Play Your Music Wirelessly from Your Stereo

Did you know that you can use your local network to play songs from iTunes through your home stereo system without having to connect your computer to your stereo with wires?

With an AirPort Express base station your computer connects to your stereo and then iTunes wirelessly sends music to it. This lets you use the AirPort Express base station to play your iTunes library through your stereo, and place your computer anywhere that’s convenient.

Tips

Password protect your AirPort Express

If you want to control who can stream music to your stereo with your AirPort Express base station, you can add a password. In the Utilities folder double-click the AirPort Admin Utility icon, double-click your AirPort Express base station in the list of base stations, and then enter your base station password. In the window that appears, click the music button, enter a password in the fields provided, and then click update.

Disable volume control when streaming to remote speakers

If you want your stereo to have full control over the volume of your music, you can open iTunes Preferences, click the Audio icon, and then choose "Disable iTunes volume control for remote speakers."

Steps

Stream your iTunes music to your stereo

  1. Plug the AirPort Express base station into a power outlet and connect it to your stereo using either an optical digital or analog audio cable.
  2. On your Mac, run the AirPort setup assistant to set up the base station.
  3. Open iTunes, look at the bottom-left corner of the iTunes window, and then choose your stereo from the pop-up menu.
  4. Press the Play button in iTunes, and then sit back and enjoy your music.
