Create a Slideshow

You can create a slideshow in iPhoto that plays right on your computer, and even set it to music.

iPhoto makes creating a slideshow easy. Simply select your favorite photos, choose music from your iTunes library, set your transitions, and go. iPhoto saves the slideshow in the Source list so you can play it or change it any time.

Tips

Add movement to your photos with the Ken Burns effect

With iPhoto you can bring your images to life using the Ken Burns effect, an effect that gives motion to your still images. You can set this up to work automatically on all of your images by clicking the checkbox next to the Automatic Ken Burns Effect in the slideshow settings. If you would like to have greater control over the Ken Burns effect, select the image you want, make sure the Ken Burns Effect checkbox in the main window is selected, and set the start position by clicking Start beneath the Ken Burns Effect checkbox and dragging the scale slider and positioning your image to where you want it to start out. Then set the end position by clicking End, and dragging the scale slider and positioning your image to where you want it to end up. Click the Preview button to see how your effect will look.

Use the keyboard to control your slideshow

While your slideshow is running you can use the keyboard to control the slideshow. The spacebar is used to start and stop the slideshow, the right arrow key is used to advance to the next image, and the left arrow will go back to the previous image.

Organize slideshows in folders

Folders can help you organize your slideshows and images. First, create a folder in the iPhoto Source list by going to File, then New Folder. Then create a slideshow from an Album, and move both the Album and slideshow into the folder you created. You will now have the photos and slideshow together.

Making a QuickTime movie from your slideshow

You can create a QuickTime movie of your slideshow if you want to share your slideshow and you don’t have a DVD burner. In iPhoto, select the slideshow you want to make a QuickTime movie of, then choose Export from the File menu. Choose the size you want, and then click Export. When you are done exporting your movie, a good way to send it to your friends is to burn it to a CD.

Burn a slideshow to DVD

When you’re finished creating your slideshow, you can burn it to DVD, complete with transitions and the music you chose. Select the slideshow you want, go to the Share menu, and select Send to iDVD.

Change the order of photos in your slideshow

You can easily change the order in which your photos are displayed during a slideshow. While in the slideshow window, you can drag the photos around in the shelf to create the order that you would like the slides to play.

Playing slideshows without music

If you would like to play your slideshow without music, you can easily do this in the music settings. While in the Slideshow view, click the Music button and un-check the "Play music during slideshow" checkbox. Now when you watch your slideshow, it will be without music.

Rotate, rate, and delete your photos

While a slideshow is playing, just move the cursor and you’ll see a toolbar that allows you to quickly rotate, rate, or delete the current photo. This makes slideshows a great way to review photos that you’ve just imported.
