Create a Smart Album

Albums in iPhoto make it easy to organize your photos, but Smart Albums make it even easier. With Smart Albums you don’t even have to add photos to your album, iPhoto does it for you once you’ve set up some criteria. For example, you can create an album that contains only your highest-rated soccer photos from this season.

To keep your collection up-to-date, iPhoto automatically updates your Smart Album when any photo that matches the album’s settings is added to, or removed from your library.

Tips

Option-click to create Smart Albums

You can use the Add (+) button to create a new Smart Album. Just press the Option key on your keyboard and when you see the Add (+) button change to the gear icon, click it to create a new Smart Album. Type a name for your album, add your criteria, and click OK.

Edit a Smart Album

To edit the settings for a Smart Album, select the album in the Source list, and then choose Edit Smart Album in the File menu.

Creating a Smart Album based on multiple criteria

While you are in the Smart Album sheet, you can add multiple search criteria to your Smart Album. This can come in handy if you are looking for pictures taken between specific times. As an example, you might want a Smart Album that contains pictures taken between 1999 and 2001.

Steps

Create a Smart Album

  1. Choose New Smart Album from the File menu.
  2. Type a name for your album in the "Smart Album name" field.
  3. To have iPhoto add photos that match specific criteria, make a selection from the pop-up menus.
  4. To add additional matching criteria, click the Add button.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Any photos that match the criteria you set, now appear in your Smart Album.
