    Just ok

    • Written by from Socorro

    The good:
Very nice feel in the hands.
    Provides a good grip.
Colors match their iPhone leather counterparts.

    The bad:
The hinge sticks out too much, breaking the smooth lines of the device and creating an extraneous flap most other cases do not have.
The hinge prevents the top cover from laying fully flat on the iPad screen, something the smart cover does not suffer from.
The stand is way too flimsy.

    Yes, it's true; good, but...

    • Written by from New York

As has already been fairly stated, this is a decent case because it is light-weight, provides a good seal, and is usable as a stand. However, it has limitations as a stand because it is less than rock-steady and may not provide what you consider to be the best viewing angle. Finally, for $79, there has GOT to be a better choice out there. Unfortunately, I couldn't find one. So, I bought it and like, but recognize the fact that it is not necessarily the perfect case, and I have to imagine that it is not the best deal to be had.

    Great Case!!

    • Written by from Nolanville

This case is great for business. I process credit cards out in the field, and this provides good protection while allowing a Credit Card Swiper to fully plug in. A issue you would have with OuterBoxes or LifeProofs for example. Works well as a stand and grips the surface well so it does't slide around. The only negative thing about the case is that the iPad Air is beautiful it's like covering a diamond, but the case is better looking than another cases I have seen on the market, and slim. Holding my iPad Air in this case is like holding a naked iPad 4.

    IPad Air Case

    • Written by from Spartanburg

Very disappointing for the price. Feels llike plasticl, not a soft leather. Fits case however cover does not close tightly, and light shows, doesnt put it to sleep. Very annoying when using at night. Stand is floopy, doesnt hold it up and constantlly slips. Tab is very stiff and needs to be massaged and loosened before slipping into slot to hold pad up, or close. Very shoddy product for Apple to choose to use with this great new product! Very surprised at lack of quality. How about some nice new bright colors? This cover will have to do until something else comes out, but Apple dropped from the tree on this one.

Poor Design and Far Too Expensive For What You Get

    • Written by from Franklin

I purchased this case with high expectations being that Apple designed it and their last model case was superb. The Leather Quality is nice and the magnet/sleep mode is a nice touch. It stands up well for landscape viewing at all angles.

The design is garbage. It is far too flimsy to offer any real protection for my new iPad Air. The tablet will fall out of the case if you aren't careful. It is not a tight fit by any standards. (The Kindle Covers are very tight. You almost need a shoe horn to get the tablet in or out which is excellent.)

When the case is closed it does not close all the way. The spine side leaves a gap of about an eighth of an inch. And the hinge is super flimsy and sticks out from the side the case about a quarter of an inch.

It looks thrown together and cheap. I have used cheaper cases on other tablets that perform better than this.

Once my other case comes in I will promptly send this one back. I could by two GOOD cased for $80. This one is terrible.

I am not used to sub-par products from Apple. But this case seems to be an afterthought and it should be redesigned before they keep selling them.

    Very Happy

    • Written by from Brooklyn

After reading all the reviews here, I went into the Apple store fully intent on buying the Smart Cover. I asked the sales people to try out the smart case, and was astounded by the difference in look and feel between the case and cover. First off, I really love the look and feel of the brown leather case. As I haven't owned one before since the iPad 1G, this was a substantial upgrade. I am aware of what other people are saying about the new case feel vs the older leather cases, but I think this is a very personal and subjective quality which really requires the user to check it out themselves. I wanted to address two concerns: 1) in landscape mode the ipad is unstable. I think you will have to just go to the store and check it out, because I haven't had any problems with it falling. The viewing angle is much more upright, so it isn't as sturdy as the cover, but unless you are trying to knock it over I just didn't have this problem. 2) the cover doesn't sit flat. I have heard this time and time again, so when I went to the store I was expecting to be disappointed; only I wasn't. In fact, the cover sites nice and flush. But if you bend the cover enough, I have noticed that it begins to form a slight lift; but it goes away after keeping the cover unbent for a little while. Overall, I love it.

