AirPort Extreme is Great--when it works

I am now (you might say stupidly) on my third AirPort device. I have chosen them because everything else in the house is Apple (MacBooks, TV, iPads, iPhones, etc), and it eases the setup and compatibility. The Extreme is wonderful when it is working --- the signal is fast, powerful, and far-reaching. However, I have yet to have one last more than about 18 months. Can't believe that Apple is building such expensive devices that have such poor longevity.
Great product as long as it is working, but short-lived.
Will move to a different brand when this one crashes.

    Broken piece of junk!

I got this to replace my 3-4 year old airport express and well..... There is something wrong if the tiny little airport express sends out a better signal than this thing... But here's the strange part... The signal strength is amazing but the bandwidth is non existent.... I would get 95% signal with -60 to -75 dBm from any ware from 20-60 feet but only get 100-300 kbps, as for my tiny little friend, the signal is lower about 40-60% VS 95% same with the dBm about -75 to -90 but I get far better bandwidth up to 300-400 Mbps at the same range... (Local network activity) and they were on the same channel (11) with no one else on that channel or 3 channels around it so something with this router is just messed up...

    So FAST!!!

my old medialink was newer than the AirPort Extreme when I bought it. I finally started the transition to all apple about a year ago and the router is one of the last pieces to get swapped out. I had no idea how much faster, more stable and reliable a router could be! Using the same cable modem and ISP, my AirPort Extreme is 4 times faster than my medialink was. If I would have just spent the money then, I would have had a router that is still state of the art 2 years later instead of owning this medialink paperweight. Penny Wise Pound Foolish - spend the money now and own a router that'll hold up over time!!

5 star awesome product makes magic

I have a 100ft Ethernet chord running along the baseboard of my living room, dining room, and kitchen and pvc piped 4 inches under the ground for about 50 ft to my back house and have this baby connected. It gave me signal strength that one could say maybe had taken a viagra, very strong. It covers 1200 sq ft made completely of bricks and it goes through all walls I get the 2.4 strength perfectly. Well worth the money especially with the Barclay card. Plus this thing looks amazing. It's so slick, it makes me drool. I have my PS4 Xbox360 lan wired in and I use my MacBook Pro flawlessly on the wifi. I phones work well I'm using 200/200 TW cable internet.

DESIGNERS I KNOW THERE ISNT MUCH MORE TO OFFER FOR A 7TH GENERATION BECAUSE THIS THING IS PERFECT BUT IT SHOULD HAVE BLUE TOOTH CAPABILITIES FOR MUSIC AND AN AUDIO OUT JACK. IT WOULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE FOR CONVIENIECES AND MAKING THIS THING A BUILT IN AUDIO BLUETOOTH RECEIVER.

    Outstanding Performance

Installed this recently and have yet to be disappointed. the range is incredible, i have a 9 room house and a 2 acre yard and i walked around the perimeter watching a youtube video and never once did the video hiccup, stutter, or buffer even at the farthest point away from the unit.
my only regret is not buying one sooner .

Apple Airport Extreme Does NOT work!

I bought this useless piece of junk because I like all of my Apple things. I felt that I was getting Apple Quality. WRONG! This thing has never worked right! I had a tech come in to help me set up my wireless, and it worked for a little while. Now, if I want to do a backup (the "automatic" does not work) I have to unplug it from the wall and replug it back in. The device keeps saying 'can't find the device' even though it shows up on the screen! Like the other reviewers, my gizmo is about 18 months old and if I want an in-house back-up device, I will most likely have to buy another one. Hopefully the Cloud works, because this piece of junk sure doesn't. Apple, you should be ashamed to slap your logo on this junk.

    still only 3 ethernet outputs

Airports have always been good, solid routers. But in this age of multiple devices and internet security systems and so forth, some of us need more than 3 ethernet ports. There is no reason a top-of-the line router can't have 5 ports. Apple has a tendency to push wireless for everything (MacBooks have lost most of their ports). I don't like it, and will have to look elsewhere. Will still give 4 stars for quality.

Worked well for 17 months, then died.

I liked the AirPort Extreme for 17 months. It covered most of our house with a single device and it was very reliable. Around 17 months it started to power down. I suspect an issue with the power supply, Apple has a long history of wonky power supply problems.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's eventually a recall program. I purchased it with an AMEX card, so I'll now see how good their extended warranty program is.

In the meanwhile, sadly, I've ordered ANOTHER Airport Extreme. (Sigh.) I really couldn't find a better option -- Eero is very expensive and unproven from a startup that may die. Google's hardware is outsourced and of uncertain quality.

The Airport Express has been very reliable. If you can make do with the Express I'd recommend it over the Extreme. If you need the coverage and buy the Extreme be sure to have an extended warranty credit cards (I think some countries have 2 years, that's enough) or pay extra for Apple Care.

