Creating a New Project

Use iDVD project files to organize the movies, slideshows, and menus for your DVD. You can assemble your DVD over time and burn the disc when all the pieces are in place.

Steps

Create a project for your DVD

  1. Start iDVD and click the “Create a New Project button” or choose New from the File menu.
  2. In the Create Project window type a name for your iDVD project.
  3. iDVD automatically saves your DVD project in the Documents folder. Click the Where pop-up menu if you want to save your project to an alternate location.
  4. Choose Standard (4:3) or Widescreen (16:9) depending on the aspect ratio of the movies you want to include on your DVD. Widescreen fits today’s HD TVs best, while Standard fits traditional TVs better.
  5. Click Create.
  6. The main menu of your DVD appears. Double-click the title in the main menu and enter a title for the menu.
  7. Save your project by choosing Save from the File menu.

Tips

iDVD supports widescreen and high definition (HDV) movies created in iMovie HD

iDVD supports movies created in iMovie HD and some other video editing programs; movies formatted in either the standard (4:3) or widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio; and high definition (HDV) movies. Note: all formats are converted to a standard DVD format to play on virtually any DVD player. DVDs created in iDVD will maintain the widescreen or standard format of the original footage.

Using a camcorder that supports widescreen formats

DVDs of your favorite movies are often presented in a 16:9 widescreen format, which is the format the movie was probably presented in at the theater, on a screen that is much wider than it is tall. Today's latest camcorders can record in either standard (4:3) or widescreen (16:9) format. Some camcorders can also record in a higher quality, called HD, or high definition, format. HD takes advantage of both a higher resolution picture quality and the widescreen format.

Create an iDVD project in iMovie HD 6

You can quickly create a new iDVD project from iMovie HD 6, and automatically add the movie you’re working on to the project. In iMovie HD 6, select iDVD from the Share menu, then click the Share button. iDVD automatically opens, creates a new project, and adds your movie. iMovie HD 6 even allows you to add chapter markers to your movie before sharing it with iDVD.

Create an iDVD project on a computer that doesn’t have a SuperDrive

If your Mac doesn’t have a drive capable of burning a DVD (a SuperDrive or other compatible third-party drive) you can still use iDVD to design your DVD. When you’re ready to burn your disc, use Archive Project or “Save as Disc Image” to move your iDVD project to a computer that can burn DVDs.

Changing the name of your project

The name you give your iDVD project is the name that iDVD assigns to the DVD when you burn it. You’ll see this name appear in the Finder when you insert the disc in your Mac’s DVD drive, and it may also appear on the display of some DVD players. If you want the disc to have a different name than your project, choose Project Info from the Project menu and type a new name for your DVD.