    Awesome product

Apple, you did a great job with this new design ! Can't understand some of the comments I read. Those either just don't like it or are interested in some other products. Sharp edges that were obvious in previous designed cases are gone. Thank you !
Five stars from this happy user!

Let me start off by saying, wow this case looks great! The brown leather gave my new iPad a timeless look, plus he microfiber on the inner cover of the case doubles as a cleaning cloth for your device. I've read the bad reviews and I have come to the conclusion that everyone is using it wrong. I witnessed this the first night I got mine. My girlfriend went to grab the iPad and place it in stand position and it would not stop toppling over. I then realized she had been folding the stand incorrectly, having the leather exposed instead of the correct way with the microfiber exposed.

    problem solved

    Decent case...

    • Written by from Santa Barbara

    - snug fit (it's quite difficult to take the iPad out of the case)
    - smooth leather

    - certain earphone jack plugs won't fit
    - durability concern (especially the "rim" part of the top cover which has been glued to the bottom cover)

To me, pressing on the volume control/lock buttons is alright, I don't have complaints. Standing either way (keyboard or facetime position) is also stable for me. I can press anywhere on my iPad without worrying about it falling.

If you're a perfectionist-type of a person, I recommend going to an apple store to grab one, because not all of the brand-new cases looked perfect (i.e. with wrinkles and/or discolorations).

The quality of the case to me is worth 4 stars (assuming it won't break easily), but I give it 3 for its high price. As pointed out in the cons section, I am the most afraid it might just tear off eventually, because it seems like glue was used to hang the top cover to the bottom cover... Time will tell.

    Great case!

    • Written by from Antwerpen

Brought a black smart case for my iPad air at the apple store. I like it a lot and I don't get what people are complaining about. It works great as a stand, protects the iPad... It just does what it needs to do. Maybe the complainers don't know how to use the stand/case? Or do they have the wrong case?

There is one thing though: $79 is pretty expensive for paper board and a little leather. But hey, if the product does what it does and there is nothing else that's better at it...

Not what I expect from Apple

    • Written by from Victoria

I bought a Red smartcase at the same time I ordered my iPad Air. Firstly it is more orange than red, not a huge problem but still. Secondly the case is almost impossible to remove which can be a good thing but not when the case will not allow my headphones to fit into the jack, the case must be partially removed. Also the front of the case will not lay flat against the iPad air so the lock feature does not work unless you push it down. However it still will not lay flat. Will be returning the case. Fairly poor design for $90 Cdn.

    Beware of Bad Reviews

    • Written by from Lake Orion

First off, this product is an amazing one at least. The leather is quality, the magnets are strong, the feel is amazing, and there is just enough wiggle room so it fits securely but not too tight.

BEWARE OF BAD REVIEWERS!!!! This product works EXACTLY how it is supposed to. Those giving it bad reviews don't like the product because it is not for them and they give it a bad review. The magnets hold up in both positions and anyone who says otherwise isn't using it right. It fits snug, good viewing angles, and 3 panel system makes for quicker easier set-up. The cover moves around a little, but how else are you supposed to get it off if there is no lip hanging off. We'll designed and thought out. Simply amazing.

    Nice Looking but terrible function

    • Written by from Charlotte

The top cover doesn't lay flat but more importantly the triangle doesn't support the weight of the iPad. It seems as if the magnets are way to weak so any pressure on the iPad causes the triangle to come apart and the iPad to fall over. It almost seems as if Apple didn't test the functionality of the case before deciding to sell it. Don't buy this case!

Two flaws, one of them major

    • Written by from Bellevue

Beautiful case, but two flaws that really make it useless.

First, the big flaw that makes the case useless. It won't stand by itself. Fold up the cover, stand the iPad Air up, and the "wedge" folds in on itself, causing the iPad to fall. If it does stand by itself, if you try to use the iPad at all, it falls. You must still hold the iPad.

Second, when closed, the cover part doesn't lay flat. The hinge edge stands about 1/8 inch above the screen, not completely sealing off the screen, and making it very easy to accidentally open the cover. Things may barely catch the edge, and the cover open up from the hinge side.

