Mixing With the Best of Them

Kipper in his studio

Grammy Award-winning record producer Kipper thinks of himself as a “midwife” to the artists he works with; and many of the essential tools that help him deliver their ideas into the world are provided by Apple.

We caught up with Kipper while he was in France working on Sting’s new album, Sacred Love — the aforementioned Grammy (for Best Pop Album) was awarded for another Sting album, Brand New Day — and he was full of praise for the Mac’s ability to aid the creative process.

“I’m a genuine lover of the Mac’s GUI”, he says. “The backbone of this new album was created on my dual 1.25GHz Power Mac G4, hooked up to 17-inch and 23-inch Apple displays. My sequencing program is Emagic’s Logic Platinum 6. It really is a dream set-up.

I like to think of myself as a kind of midwife to Sting's ideas. For me, technology is a means to a creative end. I want the hardware and software to be transparent, allowing a free flow of musical ideas. ”Once the basic ideas were sketched out on my system, I transferred everything to engineer Simon Osborne’s 64 I/O Pro Tools system, which utilises a dual 1GHz G4 with access to over 600GB of disk space. This system was then essentially used like a sophisticated tape machine for overdubbing Sting — drums, guitars, sitar and the like. I also had Donal Hodgson, a Pro Tools engineer, in a second studio working on some serious Pro Tools manipulations on a mirror system to Simon’s. The three of us were networked together via Gigabit Ethernet, so transferring files could not have been easier”.
