Petter Ringbom: The Beauty of Brown
”It’s so drab, boring and muddy, too earthy and dull”. Hell no, brown is beautiful! Brown is a warm and comforting colour. It stimulates your appetite, calms your nerves and increases your fertility (well, maybe not, but it’s possible). It’s such an unexplored territory in the world of colours that the one big corporation that’s using brown basically owns the colour. You all know who they are — they probably delivered something to your office today.
Last year we had so many clients using a blue and orange combination that we came up with a new term — blorange. I’d say, take another look at brown. Sure, it has some unfortunate connotations, but so does every colour. Green is Jealousy and hospital scrubs; cooler shades of blue have a tendency to cause feelings of Sadness; pink is, well, just think of Laa Laa, that poor teletubbie; and so on. There are stories and connotations for every colour. Give brown a break.