    Useless case. $80 gone.

Great Case/Cover...if you use it right

    • Written by from Austin

There are a few reviews here and elsewhere that say the iPad will fall over when using the stand in either the Keyboard Stand or the Movie Stand.
This is true only if you put the finished leather facing down (touching the table/desk), this is much more slick than the microfiber inner lining and it will fall very easy.
If you make the stand with the microfiber facing down (touching the table/desk) it will have a much tougher time falling if it ever does since its not as slick as the leather.
Try this way out and you will see that the stand is much more stable and you also will not scratch your nice leather.

I'm very satisfied with the Smart case now and its looks quite nice as well.

Covers and protects well. Does stand well.

    • Written by from CHICO

I'm less than impressed with this cover. It supplies ample protection and has a nice soft interior but the cover (near the hinge) doesn't close flat and the tri-fold style of screen cover doesn't hold the ipad as well. It will often collapse while I have it on my lap or even on a table. It seems the fourth fold that was removed on the smart cover redesign really added some stability. I also noticed that when holding the ipad with the cover in a triangle shape (portrait) it is a little too large to hold comfortably.

    Pro- Covers well. Soft interior.

Cons- Does not work as a stand. Holding ipad in portrait with smart cover in a triangle isn't comfortable.

I will continue to use this cover until I can find one better.

    Poor Design

    • Written by from Washington

The case feels solid and yet soft, just like the Smart Cases for previous generation iPads. While it may not provide much impact protection, I have no doubt that it will protect the iPad from scuffs and scratches.

I noticed immediately that the front cover doesn't lay flat across the screen of the iPad when closed. The fabric hinge is too stiff, and without the folding metal origami of the previous Smart Covers, which I am sure added weight, the cover doesn't seem to fit quite as it should.

This is odd considering Apple's typical attention to detail, but when the cover folds into a stand the situation gets worse. It appears that while the previous generation cases and covers used two sets of flat magnets to hold the the folding pieces together, the newest case only has a set of small magnets in the very tip of the cover.

The larger flat magnets in the previous cover held the whole surface of the cover against itself when you folded it back, increasing friction between them. This elegant design held a heavier iPad steady while the user pushed and swiped at the screen using the weight of the device as a further means to push the case onto itself and holding everything fast.

The new case only has weak magnets at the very tip of the cover flap, and if you don't align them very carefully, the iPad will fall flat. Also, the weight of the iPad no longer helps to anchor the cover because of the steep angle, so when you push or swipe at the screen it rocks backwards, sometimes collapsing the cover and causing the device to fall again.

When you consider the simple, brilliant design of the previous Smart Cover/ Case this newest case is designed in a shoddy manner inconsistent with its $90 price tag.

What we have here is a case where Apple is selling an accessory unworthy of their own product.

Excellent Case for the iPad Air

    • Written by from Murphysboro

While I think the iPad Air feels sturdy enough to withstand some abuse without a case, I carry mine in a bag to work, and take it out frequently to access PDF's, take photos, and send short emails. For my use the Smart Case is perfect.

The case was easy to put on and has a great appearance that will get better with use. The cover folds up nicely, accordion style, when I have it open. The additional weight it adds is barely noticeable to me. I don't use it as a stand too often, but when I do it works as advertised. Some users have complained about the small gap near the left edge of the case and the face of the iPad. It is noticeable, but hardly a problem for me. I expect that it will go away as the hinge gets more broken in.

My only small gripe would be that the cover could be slightly stiffer. Although the magnets are strong enough, it tends to slide around a bit while carrying the iPad. Otherwise, it is a great looking, high-quality case.

    Highly recommended.

Can't use headphones without removing case

    • Written by from Fort Wayne

The case is very sturdy and looks like it would provide great protection for the iPad. However the case is so thick that it's difficult to make the controls such as volume work. You have to push as hard as you can to make the buttons work. I have the Bose noise canceling headphones which are great but I have to remove the iPad from the case (not easy) in order to insert the headphone plug. Poor design,
