One-Click Editing Effects

With one-click editing options, you can give your photos more of an artistic feel, making them perfect for a certain style that you want to achieve in a photo book, calendar, or greeting card. Black and white photos have a timeless effect that seems to enhance the emotion of any photo. Sepia photos are a fun way to create an antique look. These are just two effects you can achieve by using the Effects panel in iPhoto.

Tips

Get great black-and-white photos

Photos with a lot of detail often look great in black-and-white. You can make your black-and-white photos look even more impressive by using the iPhoto Adjust tool and the contrast slider to add more contrast between the black-and-white parts of your photo. Some cameras can photograph in black and white—if you use this feature, try using side lighting to give your black-and-white photos more depth.

Duplicate a photo before making changes

When making changes to a photo, it’s a good idea to first duplicate the original, because the photo will be changed in your photo library and in any albums that contain the photo. Making a duplicate also means that you’ll have a "before" and "after" version of the photo in your photo library. Select a photo to duplicate. From the Photos menu, choose Duplicate, select the duplicate photo, and then type a new name for it in the Title field.

Using color photos in black-and-white documents

If you want to use your color photos in a newsletter, or other document that will be printed in black and white, it’s best to convert them to black-and-white before printing.

Where are the editing tools?

When you shrink the iPhoto window, you may find that you can’t see all of the editing tools. Click the right-pointing arrows near the bottom-right corner of the window. You’ll see the missing tools in a menu.