    Great Range Extension

We moved to a larger house. Older 6 Gen Apple Extreme on first floor and iMac in opposite side of house in finished basement. First floor reception near old router was good at 160 Mbps download, but iMac in basement was only about 6 Mbps download. Thought we'd have to put in a WiFi extender to get signal on that side of house. Instead, got this new Airport Extreme. That made a big difference. Basement iMac went from 6 to 120 Mbps download with new router. That was the only change. No WiFi extender needed. Great range increase and coverage. Great Router!

    Unreliable after year and half

This was a nice product for a little over a year but now it constantly drops the connection. I have to unplug it and plug it back in daily. I thought I was having internet connection issues with my cable provider but turns out it is the airPort Extreme. Too bad, I like apple compatibility and simplicity but the reliability for this product is not there. I do not recommend this.

    AWESOME!!!!

This is an amazing, easy set up, stylish (no ugly antennas), most powerful router I have ever owned. Range is superb in my 2300 sq ft. Single story home!!
Wifi connection to all my devices are always at full strength. Down and uploading movies is super fast and smooth!

Bought a second Apple extreme for the garage. It's even easier set up because all you need is to plug the power and let the 2 pair up. NO 2nd Ethernet connection wire needed. It's that super easy! Not only do I have strong wifi connection in my house, I also have strong connection in my garage and back yard. Perfect for the 2 places I spend the most time in!

    Highly recommend.

    Fixes all wifi issues

I love this device. We have been Apple fans for so long, I can't believe we overlooked this product. We have had constant wifi issues with nearly 20 clients on our third party access point/router. I have been told by reputable authorities that too many clients can be difficult for a consumer wifi access point. Using the same router, turning off it's wifi, and using the Apple Extreme has solved all problems. I can now get great wifi in parts of the house which were previously dead. And speeds have improved everywhere else. This product is the most overlooked product on Apple's whole product line. IT IS AWESOME!

    worth the extra $

After some concern about the high price I bought this unit to replace my Linksys EA4500. The ea4500 was considered a great router but we never got good coverage and the speeds were not great. I must have spent 10 hours over the last while playing with settings and turing things on and off trying to get this thing to work as advertised. As usual, you get what you pay for! The Extreme was up and running in 5 minutes, coverage was spectacular and we were finally getting the speeds we pay for (Cogeco). Our family has 4 iphones, 3 macbooks and a few ipads. File sharing is now a (simple) reality with this great little device. Buy this if you want a router that works as advertised, especially if you are a mac household.

    Surprisingly weak Guest Network security

The Airport Extreme is a high-performance WiFi router, but it has a surprising weakness in the Guest Network: ZERO support for any form of client Wireless/AP isolation mode. For any public setting, like a library, coffee shop, retail store, this means that any wireless device that connects to the Guest Network can see all the other devices on the Guest Network, including the manufacturer of the device, address, and other features.

The lack of client Wireless/AP isolation mode is a surprising security weakness in an Apple product -- especially because many competitors support "Wireless Client Isolation" in product that cost less than half the price of the Airport Extreme.

I bought an Airport Extreme for use in a public art gallery, but it's being returned to Apple due to this surprising and disappointing security weakness.

    Incompatible with Surfboard Modems

After several hours and calls to Comcast I'm done with this router. Won't connect with modem and when it does its intermittent connection and won't work with other devices. I'm a big fan of Apple products but this one is a piece of junk.

    Blazing fast!!

I have been using Comcast as my ISP and was using router provided by it until now. However despite a good internet package I was never able to get stable and decent internet speeds. After fair amount of research I decided to invest in AirPort Extreme. There are many routers I considered before going for Extreme and the primary reasons were ease of setup, security, speed and of course the looks. I have to agree AirPort Extreme has all the qualities as mentioned on the company's website but the quality which stands out the most is the stable and blazing fast connection it provides. The only hiccup I had while setting it up was related to the Comcast router where I had to call the customer support to disable the wifi on the existing router, otherwise the setup was a breeze. Many would argue that there are better routers which provide more functions and customization but how many of us actually need those functions. I wanted a hassle free router and that's exactly what AirPort Extreme is all about.

Love the idea, but not the product

I bought this shortly after it was released because it uses ac wifi and I found earlier AirPort Extremes to be easy to set up and manage. In general it works really well for my wired devices. However, I typically lose wifi connectivity at least three times per week.

Though I have found a solution on the community boards that lets me reset the wifi without having to unplug the router, I still find it frustrating to lose wifi so frequently.

On a computer I go into AirPort Utility > Edit > Wireless > Wireless Options then I change the Wireless Channels. This solution was presented as a way to make sure you are not using the same wireless channels as any nearby wireless routers. I went through the more detailed process of assessing nearby wifi channels in use and was hopeful this would be a long-term solution. However, I still lose wifi several times each week so I don't bother checking the nearby router channels anymore and just assign new channels. I would really like to get a more permanent solution though.

Other than that (very frustrating) item, I really like this router. It is easy to set up and manage. I have it connected to a switch for my wired devices and they never have a connection issue.
