iTunes Store with Your Kids

With the Music Store, kids who are over 13 can enjoy the experience of finding and purchasing music themselves. If they don’t have a credit card and you want to limit how much they spend on yours, you can use the Shopping Cart or set up allowance accounts. You can even turn on parental controls so they can’t preview or download songs with explicit lyrics or podcasts with mature content.

Tips

Cancelling an allowance

To cancel an allowance, go to the Music Store and after you’ve signed in to your account, and click the Account button. Click Manage Allowances. You can temporarily suspend an allowance, if you intend to reactivate it later, or click Remove to cancel the allowance.

Reviewing a shopping cart

To make sure that you can review a shopping cart before a purchase is made, don’t give out your password to anyone. That way, items in the shopping cart can’t be purchased until you’ve reviewed the cart.

Steps

Set up parental controls

  1. From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Click the Parental icon.
  3. Select the options you want.
  4. To prevent anyone from changing your settings, click the lock icon.
  5. Enter an account name and password of a user with administrator access to your computer.
  6. Click OK to close preferences.
