Sync Your Music to Your Mobile Phone

When you get your iTunes-enabled mobile phone, you’ll want to start listening to music right away. Transferring songs to your phone starts with your computer and iTunes. If you don’t have iTunes installed on your computer, use the CD that came with your phone to install it. Then, you can buy songs from the iTunes Music Store, or import CDs to your iTunes music library.

Once you have songs in your iTunes library, connect your phone to your computer, using the cable that came with your phone. If this is your first time connecting your phone, you will go through a Mobile Phone Setup Assistant and can decide whether you want it to be automatically filled with music ("Autofill"), or whether you’d like to manually drag and drop songs or playlists to your phone.

Tips

Convert higher bitrate songs to 128 kbps AAC

Songs on the iTunes Music Store are encoded at 128 kbps. If you have songs that are encoded at a higher bit rate, you’ll need to set your preferences to convert songs to 128 kbps in order to copy them to your phone. From iTunes Preferences, click the Phone tab, and then make sure "Convert higher bitrate songs to 128 kbps AAC" is selected.

Use your phone like a USB drive

In addition to copying songs to your phone, you can also use your phone like a USB drive to save files. Just go to iTunes Preferences, click the Phone tab, and then just slide the disk use slider towards "More Data," depending on how much disk space you want to use for your files.

Steps

Set up your computer to transfer music to your iTunes-enabled mobile phone

  1. Before you can transfer music to your phone, make sure that both iTunes is installed on your computer and that you have a flash memory card in your phone. If iTunes isn’t installed on your computer, use the CD that came with your phone to install it or download iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes. Also, be sure that your operating system is either Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later or Windows 2000 or XP.
  2. Open iTunes by clicking the iTunes icon.
  3. Connect your iTunes-enabled phone to your computer using the USB cable that came in box.
  4. Notice that your mobile phone appears in the Source list on the left side of the iTunes window.
  5. Select your Library from the Source list and drag and drop songs, albums, or playlists to your mobile phone icon in the Source list.
  6. Notice the "Do not disconnect" message in the iTunes window and on your mobile phone. Don’t disconnect your phone from your computer while you see this message—you might damage files on your phone or on your computer. If you see this message and think it’s a mistake, try ejecting the phone in iTunes or from the Finder.
  7. When iTunes has finished transferring music to your phone, the iTunes window, and the main menu on your phone will indicate that the update is complete.
  8. Click the eject button next to the phone in the Source List, disconnect your phone, and you’re ready to listen to music.
