Creating Smart Playlists

Wouldn’t it be great if you could always get what you wanted, exactly when you wanted it? Smart playlists in iTunes might be a good start. iTunes can keep track of when you last played a song, what year the song was released, and even when you imported the song to your library, for example. When you create a smart playlist, iTunes accesses all this information, so you can create great mixes without a lot of work.

If you want to create a playlist with only your favorite songs, for example, you can create a smart playlist that checks to see how many times each song was played, and places the songs with the highest play count in the playlist. As you add more music to your library, the smart playlist is automatically updated.

Tips  Step by Step

Delete a smart playlist
To delete a smart playlist, select it in the Source list, and then press the Delete key. The playlist is deleted, but the songs remain in your music library.

Edit a smart playlists
At any time you can change a smart playlist that you’ve already created. Simply select the smart playlist in the Source list, and then open the File menu, and choose Edit Smart Playlist.

Create a smart playlist with music only from a particular decade by following these steps:

  1. From the File menu, choose New Smart Playlist.
  2. Select the “Match the following condition” option.
  3. From the Artist pop-up menu, choose Year; from the next pop-up menu, choose “is in the range”; and then type the time span of your search.
  4. To make sure your smart playlist is updated whenever you import music that meets your search criteria, select “Live updating.”
  5. Click OK to continue.
  6. Select your new smart playlist in the Source list, and assign it a descriptive name. Notice that the smart playlist icon is different from the icons representing other playlists.
