Huge performance increase over 3rd Gen Extreme!

I was reluctant to purchase the latest version of Airport Extreme. Upon finally getting one, I was very pleasantly surprised! Big range increase and a very noticeable difference in throughput! With no other adjustments but replacing my 3rd Gen MIMO Extreme with the latest, my transmit rate went from 108 to 270. That's more than double! On Time Warner Cable's Extreme 50MBs, I felt a huge power burst in performance. I feel validated in my purchase. If you've been on the fence or struggling with some questionable performance, give this one a try! I think Apple finally got it perfected.

    The best router ..

After struggling with umpteen Bell and Rogers modems/routers which provided limited coverage we tried DLink. The Dlink router was intermittent so we returned that product. One of my colleagues suggested the AirPort Extreme. So easy to set up and now we finally have coverage everywhere.
Apple … your products deserve all the accolades.

    Worth every penny

I've tried several brands of routers and had difficulty with streaming HDTV content and signal strength in remote parts of the house. All those problems are gone now. I added a gigabit switch to plug in several devices including Sonos, VOIP, etc. It all works great.

Great replacement for my old Time capsule but slow HD throughput.

I Bought the new Airport Extreme to replace my old Time Capsule/router. The coverage area in the house is much greater and the speed enhanced, so I'm happy for that. However, Apple hasn't improved the Time Machine backup throughput for the attached USB2 Hard drive. I did one total backup of my system with an HD attached to the USB2 port of the iMac 24 and then a system backup to the HD attached to the Airport Extreme. The backup through the Airport Extreme took twice as long. I consider that a failure on Apple's part, that's why I only gave it a four star.

Don't buy if you are a gamer

After using this wireless router for over a month I finally gave up on 11/16/2013. The range on this router is terrible and my multiple devices on my network including iOS laptop, ipad, iphone, Roku, and other devices all periodically lose their connectivity no matter how close in proximity I am to the router. Also, if you are a big gamer you will notice quite a bit of lag/latency in the connection while playing first person shooters. Sadly, my xfinity/comcast wireless router performs better (greater range and consistent connectivity) than this $200 product from Apple. I would recommend buying a router from Cisco, Linksys or another manufacturer that specializes in making routers/switches. Sorry Apple, but you failed with this product. Hope this helps other people avoid buying this device.

    Awesome router

Replaced my piece of &*#% Linksys router with this one. what a difference. I haven't had a device drop a connection since. I'm getting better download and upload speeds. the range has also increased significantly. the only thing I didn't like about it was the fact that it wouldn't recognize my NTFS NAS. I probably should have done a little more research, but that's life. I'd recommend this router to anyone. I also couldn't get a regular printer that didn't have AirPrint on it to work through the router.

    Not For Power Users

This is a great router if all you need is access to Facebook. HOWEVER, if you're a power user of any sort this router simply won't cut it. Unbelievably it lacks support for SNMP and the latest AirPort Utility is stripped of all the useful features. You won't be customizing or doing anything interesting with this router. I returned within the 14 day no-questions-asked period.

For this product line (without SNMP) Apple has officially given up on small business and power users.

    Be Advised!

Be advised! This 3X increase in speed only applies to the 802.11 ac network. Unfortunately, the 802.11 ac network is only available on MacBooks, Imac, and MacBook Air. I almost made a buying mistake thinking that I would get additional speed with my Ipad and this router. Wrong!

    Works Perfectly

This router works flawlessly with our 150Mbps connection. Breeze to set up. The only thing missing is the audio out from the Express. Not a deal breaker. We have both and love them.

Product description incomplete re USB port

The web router works very well.

However, the USB port does not. (1) it requires an external hard drive with its own power source - NOT SPECIFIED. (2) it requires an external hard drive formatted in a particular way - NOT SPECIFIED.

The WEB SITE PRODUCT DESCRIPTION SHOULD BE CHANGED !!!

Apple is working with me to overcome these problems.

They sent me a 4-hub device that doesn't do what they said it would.

Now they are sending me an external hard drive so I can re-format my data without having to wipe out all files on my current external hard drive.

