Use the Click Wheel and Center button to navigate menus and play songs and videos.

Listening to music and watching videos

Use the Click Wheel and Center button to navigate through onscreen menus, play songs, change settings, and view information.
  1. Browse for the item you want to play by moving your thumb lightly around the Click Wheel to select a menu item, and pressing the Center button to choose the item.
  2. To go back to the previous menu, press Menu on the Click Wheel.
  3. When you find the song, movie, or show you want, press Play.
  4. Press the Next button to skip to the next item in your playlist (selected at random, if Shuffle Songs is enabled).
  5. Press the Previous button to go back to the beginning of the current song.
  6. Press the Previous button again to go back to the last item played.

You can skip chapters in podcasts and audiobooks with chapter markers.

Listening to audiobooks and podcasts

  1. Play audiobooks and podcasts just like you do songs, movies, and shows.
  2. Additionally, if the podcast or audiobook you're listening to has chapters, you can press the Next or Previous button to skip to the next chapter or the beginning of the current chapter in the podcast.
  3. When you stop listening to a podcast or audiobook and go back to it later, the podcast or audiobook will automatically begin playing where you left off.

Use the Hold switch to make sure you don't accidentally turn your iPod back on.

Suggestions to maximize playback time

  1. Even though the iPod turns off automatically after two minutes of inactivity, press and hold the Play button to power down as soon as you're done. Once it's off, switch the Hold switch to HOLD to make sure you don't accidentally turn it back on.
  2. Turn off the Backlight Timer by selecting Settings > Backlight Timer and choosing Off.
  3. Some iPods let you control the brightness. Reduce brightness by choosing Settings > Brightness, and then use the Click Wheel to move the slider to the left to dim the screen.
  4. Select an album or playlist instead of manually selecting each song individually.
  5. Avoid pressing Next or Previous to skip the track you're listening to.

Tips

Add frequently-used menu items to the main menu

You might want to add often-used items to the iPod main menu. For example, you can add a "Songs" item to the main menu, so you don't have to choose Music before you choose Songs. To add or remove items from the main menu, choose Settings > Main Menu. For each item you want to appear in the main menu, turn the Off option to On.

Use the Hold switch to disable controls

If you don't want to turn iPod on or activate controls accidentally, you can make them inactive using the Hold switch. Slide the Hold switch to HOLD (so you can see the orange bar).
