Mac OS X Support

1. Confirm that your hardware can run Mac OS X 10.3 Panther.

Mac OS X 10.3 requires a Macintosh with a PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor, built-in USB, at least 128MB of physical RAM and a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer. Mac OS X does not support processor upgrade cards.

2. Make sure your devices work with Panther.
Do you use a printer, scanner, digital camera or other device? If your devices work with Mac OS X 10.2, they should work just fine with Mac OS X 10.3. If you’re using Mac OS 9, check our device compatibility chart.

3. Verify that you have enough hard drive space.
The amount of free disk space required depends on your computer and the way you choose to install Mac OS X. You should have at least 2.0 GB of available space on your hard drive to install Panther. You’ll need a minimum of 3.5 GB of available disk space if you install Panther’s optional developer tools.

4. Plug in your portable computer.
If you’re installing Panther on an iBook or PowerBook, make sure it’s plugged in during installation.

5. Mac OS X updates: Have your username and password available.
The administrator’s username and password are required to install system updates. Make sure you remember your username and password before starting the installation.

Panther Installation Options

Upgrade: Panther’s Upgrade installation option will upgrade all necessary components of your old system software and leave your personal files and most preferences completely intact. This option is highly recommended for most users.

Archive and Install: Panther’s Archive and Install feature moves existing system files to a folder named Previous System and then installs Mac OS X again. You may also opt to preserve your user and network settings during the installation, which will automatically import existing users, Home directories, and network settings. more...

Panther Reinstallation
You can reinstall Mac OS X Panther using your installation or restore discs. However, if you have a Mac OS X Panther Upgrade CD, part of the Mac OS Up-to-Date program, you need to use a different procedure. Learn how to reinstall Mac OS X Panther from an Upgrade CD here.
