Using the iTunes Music Store

movie button practice button
With the iTunes Music Store, buying music is just a mouse-click away. To browse the iTunes Music Store, all you need is a Mac, iTunes, and an Internet connection.

But before you can purchase songs, you’ll need to set up an Apple account. With an Apple account, you enter all your personal and billing information once, and from then on you simply click one button to purchase a song or album. If you’ve ever purchased products online from Apple or have a .Mac subscription, you might already have an account. If not, you can set up your account right in iTunes.

Tips  Step by Step

Access the iTunes Music Store from an AOL account
Before you can buy music from the iTunes Music Store, you need to set up an Apple Account or have an AOL account. If you've already set up an Apple Account on the Apple Store website or in another application, you only need to sign in and verify your account information in iTunes to purchase music. If you want to buy music using only your AOL account, you don't need to set up an Apple Account, just verify your AOL account information when you sign in to the iTunes Music Store.

Prevent others from purchasing music with your account
You don’t want anyone purchasing music with your Apple account. If you use your Mac in a public area, such as a school lab or at work, you’ll want to log out of your account whenever you leave your computer. To do so, click your Apple ID in the Account section of the iTunes window. In the window that appears, click the Sign Out button. You’ll need to sign in again the next time you want to purchase music.

If you connect to the Internet with a modem
If you connect to the Internet with a 56K modem, the previews you listen to at the iTunes Music Store might sound jittery. To fix this, open iTunes Preferences and click Store. Then select the “Load complete preview before playing” checkbox. The next preview you play will sound crystal clear. The quality of your purchased music does not change—you’ll still get a great-sounding, reliable download even if your computer uses a 56K modem.

Purchase audio books with your Apple account
You can purchase audio books from right inside the music store. You’ll find everything from recent best sellers to all time classics. When you make a purchase, you can listen to your audio book on your computer or iPod as many times as you want. And with virtual bookmarks, you can always resume right where you left off.

Sign in to the iTunes Music Store by following these steps:

  1. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet.
  2. Select Music Store in the Source list.
  3. Click the Account button in the upper-right corner of the iTunes window.
  4. To sign up for an Apple account, click the Create Account button in the window that appears. Follow the onscreen instructions to create your account.
  5. To sign in using your account, type your Apple ID and password in the fields provided, and then click the Sign In button. You’ll notice your Apple ID appear in the Account section of iTunes. You’re now ready to start purchasing music.
