Customer-Installable Parts (CIP) Overview

Customer-Installable Parts (CIP) is a service option in which Apple provides service parts directly to customers for installation. CIP includes parts that a customer with a minimum level of technical ability should be able to install with either no tools or common tools, such as a screwdriver. Customers who feel that performing basic hardware repairs is within their capabilities are perfect candidates for CIP.

CIP compliments other service options offered by Apple by providing an additional service strategy for current products. Mail-in service, on-site service* and carry-in service are service strategies available for Apple products based upon qualifying product types.

The advantage of CIP is the reduced down time compared with other repair options. Ordering a service part via the Web Dispatch eliminates the extra down time associated with mailing a product back to Apple for service, carrying a product into an Apple Service Provider, or having an Apple-certified dispatch technician arrive on site* with the parts necessary to complete the repair.

Repairs under CIP assume the same status as other repairs offered under different service options. Repair transactions that are not covered by an Apple warranty or extended service agreement are billable. Additionally, CIP repairs may require payment authorization to ensure the return of the replaced part.

If the replaced part is not returned to Apple, a charge for the full replacement price of the replaced part will be incurred. Parts for which Apple requires a return include, but are not limited to, hard drives, RAM, and optical drives. Other parts, such as most mice and keyboards, are not required to be returned, and as long as the product is covered under warranty or an extended service agreement, payment information is not necessary to complete the transaction.

Payment authorization options are credit card, purchase order (with the account number of the entity on file at Apple), and in some cases, Apple Loan Accounts set up prior to the transaction.
