the shared disk. If I directly plug the disk into my Mac it would take only a single minute. APPLE SERIOUSLY YOU ARE KILLING SO MANY USEFUL POSSIBILITIES WITH A SINGLE USB PORT! Upgrade it please!

    Great buy

I upgraded my old Airport Extreme to Apple Time Capsule that didn't work, so I bought the new Airport Extreme which was wonderful but decided to get back to Time Capsule and give it another try and it worked beautifully. They are essentially the same product, the difference is of course the wireless HDD on the time capsule. Both work very well as routers, very fast and reliable. True, they have a history of trouble but I hope Apple has worked out the glitches. Very satisfied.

Easiest most awesomely fast network ever!

I bought the Airport Extreme today after my old (not apple) router keeled over. In five minutes, I plugged my cable modem, printer, and one wired computer in, plugged in the extreme, it walked me through setup, and in 2 minutes flat I was up and running on all 10 devices in the house. My speed is topping out at 60mps download, only because my older cable modem is limiting me. Time for a new modem!

Being in IT, I know the hardest thing still even in the middle of all our wonderful tech options is the communications/networking piece. Usually, after turning the air blue and working for hours, I can finally bring up a network. Well, as usual, Apple streamlined everything, put it in a pretty package, and made it simple simple simple. I can't say enough good things!

If you are hesitating because it seems hard to set up a network, go straight to apple for this little beauty. Merci beaucoup Apple!

ps I am in no way affiliated with Apple. Just a very satisfied multiple times customer

    Fantastic Product

I had been renting a NetGear router/modem combo from Comcast for the last few years and it was seriously struggling to reach all the corners of my house. I had to use my phone's 4G network in my room because it was so weak. On top of that, airplay was problematic with my apple tv's and I would need to reset my whole system almost every week. I bought this product, plugged it in to the wall, connected it to the modem with an ethernet cable, set it up in about 2 minutes, and all of my wifi problems were SOLVED! My internet speeds are literally three times faster and I the range has extended from about 30 feet to easily over 60 feet. Airplay always works perfectly now and I haven't had to reset my media server or anything in several weeks. I am so incredibly happy with this product.

    By Far The Best!

I live in a house with a very long floor plan. I have struggled for years paying for the latest and greatest routers to cover entire home with no luck or at best intermittent coverage. After I bought apple TV I decided to open up the wallet and get one of these AirPort Extremes. I am glad I did! Simple to install if you follow the directions... Once up and running I have EXCELLENT wireless connection throughout the entire house! Highly recommend this product.