Lots of trouble & time for me, plus expense to Apple.

    No USB 3.0

    Works great but...

Pretty fast it has stronger connection than the airport extreme (N) but i don't know how long mine will last because of the the packaging i dropped mine on the floor so that may have shortened the life of this $200 marvel. I don't know what genius thought of this packing but all i have to say is we miss you STEVE JOBS :(

    SNMP function No longer there

Apple stop support for SNMP function. If you want to monitor new AirPort Extreme Base Station by SNMP, you are out of luck.

and Apple, Please mention this fact on your product Information.

    Excellent router!! A definite BUY!!

I have a single story 2500 sq foot house with a separate detached living area (built off the garage), so there's a wide area of coverage needed with older thick walls. We area an apple family - with a dozen clients (iMacs, Mac Books, iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs, PS3, etc.) needing wifi coverage. (I was also using a new Airport Express to extend my network into the detached loft).

I had upgraded to Time Warner's Ultimate Internet service (50 Mbps), but I was only getting the high speed on an iMac that was physically connected to my old Airport router via ethernet. I was having to reboot my router more than once a day to get the speeds to pick up from horrible to simply passable - Netflix movies would stop streaming - kids were screaming - it wasn't pretty.

I researched all the new high end AC1900 routers (Netgear Nighthawk R7000, Asus RT-AC68U), and I have to admit I was tempted to finally drop my long term reliance on Apple Airport products. Then I remembered that the Apple Airport had always been so easy to use and I don't need to break into my router to configure it in any non-standard way, so after reading some decent reviews - I went back to my Apple roots and bought the new Airport Extreme (w/AC).

I don't have any AC clients yet, but I can say this: I was able to swap out the router and have a new network up and running in less than 60 seconds flat. I used the old network name and every device automatically reconnected to the network without having to do anything.

I am now getting 50 Mbps on my Mac Book Pro (n) - when previously I had only been getting 5 Mbps! The increased range is incredible too - reaching full strength everywhere now where it hadn't before.

Conclusion - if you're a multiple Apple user like me and have an existing airport that's causing your internet to become sluggish - and your family's patience at it's limits - stop reading about all those other routers and buy this one.

    Best of the best

Apple released this very well in time when my Linksys E4200 died on me, i thought that was the best router, this is my first apple router and its easy to setup, wide range, better speed and airport utility app compliment everything, if you are serious about your home of work network then don give any second thought, quality never comes cheap.

    Best thing since sliced bread

We had a 2007 AE and were getting increasingly frustrated with it - lack of range in the 5GHz mode, cutting out when the microwave was used in the 2.4GHz mode (and even on the 2.4GHz band it only barely reached the far corners of the house and not strongly). It wasn't simultaneous dual band, so we had to choose one evil or the other. So, I bit the bullet and bought the new AE and WOW - am I ever glad I did! Our transmit rate is now about 4-5X what it was in any given location and things are generally zippier all round. No more interference from the microwave, either. The older devices work, the newer ones are as fast as can be and the range is wonderful. All good!

Increased Coverage in My Home, and Improved Video Streaming

Purchased this unit to replace my 4th generation Airport Extreme. I'm impressed by the increased range in my home. I have this unit placed in my second floor office, and I get increased signal strength as shown in the settings on my Apple TV on the first floor vs. my prior router. I also love the smaller footprint design which takes up less space. And best part of all is the easy setup (can even do it from my iPhone or iPad) using the Airport Utility. Like all Apple products I own, great design, build quality, and hassle-free setup.

    Pretty but that's about it.

I bought this router because it was "server grade" and "the best I could get". Fast setup which is really the only positive. Other than that slow speeds compared to my 3 year old Cisco router which beat it in every speed comparison. So back to the shop it went. I'll buy something more suitable for all wireless products not one that just favours apple products. Oh and if you have a ps3 or xbox. Look elsewhere not very compatible.

    Amazing!

This replaced my old linksys router. All I can say is WOW! This is leaps and bounds ahead of any other router I've ever used. I actually get 1mb more than I pay for with this router! Being able to set up a guest network is a nice feature also.
