Apple 85W MagSafe Power Adapter (for 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro)

  • Overview

The 85 Watt MagSafe Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector that ensures your power cable will disconnect if it experiences undue strain and helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector will light up; an amber light lets you know that your portable is charging, while a green light tells you that you have a full charge. An AC lead is provided with the adapter for maximum lead length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect travelling companion, the adapter has a clever design that allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on, or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro.

Not sure if this is the right power adapter for your Mac?

See this article for more details about choosing the right one.

Knowing which specific Mac model you have is important. If you are running OS X Lion (10.7) or later, go to the “” menu at the top left of your screen, choose “About this Mac” then click the “More Info...” button. Your Mac model and generation will be displayed.

If you are running an earlier version of OS X, you can enter your serial number here to find out which model you have.

I love my macs no doubt about it - but the magsafe adapters make me hate apple. The magsafe is such an expensive devise and at the same time the cord is so prone to braking off where it is connected to the charger. And then you cant just buy a new cord...you HAVE to buy a whole new charger...this is both very bad for the consumer and also for the environment. I really hope apple will soon realise that this way of milking costumers is not viable in the 21th century. So I beg you Apple: please fix the real problem and make a magsafe with a detachable cord.

This newer connector is marginally smaller and does not fit snugly into the socket on the computer. I bought two of these at the Apple Store, Regent Street which didn't work, and I was eventually advised to buy the older part number MA938B for my January 2008 MBP. Check before you buy!

Obviously there is a breathtakingly simple solution: to make the cable between the power supply and the mag connector modular, so it plugs into the power supply. Then you could just replace the inexpensive cable, and not the entire power supply. Or better still make the cable sheath durable so it doesn't need to be replaced in the first place!

Unfortunately for macbook customers, this is an expensive mandatory accessory. The magnetic end works well and is an innovative and functional design. However, I am now on my 3rd MagSafe adapter for the same Macbook (!) because the thin cable has frayed like a lightening conductor and snapped at the point where it joins the brick ...you don't need a physics degree to understand why this happens. Hang on a minute, maybe I'm just using it incorrectly, maybe if I just kept my macbook on a desk and didn't move round different rooms from time to time I'd never have the problem. Please close this Service Request as 'verified resolution - user error'. Many thanks.

Makes me feel like an idiot for buying Apple

Sure they're pricey but they rock if you're a developer. Power, battery life, unix OS, nice interface, lots of apps, ... They're worth the money. These power leads on the other hand are the worst and the most expensive I have seen. The outer insulating material shreds. First time I thought I was doing it wrong. Second lead I was careful so surprised when it happened again. Third time I had treated it like a fragile bird I cared deeply about. Lasted less than a year. And now.. Now I feel like it some kind of idiot tax. It makes me want to swear. I would give it minus stars if I could. No other power lead has done this. Unless they change their material dramatically this WILL happen to the next one I but. And yes, finally it's making me think about getting a different make of machine altogether next time. I've got this off my chest and yet I still want to swear. Fix this Apple, or you will lose customers. For the safe of some plastic tubing FFS. Come on.
