  • Overview

The 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adapter features a magnetic DC connector so if someone trips over it, the lead disconnects harmlessly and your MacBook Pro stays put safely. It also helps prevent fraying or weakening of the cables over time. In addition, the magnetic DC helps guide the plug into the system for a quick and secure connection.

When the connection is secure, an LED located at the head of the DC connector lights up; an amber light lets you know that your notebook is charging, while a green light tells you that you have full charge. An AC lead is provided with the adapter for maximum lead length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives you an even easier and more compact way to travel.

Designed to be the perfect travelling companion, the adapter has a clever design that allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage.

This power adapter recharges the lithium polymer battery while the system is off, on or in sleep mode. It also powers the system if you choose to operate without a battery.

Compatible with MacBook Pro with Retina display.

Not sure if this is the right power adapter for your Mac?

See this article for more details about choosing the right one.

Knowing which specific Mac model you have is important. If you are running OS X Lion (10.7) or later, go to the “” menu at the top left of your screen, choose “About this Mac” then click the “More Info...” button. Your Mac model and generation will be displayed.

If you are running an earlier version of OS X, you can enter your serial number here to find out which model you have.

I am not a heavy user but the charger had now 'frayed' at the mag 2 connector showing the metal grading around the cable itself. It is a poorly designed and poorly constructed piece of equipment which lets down the whole product. I just wonder what Apple were thinking of.......

Today the cable coming out of the main unit melted exposing the internal wires. In the process it melted a hole in the carpet it was sitting on. Overheating seems to be a recurrent problem with this design. Tomorrow I will see what the Mac Store has to say about this. I assume that they will replace the product for free.

It's a charger, it works, had mine 2 years with no issues

If you need a charger then buy this, simple as that. Mine has lasted two years, and so has my father's and colleague's. Not sure what people do to their chargers but mine is fine. Ordering a second one now because I'm tired of lugging it around.

      Harsh handlers?

After all, the millions of people that have had no problems with their adapter are unlikely to leave a review here just to say "all is well". I have been using various MacBook models with MagSafe adapters since they came out. I have *never* had an adapter fail on me in anyway whatsoever. I have not had a concern about overheating nor have I ever had any connectors fail or cable insulation wear and expose bare wire. I can only put this down to a couple of things: 1) Do NOT remove the connector from the computer by pulling (even gently) on the cable itself. Remove it by gripping the metal or plastic connector and pulling up or down 2) Do leave a bit of slack before you wrap the cable around the charger's built-in cable management prongs. Watch some youtube videos for tips on this. This will prevent the cable fraying where it comes out of the charger unit My sister has gone through three adapters in perhaps 3-5 years. They have all failed with worn insulation, exposed cable and eventual shorting out. This can't be a coincidence. She swears that she doesn't abuse them, but I just don't buy it. Again, I've never had an Apple cable in the last 10 years fail on me. My original USB -> Dock connector cable that came with my iPad 2 is only now just beginning to show signs of wear around the Dock connector. That's not bad for almost six years of regular use. I expect a MagSafe adapter to last me the whole lifetime of any MacBook I buy. I haven't been proven wrong yet.
