Be aware that none of these applications will work when connected via HDMI to a display. You will receive a notification that states the app does not support. Possibly ignorance on my part, but to me, this was a big plus point of buying the adapter in the first place. I contacted 4od and received the below response when I asked why there was no support: "Unfortunately the reason Airplay no longer works is that we don't have the rights to broadcast all our shows using Airplay, so this feature is not enabled." Hope this helps.

It does work with SOME on-demand services

I pondered for a while whether to get this cable or not, as I really wasn't clear which on-demand services it was compatible with. After visiting a store to ask I pondered for a while whether to get this cable or not, as I really wasn't clear which on-demand services it was compatible with. After visiting a store to ask the staff, it seems there was a little confusion at their end too, which probably isn't Apple's fault per se. Basically, this cable will only mirror the full audio/video of on-demand apps if the app-maker/content-creator allows it. I've tried it with a few different services and, contrary to what one other commenter here says, it does actually work with iPlayer. Well, I watched a range of TV shows from my iPad Mini on the big screen, no issues, but that's not to say there won't be some shows that won't work if there is rights-related issues. I tried it with LoveFilm, only the audio worked. With 4oD, nothing worked at all. Luckily, the main player I wanted this cable fore - Eurosport Player - does work with it. So yeah, if you're looking to stream content from on-demand players to your TV, just bear in mind some work, some don't. I'm giving it 4 stars because it's mostly fine for my needs, and it does actually work for content stored on the device itself, as well as YouTube and the likes. I just wish Apple would put a warning somewhere in the product description explaining the issue with on-demand - I bet a lot of folk buy this cable only to be disappointed.

A lightning port on the adaptor allows you to charge/power your device while you see it on your big screen. Maybe surfing which beats any pc for size! Very handy adaptor in my opinion. Of course, you could mirror your device with an Apple TV device but this cable adaptor saves connecting to the network and of course, can easily be used on a friend's TV (simply connect to an hdmi socket, need an hdmi cable of course) to show pictures etc.

Why did Apple not mould the Lightning connector into the other end of the block so as to give a strong and rigid design. Most HDMI cables are heavy so inevitably the short stiff piece of cable that connects to the Lightning plug will be under bending loads however careful you are, and hence they fail early. Mine has lasted about 6 months and now cuts out if you so much as touch it - as have many other peoples if you read all the negative reviews. It actually worked very well before it started to break which is all the more frustrating. Shame on you Apple, selling expensive, poorly designed and badly made rubbish as accessories for your otherwise excellent kit. And there is no alternative source available as you have a monopoly. You should and can be so much better than this.

Apple need to just swallow their pride and give the consumer what they want, FLEXIBILITY. A smart company would allow more experienced 3rd party cable companies to produce this kind of product rather than keeping exclusivity just to charge EXTORTIONATE prices for something that costs 20p to make, and doesn't even work. Poor form apple. poor form.

Both adapters gave horrible results on big screens. They showed compression artefacts and a generally nasty image. There is absolutely no way the output is 1080! I don't quite know how Apple has managed it, but it takes many ££££ and turns a lovely crisp retina image into something truly ugly. I switched one over to my old iPad 2 with a 30 pin adapter and got a better image!
