Preview: Images and PDF files in an instant.

Preview Icon

Preview makes it easy to view your images individually or in a full-screen slideshow, complete with transition effects and forward/back/pause controls at unprecedented speeds.

Format-friendly

Open virtually any set of images in Preview and they pop into view swiftly, with their true colours intact. Preview displays image formats of every description and resolution, including JPG, TIF, GIF, PNG, even layered Photoshop documents (PSDs) and data-heavy RAW files. Preview also supports newer file formats like JPEG2000, DNG (Adobe’s new digital negative archival format) and high dynamic range files like HDR and OpenEXR.

Tweak It Now

If you want to do some quick image correction, Preview calls upon Mac OS X’s Core Image technology to enable real-time tweaks to gamma, saturation, contrast, brightness, sharpness and more. With a click, you can transform colour to black-and-white, blue tone or sepia tone. Or quickly convert an image’s file format for emailing or Web posting.

Because Preview relies on ColorSync, Mac OS X’s system-wide colour management technology, you can also use it for colour soft proofing, enabling you and a remote client to make colour-correction decisions without resorting to printing hard copies and hiring expensive overnight delivery services.

Information, Please

When you need to delve into the details of a specific image, Preview shows you the metadata — focal length, exposure time, image resolution, colour profile and more — attached to any file. And lets you add any keywords you like, making it easy for Mac OS X’s Spotlight search to find your archived images.

“Preview in Mac OS X — with RAW Camera file and Adobe DNG support, Image Keywords and Image Correction via Core Image — takes the Mac from a nice-to-have-on-set to a can’t-live-without-it tool for any serious photographer.”

— Jon Moeller, co-founder, DigitalFusion

Tip

Preview can be used to create a virtual colour proof that you can send to your client to better meet the capabilities of her printer. Choose Tools > Match to Profile... and then choose the colour profile that describes her printer or the printer you’re trying to emulate. Preview will then adjust all of the colours in the image so they fall within the gamut of the chosen profile and include the appropriate ICC profile for a proper colour workflow.
