About Mixing

When you mix a song, the goal is to balance all the parts and blend them into a cohesive whole. You can also color the sound of the song by adding effects to tracks or to the overall song, and change the volume over time with volume curves. A typical mix generally involves the following steps:

  1. Adjust the volume levels of individual tracks to balance different instruments with each other.
  2. Adjust the pan positions of individual tracks to place instruments in the stereo field.
  3. Add and adjust effects to color the sound of all or part of the song.
  4. Create volume changes over time using volume curves on individual tracks and the master track.
