iWork ‘08 Frequently Asked Questions
for New and AppleWorks Users

Every new Mac computer includes a 30-day trial of iWork ‘08. iWork ‘08 includes Pages, a powerful word processor that’s perfect for everything from letters to newsletters; Numbers, an innovative new spreadsheet application to organize data, perform calculations, and manage lists; and Keynote, the next-generation presentation software for building cinema-quality presentations, photo slideshows, and animated storyboards. iWork ‘08 applications share the same toolbar, format bars, and many other interface elements, minimizing learning time. One of these shared elements is the Media Browser, which gives direct access to photos, movies, and audio libraries without the need to leave your document and dig through folders to locate these files. This means that including media in documents and presentations is easier than ever before.

The Basics

Will my AppleWorks documents open in iWork ‘08?
Yes, iWork ‘08 can open AppleWorks word-processing, spreadsheet, and presentation documents. It does not contain a database application and does not open database files.

Can I use AppleWorks on the new Mac with the Intel processor?
Yes, you can use AppleWorks on new Mac computers with Intel processors. However, because AppleWorks was not built for Intel processors, Apple recommends iWork ‘08. iWork ‘08 is a suite of native Universal applications and is able to take full advantage of the powerful Intel processors inside all new Mac computers.

I used templates in AppleWorks; does iWork ‘08 include templates?
Yes, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote come with dozens of exceptional, Apple-designed themes and templates for both formal and creative documents. Although AppleWorks templates are not included with iWork ‘08, documents created using templates in AppleWorks can be opened in iWork ‘08. You can also download or purchase more themes and templates from third-party vendors and from websites such as the iWork Community at www.iworkcommunity.com, and KeynotePro at www.keynotepro.com.

I really loved the user interface in AppleWorks, particularly the consistency across all kinds of documents. How is the iWork ‘08 interface different?
The iWork ‘08 interface is different from the AppleWorks interface, but new users should need little time to adjust to it and it is a quick learn. iWork ‘08 uses common interface elements such as the toolbar for main tasks and the contextual format bar to quickly format text, tables, charts, or images. It introduces the Inspector, a well-organized, context-sensitive palette to access multiple settings for layout elements, text, graphics, tables, charts, and links. Learn more about iWork ‘08 by visiting the website and viewing the quick tour and tutorial videos at www.apple.com/iwork.

Can I open Microsoft Office documents in iWork ‘08? What about saving my iWork ‘08 documents in Microsoft Office format?
Yes, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can open and save Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. If you use a PC at work , or if you exchange documents with PC users, sharing documents with iWork ‘08 is no problem. Microsoft Office does not share some of the layout and multimedia features found in iWork ‘08, so you may find dissimilarities between your original iWork ‘08 documents and exported Microsoft Office documents. iWork ‘08 can read the new Microsoft Office 2007 documents.

Word Processing

Can I use Pages as a standalone word processor as well as a page layout application?
Pages includes all of the tools you would expect from a word processor and also includes a powerful layout mode and media tools. This unique combination means Pages is perfect for creating any type of document and allows you to start working right away, rather than losing time learning two separate applications.

Is it easy to lay out my documents with Pages?
Absolutely. Build a layout from scratch or use an Apple-designed template as a starting point, modify it (such as to match your stationery colors), and start creating. Text and image placeholders make it easy for you to add your content by dragging and dropping, and then take advantage of the Pages layout guides and powerful text-wrapping ability. And because Pages connects to your iLife media libraries, you never have to leave your document to add the media you need.

Spreadsheet

Does iWork ‘08 include a spreadsheet?
iWork ‘08 includes Numbers, a spreadsheet with more than 150 functions to organize data, perform calculations, and manage lists. Numbers includes Intelligent Tables, customizable checkboxes and sliders, 2D and 3D charts, interactive print view, and customizable templates to get you started.

What other spreadsheet capabilities does iWork ‘08 include?
Included in Pages and Keynote is a spreadsheet-style table feature that allows you to perform calculations without the need to leave your document or slide. You can also copy and paste tables and charts between iWork ‘08 applications.

Presentation

What features does Keynote offer that AppleWorks and PowerPoint do not?
Every Keynote presentation begins with one of 35 exceptional, Apple-designed themes, with coordinated sets of textures, colors, and fonts. Keynote also offers HD themes, as well as cinema-quality 3D slide transitions, text builds, and graphics animations that you won’t find in any other presentation software. And, by using the Media Browser, you have direct access to your photo, movie, and audio libraries, without the need to leave your slides and search through folders.

Drawing and Painting

I loved the drawing and painting features in AppleWorks. Does iWork ‘08 provide similar functionality?
iWork ‘08 includes simple drawing features to handle a wide range of drawing needs. The Objects item on the toolbar provides tools for the quick creation of geometrical shapes and even the creation of custom shapes using the draw tool (Bezier). However, iWork ‘08 does not include painting tools such as the brush and eraser.

Does iWork ‘08 make it easy to import graphics files and clip art?
Yes, iWork ‘08 can import many formats such as JPEG, PNG, and TIFF. Graphics from drawing and painting documents from AppleWorks, Kid Pix, and other drawing applications can easily be saved in these formats. And because iWork ‘08 integrates with iLife, the Media Browser gives direct access to photos and other images in your iPhoto library. After you bring images into your document, you can take advantage of the iWork ‘08 layout guides, resizing options, and powerful text wrapping to easily fit and position your graphics.

Database

I want to do mail merges. Can I do this with iWork ‘08?
Absolutely. With Pages and Mac OS X Address Book, all you need to do is drag contacts from Address Book into your Pages document, and Pages does the rest.

What if I want a more advanced database?
We recommend FileMaker. From list management to complete applications FileMaker makes it easy to build your own database... or purchase off-the-shelf solutions from third-party vendors. See www.filemaker.com.
