    Apple messed up

    • Written by from Long Beach

Should have the 4th fold in the cover to make it more stable. Sorry ipad air isn't that light that it doesn't need the 4th fold.

    Poor design and materials

    • Written by from San Diego

Not a very good design and the material(s) are flimsy. The design is not the best. My problems with the design are the fact the case does not lay flat when open and folded under the case causing a buckle at the first fold. Another design issue is the stand fold option continually fails. The reason I said poor material is because the inability to stay open (stand position) may be due to the material itself.

When you fold back the cover, it melts instead of holding firm and giving you a hand grip. It looks nice, it feels nice but it doesn't function AND it's really overpriced. Save your money, and your sanity, buy a 3rd party cover.

    Awesome Concept, Failed Execution

    • Written by from QUINCY

Smart Covers for the previous iPads had 4 panels where panel 1 and panel 4 would magnetically lock together, creating a solid triangular base for use as a stand, or even a left-hand "clutch" in portrait mode while surfing/lounging on the couch.

These new Smart Covers/Cases have 3 panels where the edge of panel 1 sits in a magnetic groove on edge of panel 3. Guess what? It doesn't work for beans. The iPad falls over in both positions, and it falls apart when you try to use it as a "clutch" as previously mentioned.

Poor Design and Far Too Expensive For What You Get

    • Written by from Franklin

I purchased this case with high expectations being that Apple designed it and their last model case was superb. The Leather Quality is nice and the magnet/sleep mode is a nice touch. It stands up well for landscape viewing at all angles.

The design is garbage. It is far too flimsy to offer any real protection for my new iPad Air. The tablet will fall out of the case if you aren't careful. It is not a tight fit by any standards. (The Kindle Covers are very tight. You almost need a shoe horn to get the tablet in or out which is excellent.)

When the case is closed it does not close all the way. The spine side leaves a gap of about an eighth of an inch. And the hinge is super flimsy and sticks out from the side the case about a quarter of an inch.

It looks thrown together and cheap. I have used cheaper cases on other tablets that perform better than this.

Once my other case comes in I will promptly send this one back. I could by two GOOD cased for $80. This one is terrible.

I am not used to sub-par products from Apple. But this case seems to be an afterthought and it should be redesigned before they keep selling them.

    Nice Looking but terrible function

    • Written by from Charlotte

The top cover doesn't lay flat but more importantly the triangle doesn't support the weight of the iPad. It seems as if the magnets are way to weak so any pressure on the iPad causes the triangle to come apart and the iPad to fall over. It almost seems as if Apple didn't test the functionality of the case before deciding to sell it. Don't buy this case!

Poor reading angle in both positions

    • Written by from Ottawa

In both orientations this case fails to provide good angles for reading / web browsing. It's either too steep in the upright position, or too shallow in the low typing position. Does apple even test using their cases? I don't understand how they could release something so unintuitive given their design ethic.

    Stay away

    • Written by from San Francisco

The case is worthless. Look at 3rd party covers. I say this as an Apple fan. It is a waste of money. I travel weekly and this case is not functional for airplanes or working remotely. The ipad is not stable.

    Great concept but....

    • Written by from Knoxville

I bought the black smart case looks and feels amazing, but for the $80 price tag this case lacks so much, a magnet in the back would be idea, and the case is utterly useless as a landscape stand the ipad falls over constantly. The front cover also isn't very secure apple needs to work out the bugs on this one

    Really Didn't Like This Case

    • Written by from Powell

I've loved the Smart Covers I've had for my other iPads and thought the case would be a great evolutionary step, so I ordered the red case. I wasn't terribly impressed. Here's why.

    1. I agree with the reviews that were disappointed with the leather quality. I had a red leather cover for my iPad 3 and lived it, but this case wasn't as attractive, and the color wasn't as vivid.

    2. I hated the texture. I use my iPad for reading, and I hated the feel of the case. In addition, I missed the smooth corners and edges of the iPad -- the case felt rough, like I'd need to use hand lotion after a long reading session.

    3. I hated the red border the case created -- it was a distraction when I was reading. Had I ordered the black case, this might not have been a problem, but since I hated the texture, why order a different case?

So I'm going back to a Smart Cover -- apparently less is better for me when it comes to my iPad -- and returning the case.

    Not a Good Choice

    • Written by from Old Greenwich

I just took delivery of my iPad so didn't have the benefit of the reviews but had I a choice, I would never have bought this smart case. I was looking for protection for both the front and back of the machine so it works for that. It is also light and has a nice look and feel but I agree with other reviewers that the fit and functionality aren't there. The stand is flimsy and the machine falls over and, even when you get it to work, if you bump it a little will also fall over. There is a very definite gap between the top flap and the iPad at the hinge that is noticable; the top doesn't fit flush with the machine. If in a bag, I feel any debris will easily get underneath and sit on the screen. If you have a choice, I'd consider something else.

    HORRIBLE case!!!

    • Written by from Prairie Village

I so much wanted to like this lightweight form fitting case which shows the top bezel. However, just like the flimsy cover version, this case is almost totally non functional. It won't stand up on my lap, it falls over, and the leather feels fake and cheap. Back to Piel Frama I go for real leather, real functional cases. I've had 6 of those and loved every one. Oh well. Apple rocks their core business, but cases aren't it.
