View Your Photos

One of the benefits of digital photos is how easy they are to view and manipulate. After you import your photos, you'll want to do a quick preview of your shots. With iPhoto, you can view your photos full-screen, and compare just the ones you want.

You can use the resize control to zoom in and out. Do some photos show up sideways? Rotate photos with a click of a button. And just delete any photos that you don't like.

Tips

Always open photos in full screen review

If you like the full screen editing mode, you can set iPhoto to always open photos this way when you double-click the one you want. From the iPhoto menu, select Preferences, and then select the General tab. Select "Using full screen" from the "Edit photo" options, and then close the preferences window.

Hide thumbnails and toolbar in full screen editing mode

While you're editing photos in full screen mode, you can set iPhoto to hide the thumbnails and toolbar at the top and bottom of the screen. This will allow you to display your photos on the entire area of your screen. Choose Hide Thumbnails or Hide Toolbar from the View menu while you're in full screen editing mode. Then, just move your cursor to the top or bottom of the screen to bring back the thumbnails or toolbar.

Change the default rotate direction

By default, the Rotate button in iPhoto, rotates your photos to the left. However, if you often take portrait-oriented pictures by holding your camera to the right, you might want to change the default direction of the Rotate button. From the iPhoto menu, select Preferences, and then select the General tab. Under the "Rotate" options, select the button indicating the direction rotating towards the right.

Creating a new film roll from a selection of photos

Sometimes a roll can be made up of photos from different days or events. To organize your photos into film rolls select the photos you want to add in the viewing window, and choose Create Film Roll in the File menu. Change the title of a roll by selecting it from your iPhoto library, and then click the Show information button. You can edit the title by clicking the existing title and typing in a new title.

Adjusting the Last Rolls and Last Months albums

The Last Rolls or Last Months icons create albums based on your most recent photos. To change how many rolls or months appear, choose Preferences from the iPhoto menu and click General at the top of the window. Type the number of months and rolls you want to appear in your Source list.

Accessing photos you’ve deleted

When you delete a photo from your iPhoto library by selecting it, and pressing the Delete key, it is automatically moved to the iPhoto trash. Click the Trash icon and notice that the photo viewing area changes to display only the photos you deleted. If you change your mind about a photo you have deleted, simply drag it from the trash back to the iPhoto Library. To permanently delete photos in the trash and free up space on your hard disk, go to the iPhoto menu, and then choose Empty Trash.

Change the order in which iPhoto displays your pictures

By default, iPhoto will sort your images so that the newest ones are located at the bottom of the window. To change this, go to the View menu, select Sort Photos, and then select Descending.

Get information about a photo, roll, album or your entire library

There may be a time when you want to get more information about your photos or groups of photos. Select a photo and click the Information button in the bottom left corner of the iPhoto window. A pane will appear in the bottom left corner that displays the picture's title, date, time, ranking, format, size and and comments you have entered.

Displaying more advanced information about your photos

If you would like to see more advanced information about your pictures, select the photo you want, go to the Photos menu and choose Get Info. You can also Control-click a photo and select Show Info. A window with 3 tabs will appear, Photo (with information about the photo), Exposure (information about the exposure of the photo), and Keywords (all the keywords associated with the photo).
