Beyond the Basics

Steps

Insert blank CDs or DVDs as iTunes prompts you to.

(Note: Discs you create using the iTunes backup feature can be used only to restore; they can't be played in a CD or DVD player.)

Back up your purchases

  1. Choose File > "Back Up to Disc" and then select your options.
  2. Insert a blank disc (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, or DVD-RW).
  3. Click Back Up Now. iTunes burns the number of items that fit on one disc, and then asks you to insert subsequent discs to continue burning the remaining files. Don't eject a disc while a backup is in progress.
  4. To restore backed-up files, insert a backup disc, choose File > "Back Up to Disc," and then click Restore.

Connect your iPod to your computer and select "Transfer Purchases from iPod".

Copy your purchases to another computer

  1. Connect your iPod to your computer and open iTunes.
  2. Choose File > "Transfer Purchases from iPod".
  3. If you need to authorize your computer to play these purchases, select Store > "Authorize Computer".

Just select "Enable disk use" and click Apply to use your iPod as an external disk drive.

Use your iPod as a hard disk

  1. Connect your iPod to your computer and open iTunes.
  2. When the iPod icon appears in the iTunes window (below Devices), select it.
  3. If the Summary pane isn't showing, click the Summary tab.
  4. Click the “Enable disk use” checkbox, and then click Apply.
  5. Close iTunes and notice that your iPod appears on your Mac desktop or in the Windows Explorer on your PC.
  6. To eject the iPod on a Mac, select the iPod on the desktop and drag it to the Trash.

To eject the iPod on a PC, select the iPod in the Windows Explorer, right click on the iPod and then choose Eject from the pop-up menu that appears. Or at the bottom-right of the screen, click the ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ icon.

Tips

Deauthorize before moving to a new computer

If you get a new computer, and plan on getting rid of your old one, you're going to want to deauthorize your old computer since you can only authorize up to five computers. Just go to the Store menu and select Deauthorize Computer. If you forget to deauthorize a computer and you can no longer access it, you can deauthorize all of your authorized computers at once. Choose Store > View My Account. Be aware that you can only use this method once a year, so it should only be used as a last resort.
