Use iDVD project files to organize the movies, slideshows, and menus for your DVD. You can assemble your DVD over time and burn the disc when all the pieces are in place.
iDVD supports movies created in iMovie HD and some other video editing programs; movies formatted in either the standard (4:3) or widescreen (16:9) aspect ratio; and high definition (HDV) movies. Note: all formats are converted to a standard DVD format to play on virtually any DVD player. DVDs created in iDVD will maintain the widescreen or standard format of the original footage.
DVDs of your favorite movies are often presented in a 16:9 widescreen format, which is the format the movie was probably presented in at the theater, on a screen that is much wider than it is tall. Today's latest camcorders can record in either standard (4:3) or widescreen (16:9) format. Some camcorders can also record in a higher quality, called HD, or high definition, format. HD takes advantage of both a higher resolution picture quality and the widescreen format.
You can quickly create a new iDVD project from iMovie HD 6, and automatically add the movie youre working on to the project. In iMovie HD 6, select iDVD from the Share menu, then click the Share button. iDVD automatically opens, creates a new project, and adds your movie. iMovie HD 6 even allows you to add chapter markers to your movie before sharing it with iDVD.
If your Mac doesnt have a drive capable of burning a DVD (a SuperDrive or other compatible third-party drive) you can still use iDVD to design your DVD. When youre ready to burn your disc, use Archive Project or “Save as Disc Image” to move your iDVD project to a computer that can burn DVDs.
The name you give your iDVD project is the name that iDVD assigns to the DVD when you burn it. Youll see this name appear in the Finder when you insert the disc in your Macs DVD drive, and it may also appear on the display of some DVD players. If you want the disc to have a different name than your project, choose Project Info from the Project menu and type a new name for your DVD.
