So far so good. No problem. Got funny little rubber feet you have to stick on yourself - that's quite weird. Apart from that all is gooood.

Easy setup, not sure about the design

I bought this as I had had a frustrating experience trying to format a Maxtor One-Touch to operate on my Mac. it was certainly easy to set up and operate. How I bought this as I had had a frustrating experience trying to format a Maxtor One-Touch to operate on my Mac. it was certainly easy to set up and operate. However, this Porsche design may be elegant, but the case is simply an aluminium oblong with sharp corners that are uncomfortable in the hand. Fortunately, i only need it as a desktop external drive, as I dislike the feel of it and wouldn't want to handle it for portable use. I would have preferred to do without the porsche design and save £20 or so. But it does work well and that's its saving grace.

It had been working fine, but then suddenly my laptop has stopped recognising it and I have been unable to get any of my data off it since. I have looked into this issue and found that it is a very common problem with these hard drives and no one seems to be offering any help or advice on how to sort this.

      New iMac new backup drive.

My older iMac (2007 – OSX Tiger and still going strong) has been retired to the bedroom. I have a LaCie backup drive also for the older iMac and it has worked perfectly for nearly eight years. It was used to transfer all my files to the new iMac, as the Migration Assistant is not compatible with OSX 10.4. The LaCie P9223 arrived the next day after ordering from the Apple Store and was easy to install, but I could not register it as requested by the LaCie Setup Assistant and was informed of a ‘server error – please try again later’. I then registered it separately online with the LaCie website. It is externally robust in its aluminium casing and sits well above the Apple SuperDrive on the foot of the iMac. When requested by the LaCie Setup Assistant, I opted for 100% partitioning for Mac. This is simply achieved by dragging the slider displayed in the Setup Assistant all the way to the left to illuminate the default partition and clicking OK. When the prompt to choose the Apple Time Machine for backup was displayed I selected OK and Time Machine started the first backup. I took 35 minutes for around 90 GB. Thereafter, Time Machine has been backing up so far without a problem. I have not impaled myself on the ‘sharp corners’ of the casing as mentioned by some reviewers, but as I don’t need mobility – using it exclusively for the iMac –this is not a problem, although I see what they mean. I have no horror stories to relate, and if the reliability of my previous LaCie drive is equaled by the P9223 I will have none.

      Excellent... when it works

I've had this product for some time now and for the most part it's great, it allows you to create a partition that you can use to connect to windows devices and I've had this product for some time now and for the most part it's great, it allows you to create a partition that you can use to connect to windows devices and it looks really good and professional. However, I have encountered quite a serious issue which is that even if you are extremely careful and safely remove the disk overtime, for some unknown reason (to me anyway) the disk will not mount. For those not in the know, that basically means, your computer will not recognise the disk and therefore not be able to read it. My macbook (and every other device in my house that I can connect it to (windows PCs, TVs, other MacBooks of varying ages) can read the share partition but not the main partition. I have tried using disk utility which says that I need to repair the device and then it says that it cannot be repaired and I must restore it. The first time this happened, I somehow managed to fix it through pure luck (I think I connected it into my TV) without restoring it but this time I am having no such luck. I am writing this review whilst I try and figure out how to fix the device as it has just happened for the second time and of course, I am reluctant to wipe the disk as I cannot retrieve any files from it currently.

Yes you can do so by partitioning the hard drive to setup a select amount for Time Machine and a sel Yes you can do so by partitioning the hard drive to setup a select amount for Time Machine and a select amount for personal use like photos, docs and whatever else you'd like to use it for. You can find youtube videos which will explain the process of how to partition the drive and set the drive up for Time Machine and a personal storage device. I myself recently purchased (2) 1TB hard drives and I use one for Time Machine and the other for personal use. Please note that time machine writes itself basically overtime you will hookup the external hard drive which does not take long and it will run in the backgroud without affecting your computer performance at all. But it is recommended that you have at least 3 to 4 times the amount of space on the hard drive or the partition section for Time Machine. This is basically so that you have plenty of history to come back to if need be. Time Machine will write over itself once it becomes full so if there is not much room than your backup may only be a couple months worth compared to having 6 months to a year or whatever. My internal hard drive or SSD is 256 and I bought a 1TB for just my 256. If you choose to use this 1TB Lacie hard drive for Time Machine and personal use than I would partition at least 750GB of the 1TB for Time Machine. Hope this helps
